- In this video I discuss Alexander Volkanovski's recent comments about not wanting to take time off after getting knocked out by Islam Makhachev at UFC 294. I think that he should simply extend his training camp for Ilia Topuria for a few months & fight at UFC 300. He should use the next few months to skill build. What Do you guys think? This is where his management, teammates and family need to step in. Have Volk fight at UFC 300. Let him improve his defense and submission skills before hard sparring. He can treat this like a 5 month training camp that slowly ramps up in intensity.

Volk is feeling that pressure of being older and having to chase greatness after getting a late start. A lot of other all-time great fighters don’t have to feel that, and I’m sure it’s extremely hard to fathom after having such a long career in sports prior to training MMA. That being said, ensuring a couple more wins for legacy is more important than risking a couple losses. I think even in January Volk will destroy Topuria, but Topuria has a lot more than just a puncher’s chance. I hope he takes the time off.

January vs Ilia isn’t happening. I’m surprised his medical suspension hasn’t been officially announced yet, but I have heard rumors that he got 45 days. That brings us to early December. How are they gonna book a guy in December fresh off a medical suspension for a fight in January? Fights are typically announced a few months in advance. The earliest he fights again is March-April.

he should totally take off until january. like, naturally maintenance training and skill building, but not "in camp" , then return to camp in jan. to fight in UFC 300. I think that's a great idea. And look, I understand he has a bit of a problem when he is out of camp, but he needs to find a way to deal with that OUTSIDE of fighting or training. That is 100% obviously the issue. Tackle that problem directly, rather than avoiding by just taking more fights - maybe get a therapist or sports-psychologist to help work on yourself. He absolutely needs a new hobby. A lack of fights is not the problem - the "out of camp" problem needs to be addressed itself and fixed or it's going to plague him eventually no mater what.

There is a very easy argument for Volk headlining 300. Jones is out, the interim belt for heavyweight will be too soon. The current champs at Flyweight, Bantamweight and Middlweight couldn’t headline such a large event. Depending on how Leon vs Colby and Alex vs Jericho goes, they may not be ready to fight again. The only possible fights I could see is Conor vs Chandler and Islam vs Charles 2. You can argue 300 doesn’t even need McGreger to sell it so Islam v Charles could sell it. Then again Islam rarely fights so I think there’s a greater chance Volk vs Ilia could def headline that

Volk learning submissions will not guarantee results. His striking is elite, he is already on track with that, both defensively and other. He just needs to stop fighting Islam and moving weight-classes. He is going to remind the world of his greatness in his next fight.
