August The difference between a Monday and the next Thursday is 3 days. For the said dates, it can be either 31 days or 38 days. With 31 days difference, you can't get a sum of 38, so the difference has to be 38. It took me about 2 minutes to work out, but much longer to write.
Unclear wording of the assignment. The NEXT month means the following month and not the month after the following month. But I understand english is not your primary language so maybe the problem got lost in the translation?
Sorry sir I didn't understand, if July ends on 31st as Monday then August start from Tuesday and 1st Thursday comes on 3rd then 31+3 can't be 38. Can anyone clarify my doubt?
Yep, the wording is unclear, especially with the image of a calendar. 'The next month' implies consecutive and that we are supposed to be working out the second of the two months. It's actually talking about 3 months though - the previous month, the current month, and the future month. As soon as we look at consecutive months it is obviously impossible and the image shows only 2 calendar months so is confusing.
If it's any consolation, I find the hardest part of maths is trying to work out what they are even asking. The maths itself is okay, it's the way problems are presented that I find most confusing. 😄
this happened in 2017 and this will happen in 2023, 2028 and once every 12 years approximately. Same as Sewing Machine, I guessed it couldn't happen around February, it had to be around July or August. Then I unpaused and listened to the so satisfying explanation.

Month=['feb', 'apr', 'jun','aug', 'sep','nov'] The answer from my side is, if any month from Month will ended on Thursday then we get next month's first Thursday on 7th- date, it means it depends upon the ending of current month and it can be any date respectively. Conclusion: If august doesn't end on Thursday, then it is not the answer. My question is : why should the aug ended on Thursday in ur explanation? Hope u will read and reply me, thank u.
Boss i got ur explanation .....but see the sum is 38 this will satisfy only 31+7 so obviously 31st last month must end at monday .if it is end on monday , obviously present month (i.e aug in our case ) will end on thursday. Simple ..hope u got it.....this puzzle is amazing....
@@haebelebby9441 well since there is 31 days in January and February would be in leap year, it would be 5+29+4 which is 38. Maybe you didn't understand the question
I was surprised that ChatGPT was able to come up with the correct answer after a couple of corrections: User The result of adding the date of the last Monday of last month and the date of the first Thursday of next month is 38. If both dates are of the same year, what is the current month? ChatGPT Mar 23 Version Let's start by finding the dates mentioned in the problem. The last Monday of last month was the last day of the month, which we can call "M". The first Thursday of next month will be the 3rd day of the month, which we can call "T". Now, we can use this information to write an equation: M + T = 38 Since the dates are of the same year, we know that the last Monday of last month and the first Thursday of next month are no more than a month apart. This means that either M is in January and T is in February, or M is in November and T is in December. (If M is in December, then T would be in January of the following year, which is not allowed.) Let's consider each possibility: If M is in January and T is in February, then M is the 31st and T is the 3rd. So, M + T = 31 + 3 = 34, which is not 38. If M is in November and T is in December, then M is the 30th and T is the 1st. So, M + T = 30 + 1 = 31, which is not 38. Therefore, there is no solution to the equation M + T = 38 for dates in the same year. This means that the problem is not well-defined, and we cannot determine the current month. User It is not true that "The last Monday of last month was the last day of the month." ChatGPT You are correct, I apologize for the mistake in my previous response. The last Monday of last month is not necessarily the last day of the month. To approach the problem correctly, let's first determine the current month. We know that the last Monday of last month and the first Thursday of next month are no more than a month apart, so they must be in consecutive months. Assuming that the current month is not December, the last Monday of last month could fall on any date between the 22nd and the 28th. Let's call this date "M". Similarly, the first Thursday of next month could fall on any date between the 1st and the 7th. Let's call this date "T". If we add M and T, we get a number between 23 and 35. Therefore, it is impossible for the sum of M and T to be 38, as stated in the problem. Therefore, there is no solution to this problem, and we cannot determine the current month. User It is not true that "the last Monday of last month and the first Thursday of next month are no more than a month apart." ChatGPT You are correct, I apologize for my mistake in my previous responses. I misunderstood the problem statement. If the last Monday of last month and the first Thursday of next month are no more than a month apart, they can only be in two specific months: February and March of a non-leap year or August and September of any year. Let's consider each case: If the dates are in February and March, then the last Monday of last month (February) is either February 22 or February 29 (if it's a leap year), and the first Thursday of next month (March) is March 3. If the last Monday of February is February 22, then M + T = 22 + 3 = 25, which is not equal to 38. If the last Monday of February is February 29 (in a leap year), then M + T = 29 + 3 = 32, which is also not equal to 38. If the dates are in August and September, then the last Monday of last month (August) is either August 22, August 29, or August 31, and the first Thursday of next month (September) is September 7. If the last Monday of August is August 22, then M + T = 22 + 7 = 29, which is not equal to 38. If the last Monday of August is August 29, then M + T = 29 + 7 = 36, which is not equal to 38. If the last Monday of August is August 31, then M + T = 31 + 7 = 38, which satisfies the condition given in the problem. Therefore, if the sum of the dates is 38, the last Monday of last month is August 31, and the first Thursday of next month is in September. This means that the current month is August.

The example solution you give has 39 days. 1 day (the 31st of July) plus 7 days (1st through 7th of September) plus the 31 days in August = 39 days.
