If he’d been less heavy handed with the exposition it would have been so much more effective. The tension before that was so good. The Dev coming in ruined it for me.
"It Lies" could very well be a prologue or a prequel to something bigger and more complete. I know the writer already told here why it's short, but everytime I hear that thing speaking back to us in our own voice it chills me to the core. It's probably because I'm scared of monsters that can mimic voices from other people, dead or alive, but this thing always creeps me out (in the good way) no matter how many times I watch this video.
I liked the "It Lies" game. I want to see more and to know where the developers are going with this one. The creature is very enticing to the point I want to know what's it's purpose

3:50: It's Japanese custom to remove your shoes when you enter a home. Those were your shoes by the door. When they disappeared as you stepped out, it indicated that you had put your shoes on.
i liked it lies just for that echo. nice flex, devs lmao also a monster mimicking speech is my favorite horror trope i watched stigmatized property on gabus channel but i love when you and she play the same games because it's two different perspectives game 3 felt like duke nukem. i want more games like that
lesson of game 1: don't let your high schooler live away from home lesson of game 2: keep your dog on a leash lesson of game 3: get some friends to play games with
It Lies is probably one of the most unique and cool horror games I've seen in a while. The usual creature mimic premise, but with a twist. Loved the chase theme and it's enourmous.
I always thought any 'mimic-type' creature was scary as shit. I love Horror and not many things get me, Paranormal, nasty creatures, witches, etc - but anything that Mimic's something always scared the shit out of me and hearing that worm-like creature in the second game call out in your voice, it's terrifying! - That last game had a really cool concept imagine if an online MP game really gets posessed and someone is trying to reach out to you to free them from the game...That could make a really good story!
Oh man. I just imagined a horror game where there was such a imitator or mimic, but you don't realize that partway in the game the npc got replaced by a mimic. That is pretty freaky
Man, that was some great stuff. My fav was It Lies, it's confusing, and the creature calling out to you was great and creepy. You do find a similar thing in the movie Annihilation, and I am really glad to find it in a game. I just hope it doesn't become overused and loses its charm.
I love that. I also agree it's something I want to see more of, but I don't want it to become over-saturated. I was a bit disappointed that the creature didn't try to mimic the dog barking.
It was nice seeing there was more to NPO than I initially saw. When I first saw it, it seemed like it was just the first part. I agree that the exposition dump takes away the horror and mystique of the game. It would be better if all that was said is maybe a repeating message of get out or server announcements that vaguely hinted that you should log off.
Mister Unicorn john likes these kinds of games, slow burn and all. If you watch some of the earlier games that john was scared of and liked, they are not scary, creepy at all. They are unique in terms of content, or deals with self deteriorating ideas and has few or no jumpy jumpscares. Sometimes they are very slow and stalks you.
I was looking for someone else who had the same thought as me. Very interesting movie, the bloody cries from that bear were so disturbing and chilling. I loved it!
I remember seeing someone else playing "It Lies" and it's absolutely horrifying, I'm glad you played it. Creatures mimicing voices to confuse or lure in prey is the scariest horror concept to me. (You didn't die, by the way. You just have to keep following your dog while chased to eventually win.)
The curse, or whatever it was, in Stigmatized Property reminded me of the Richard Matheson story "Disappearing Act". Most people probably remember the Twilight Zone adaptation, "And When The Sky Was Opened". Anyway, in the story a guy is keeping a journal because one of his mistress had gone missing and no one can remember her, but he still remembers. Then one of his friends name disappears from everywhere it was written, and then he goes missing, and still nobody can remember. This continues to happen with everyone the man knows as he questions his sanity. Then his name disappears from his ID. He goes to a local place and no one knows him. The story ends with him writing in the journal in a cafe, and then ends mid-word as he disappears. It's a terrifying idea, that you disappear and no one remembers you, or that someone you know disappears, and eventually even you forget they exist.
That second game tho. The creepy monster design, unsettling ambiance, great sound and music combined with the monster being able to call out to the player using their own voice makes for a terrifying experience. By far my favorite out of the three.
the little "clink" sound that happens every time you pick up money in the first game sounds exactly like the coin slot noise at the beginning of Walk Man by TMG and thats all I could focus on for the whole game
"Stigmatized Property" appears to be based on a short horror film from a found footage series from Japan called Tokyo Videos Of Horror. If you like curse and occult themed horror it's a great series to check out!
I got jumpscared by the end of that first random horror game john wolfe HOW DID U NOT GET JUMPSCARED YOUR ALWAYS TAKING ALL THE JUMPSCARES LOL LIKE THAT SHIT SCARED ME SO MUCH I JUMPED SO HIGH FUCKING GOD DAMMIT!!! THAT WAS SO LOUD TOO
3:40 It's commonplace to take your shoes off and put them in a spot like that when you walk into a house. it's not a mistake, it's just not that well done xD
@@dabestcouldnt5116 Chinese don't take off their shoes indoors? Ok you probably misread. I'll elaborate. For this to make sense the streets must be as clean as your floors or the floors must be as dirty as the street. You don't wear shoes in your bedroom or in the bathroom. So where do non-unique-japanese-culture normal people take off their shoes?
I think the shoes at the door isn’t a mistake, it’s to show that the character you play left her shoes while she was inside and then they disappear when you walk back out because she put them back on
It Lies frustrates me because it's _so close_ to being good. cool hook, nice ambience, the feeling of being stuck somewhere uncomfortable but not being able to leave, it's all good, but they dropped the ball hard on the expository notes. nothing kills any feeling of horror for me faster than 1) telling me there's a monster and 2) leaving anthropological study notes on it's behavior and appearance. it would've been SO much more effective if the game told you absolutely nothing about it's ability to mimic the voice of it's victims, because as soon as you read that, you know it's gonna mimic the dog, and you know you're gonna hear your own voice, which demolishes the impact both those events would've had otherwise.
Hey John. As a long time fan I really gotta say that just the simple detail of specifying that you think these games are "(GOOD)" really helped me out. I am always looking for good games to play with my friends. I would really like you to keep up this naming structure as I want a big list of good and effective games to play with my friends for next Halloween. Looking forward to your next upload.
This was a great episode. I liked all three of these quite a lot, and you seemed to as well, John. So good all around. I love the atmosphere of both the first and third games. I think I just like that PS1/Early PC polygonal era look and general atmosphere that Puppet Combo uses as well. That stuff just feels so much more unsettling to me than polished 3D graphics.
I used to want to be a Japenese teacher because it paid around 72 million yen...then someone reminded that you had to convert it to dollars...long story short, don't tell friends your dreams.
He got excited because there's only so much left out of 100. He thought he'd have to find all the 10 yen coins. Its value here is irrelevant. It might as well have been 50 cents.
mental I know I just thought it was a bit funny. Cause I mean, I’m never really looking o. The streets and all of a sudden find .50 and is probably be excited if it really did happen. But it’s funny to think that $100 is a VAST difference to $1 here in America and he probably doesn’t know the dollar value of Yen.

Ever watch the Ju-on? That one is dark (metaphorically and literally af)

Well for me he uploaded at midnight so I'm kinda late 🗿
"3/3!!!! I WIN!!!"
John, this is why I love you
The last game had me until “this game has the power to raise the dead” 🙄
If he’d been less heavy handed with the exposition it would have been so much more effective. The tension before that was so good. The Dev coming in ruined it for me.
Me too
"I stored the data of my wife in the servers to keeping her alive forever" would be a nice variation and less cringey, maybe?
@@Bane_Amesta that kinda gives me Soma vibes
Reminds me of Petscop. "In a way, recordings have the power to raise the dead. They're kind of scary."
I thought in the second game something was going to start mimicking the dogs barking
Does John have a playlist of the games that scared him or made him jump at all?
LilBrownSuga would be interested in checking that out, too
This needs to happen.
Check out Love Sam, he liked that one
I don't think he has made a playlist but ive watched a couple from this one and he gives these games high praise ruclips.net/p/PL1b5q2Qvey2JrdKv5RWRn_h-LlFe8tSeK
Omg sewing him really terrified is something I’ve never seen except from Visage when that old lady peeped around the corner
Idk haha I appreciate the fact that when you shout into the hole in the second game your voice echoes
The use of sound in It Lies is great. I hope the creators explore this more in future games.
“I’m walking around with a stool like an a*#hole!” I’m dying!
I like how John plays the game multiple times to show us the different endings. Thanks!!
31:19 HOLY SHIT THAT GOT ME. That's legit creepy...hearing your own voice and then seeing that thing hop out
3:50: It's Japanese custom to remove your shoes when you enter a home. Those were your shoes by the door. When they disappeared as you stepped out, it indicated that you had put your shoes on.

"That was 50 yen! That's a lot!"
Oh yeah, $0.5 is a lot.
It's a lot in the context of the game, compared to picking up 10 at a time.

I was more fine with shoegate than yengate. It only mattered relative to the amount you have to collect.
In my book, 50 cents is always welcome. I can use them for gacha machines. (I legitimately can't remember what we call them in America; I am ashamed.)

lesson of game 1: don't let your high schooler live away from home

It Lies is probably one of the most unique and cool horror games I've seen in a while. The usual creature mimic premise, but with a twist. Loved the chase theme and it's enourmous.
Corpse party actually did that concept as well where the victims trapped were erased from everyones memories
John, thank you for all the amazing content over the years. Love your personality, style of commentary and a sense of humor.
30:35 The embodiment of -suddenly there's boss music- meme xD
"It lies" featuring SCP-939.
And the third game featuring SCP-106.
I assume you love the Midnight episode of Ten's Doctor Who then? XP
Look up the actual Jabberwocky story if you're interested in the creature.
Man, that was some great stuff. My fav was It Lies, it's confusing, and the creature calling out to you was great and creepy. You do find a similar thing in the movie Annihilation, and I am really glad to find it in a game. I just hope it doesn't become overused and loses its charm.
Deviantel yes the screaming bear! I immediately thought of that too!
@@U2LUV07 HELP....MEEEE
I love that. I also agree it's something I want to see more of, but I don't want it to become over-saturated. I was a bit disappointed that the creature didn't try to mimic the dog barking.
It was nice seeing there was more to NPO than I initially saw. When I first saw it, it seemed like it was just the first part. I agree that the exposition dump takes away the horror and mystique of the game. It would be better if all that was said is maybe a repeating message of get out or server announcements that vaguely hinted that you should log off.
John in the barn: it can't get in here!
creature: bet.
22:30 I don't know why, but that was the scariest jumpscare I've ever seen. I got major chills!
Same absolutely terrified me
That... wasn't the Jabberwocky I was expecting!
Wait, they‘re ... GOOD?!?!
2nd game reminded me of that mutated bear from movie Annihilation. That was an exceptionally interesting movie.
I was looking for someone else who had the same thought as me. Very interesting movie, the bloody cries from that bear were so disturbing and chilling. I loved it!
35:35 - I love how you missed that dark figure at the distant left side of the screen.
"Listen guys thats a donut with blue frosting, I want it" me when i see food in games, im hungry now fack

*I MUST GO. MY MURDER NEEDS ME*
The curse, or whatever it was, in Stigmatized Property reminded me of the Richard Matheson story "Disappearing Act".
When I first seen the "No Players Online" game, I quoted you in the vid, when I seen the red room lmao. "Remember Red means scary Ya'll"
Ok.
Saw, not seen
That second game tho. The creepy monster design, unsettling ambiance, great sound and music combined with the monster being able to call out to the player using their own voice makes for a terrifying experience. By far my favorite out of the three.
I'm going to comment so the algorithm pics of this video and distributes it into people's related section. You need more recognition John.
the little "clink" sound that happens every time you pick up money in the first game sounds exactly like the coin slot noise at the beginning of Walk Man by TMG and thats all I could focus on for the whole game
Jesus that fps games is unsettling as hell. Reminds me of when i would play old fps games on an empty mp map, which would make it creepy.
"Walking around with this stool like an asshole" Idk if John was trying for the euphemism, but I laughed
"Stigmatized Property" appears to be based on a short horror film from a found footage series from Japan called Tokyo Videos Of Horror. If you like curse and occult themed horror it's a great series to check out!
Is it on Netflix or....?

Hi
loving the fact that you go in depth with your reviews. Too many RUclips gamers don't bother to say more than just "good game would play again"
Two years later, It Lies is still a really neat little game
"50 yen?! That's so much!"
*laughs in conversion rate*
This was a great episode. I liked all three of these quite a lot, and you seemed to as well, John. So good all around. I love the atmosphere of both the first and third games. I think I just like that PS1/Early PC polygonal era look and general atmosphere that Puppet Combo uses as well. That stuff just feels so much more unsettling to me than polished 3D graphics.
"blue frosting! What flavor is it? is it blueberry?" --- GASP "the donuts are gone" 😂 PRIORITIES lmao love you man
I love seeing johns excitement at the amount of Yen he collected when 50¥ is about .50cents lol
Kiki Spears Tell me about it. I always hear these stories of people who are paid what seems so much in non-American currency and then you hear the conversion value and it’s just like ...oh lol
@@kikispears4749/videos Wait what? You mean 720000 dollars is not a lot? (Even though it's really 6600000 due to 1 yen not being EXACTLY 0,01 dollars, but still)
35:34, in the distance there's a black figure, it disappears when you walk closer to it.
