Oh wooow, James Newton Howard's piano melodie at around 25:28 is totally a sibling of his Main Theme to Lady in the Water! Not identical twins, but the family shines through brightly! Also: would LOVE to see the trio exploring "why this music stuck".

25:00 I might be one of the few who absolutely adores The Village. It came out in a very formative period for me and the naivete around love was still very fresh. I saw it blind, never had any expectations of it and the TWEEEEEEST sort of became secondary to the romantic plot in it. The score has permanently remained on my playlist ever since.

  • @LemonJelly360

I’ve spent an evening building a spotify playlist that aims to evoke the emotional, yet epic, feel to scores. The first How To Train Your Dragon is simply a masterpiece and hammers you right out of the blocks with “This is Berk”. Another of my absolute favourite is the Super 8 Suite by Michael Giacchino - it’s utterly sublime.

I bought the original score album for Face/Off on release and have listened to it regularly ever since. That was John Powell's first feature film credit, and it made me a fan from day 1. I used 2 tracks from it to score student films I made at NYU and use the airport sequence from the beginning of the film to demonstrate the idea of hit points in the Film Music class I teach. I also use the final cue from his score for United 93 to demonstrate how it goes from subtle underscore to carrying the emotion of the climactic moment. It's so satisfying to see him embraced by the film composer community, never mind his professional success. Thanks for highlighting him.

There’s a lot of scores that should have been NOMINATED but somehow didn’t hahaha. Like you I thought Powell’s Don’t Worry Darling was genius! Personally my favorite score of 2022 was Rob Simonsen’s score to The Whale. Hell…reminder that James Horner’s Land Before Time WAS NOT NOMINATED😂😂
It’s one of things that prove that accolades don’t represent the entirety of the bowl of scores or movies released in a year. I’m always happy for any colleagues of mine that get nominated because that’s truly awesome!! But that shouldn’t be end all be all!! Focus on you and what you can do! Love this video…also damn…didn’t realize what beat Milan 😂

What a great episode! Lots of good discussion here. The part where you were talking about Hanz Zimmer reminds me of the documentary "The Sound of 007" that came out last year. At one point Billie Eilish was talking about working with Hanz and describes him as a complete "dorkball," in an endearing way. Because despite how renowned he is and how many intense scores he's made, he's just a man who loves creating music. And is really freaking good at it lol. Thanks for sharing as always, and good luck at the Grammys!

finally got around to watching this while crocheting a fish (almost finished!) and I must say it's so refreshing to have a podcast where people get to gush about their favorite things. It's so easy to fall down a rabbit hole of bad faith criticism and disparaging reviews that I forgot how fun it is to just have people who are passionate about their industry appreciate the work of others.
also, about how horror scores are sometimes hard to listen to outside of the context they exist in - while I find that the OST to Vampyr isn't great for studying or working out, I have found it very helpful to set the mood for writing horror stories!

I love the shoutout to John Powell (BTW, Troy should NEVER watch the 3rd film, it nearly broke and I'm nowhere near having the reaction he had to the first one). I agree with How to Train your Dragon being like him at the top of his game, but I think an underrated score of his is the third X-Men. I think it really checks some of the same boxes his Dragon scores do... just attached to a, well, not quite well received movie.

But then that upset was eventually brought up in relation to Mulan which I forgot was nominated too! I feel like you don't see multiple animated films get nominated for best score in the same year very often.

Look, uh... in my humble opinion the Mulan score does have some weird and slightly off moments as well. Especially the hero montage part in the cue "Short Hair" has this 80's vibe percussion layer in it that really feels like Goldsmith trying to sound... "cool" and bringing some Rocky atmosphere into the score that doesn't really belong. ruclips.net/video/MilR3Z1sASY/видео.html I've never understood why this went into the final film.

It's not that SIL is a bad score by any means ... it's simply that in an A/B comparison I at least subjectively find Mulan vastly more engaging, interesting, etc. But it's not like Warbeck didn't do precisely what the job demanded! I always respect and admire that

It seems to me that the AMPAS doesn't really evaluate the categories it selects for closely.
Avatar won best cinematography for 2009, and I agree, but who got the award? Mauro Fiore, who ONLY worked on the live action portions of Avatar, I doubt the Academy knew or cared about this fact.
Avatar was also a tremendous achievement in film editing and pioneered performance editing for performance capture but lost in that category to Hurt Locker.
And so Anne Dudly won best original comedy score for the Full Monty (a movie I have not seen) simply, I think, because the Academy liked the movie, probably enjoyed the non-original elements of the score, and gave it the W.

Orchestral scores you want to put on concert? Oh, my. How eagerly can someone wait for you two to get to Japan? Edit: How is "this movie" not well liked? Maybe it's a "film people thing", but it's weird to even hear someone refer to it as anything other than "his best ever film". The gesture in the violin instantly gave it away for me. And the score carries it so hard, and that's by design.
