Thank you SO much for this video. This is exactly what I am afraid about. I just started harness the past weekend and being an older beginner I have a heightened sense of fear about being caught under the sail. I did eventually practice in the shallow water, being in the fallen and prone position, and that helped build my confidence that even if your harness is still connected you can still get your head past the mast for air in most situations. If your harness line length is positioned correctly. But this is definitely a topic to pay attention to and I kept searching youtube for support.
@@lazzyblock7196 Usually, if you adjust your footstraps right and not too small, you will always get out when you fall and focus on holding onto the boom in case you´re still hooked in. Footstrap size etc video coming very soon as well !
Guido
Happened to me too... Or this scenario: I stay hooked, hands on the boom, but my feet go past over me and then my whole body follows, my head kissing the sail... no good for the neck!
Thank you for the video, I am battling with those fears right now. Will keeping both hands on the mast while catapulting lesser the chance of smashing the nose of the board with the mast? I have busted 2 board noses with catapulting, would want to avoid that. Any tips for avoiding that?
Well, if you hook in during your frontloop (yes, it is a quite common), means that you are actually jumping your body a bit too much forward and not using the rigg for your forward rotations. By bringing the sail more forward and across to the windward side, you create more fowrard draft in the sail, more "pull" and more rotation created by the wind / rigg. The harness lines will be really far away from your harness and you would not be able to hook in plus you would have a cleaner rotation. Hope that could help. Enjoy the practice !
great video! But how do I avoid destroying the sail with my harness in a catapult? You can even see in the video that the hips are thrusting forward in even a light wind fall.
As long as you keep holding onto your boom, the risk of crashing into the sail with your harness is very small. What helps, is to actually close the sail, little backhandpull once you feel you can´t avoid catapulting. This helps to rotate flatter and land next to your sail and not onto it
@@windsurflabor4767 I destroyed my first sail recently, but it was in a storm and I was hooked in the harness after a tack without knowing it, that's why I ask. I'm a bit scared now :D Thanks for the advice, but doesn't that increase the risk of falling onto the mast with the side of your body? That happened to me a couple of times - sail went to the upwind side and I hit the mast with my thorax.
You can pull with your back hand during catapulting to initiate a spin and land below the rig. Not the most pleasant way to fall, but is there a pleasant catapult? By pulling with you back hand you basically initiate a spin loop. I learned this from one of the harness tutorials, but I can't find the video anymore.
@@ahonelev1253 there isn’t really. One time I fumbled with my harness for like 20sec and couldn’t get it off. So I just tried to get my head out from underneath the sail and just managed to pop it out the side of it. But I honestly thought I was going to drown lmao
@@ferdi6594i had the same couldnt remove the harness from the hook i was stuck for 20 sec and succsed to pull my head out somehow. Maybe if we catch the mast it will solve this problem ? I am not sure but need to over come this fear... I am going to take some lessons to get more confident.
Awesome! This topic is not discussed enough. It’s very important to learn how to crash. Thanks
Hi Tom, thanks for this. I am just getting into a harness. The tip on grabbing the mast & push the sail is great.

You are welcome, that´s is the reason why we are doing this
I cant thank you enough you just boosted up my confidence
Thank you ! A pleasure, that´s why we are doing this !! Enjoy Windsurfing
Hi i just went windsurfing and already improved alot with windsurfing by using the harness

nice tip for my boys! subscribed
Thank you, well explained good advices!
Brilliant it is great to know how to fal,l takes the fear away, thankyou
Excelente gracias ¡
Very useful! Thanks!
Nice!!
Falling towards the windward side can be dangerous, though, if you do a push-up. I dislocated my shoulder once while falling in very slowly.

What about front loop? How to avoid to get stuck in harness lines (even if you hooked out before)? Common? Bestpractice?

fear of drowning
The worst thing is being trapped under your sail when you’re still hooked in…
what is the better option when you fall backwards?
