If you analyze it from its lyrics, actually the genre changes make sense! Bc the lyrics is about a conversation between a girl "who got a boy" and her friends, and they keep changing pov between the girl and her friends. I Got A Boy is like a mini musical drama - from the intro to closure. The genre and beat changes actually follow the lyrics along, and when they change pov/going to the next scene, the genre and beat change too. I Got A Boy is truly ahead of its time.

I was today years old when I found out they were referring to the beat per minute when Jessica says "Let's bring it back to 140" and I am as mindblown as they are in the video. I never thought I would ever learn anything new about SNSD at this point anymore.
It's a double reference - time AND tempo. So you know it was planned. And the planning wouldn't have been easy around the weird structure. Pure and unadulterated genius from SM on this one.

Nowadays SM groups sound very much the same and when they don't the music is bought, never idealized at their house. YG on the other hand is still doing the same thing, the only groups lacking are the ones not in control of their music, aka Blackpink and Treasure so I really don't know what you're going on about.

Their reactions to I Got A Boy were hilarious! I remember everyone (including me) not liking the song when it first came out because it's so messy. But compared to the songs that groups releases now, I realized that I Got A Boy is indeed unique and I don't think we're going to have another song like it.

That's why they pick the songs on which they can talk a lot musically - doesn't have to be popular/hit songs, but that doesn't mean the song itself necessarily good or bad -, so they won't have to fill the video talking about the visuals

i think IGAB is actually one of my favorite SNSD songs, and ive been a fan since debut. i have never heard a song quite like it before.
평가를 보면서 들으니까 악기나 리듬에 집중하게되는듯. 평소에 SM 노래를 들으면서도 느꼈지만 이렇게 보니까 진짜 음악을 평범하지않은, 다양한 시도에 디테일을 더해서 만드는 음악적으로 대단한 회사라고 느껴짐

wolfgang Yeah, they produce some of the best vocalists in kpop too. It’s why I mostly am a stan for many SM groups haha. Taeyeon, Jonghyun, Kyuhyun, Luna, Lina, Chen, Kyungsoo, Baekhyun, Wendy... hell I can name all of them but that would take too long. I guess I stan groups that are vocally well-rounded.

Authentic reactions to IGAB!! Damn!! As a sone, IGAB blew off the roof! No one expected that! Not even us sone. At first, the song was all over the place! It was a complete mess! But come to think of it, it was actually somewhat an "organized chaos". Messy at the right place. Honestly, up to this day, IGAB is still ahead of its time. No one could ever duplicate the impact of IGAB. Props to the composers, songwriters, production staff, and to all the people behind the song for creating a MESS!! The most beautiful MESS ever!
AND also thanks to the girls for delivering it so WELL! i don't think other girl groups would make it sound as good, if a cover of this song is ever attempted.

I Got A Boy was the best SNSD song for me, I remember that this was the first SNSD song I heard because of my friends telling me to join them, memorize and danced IGAB at our school, lol. The ironical thing is: the beatdrop also happens at 140 but I knew the bpm was also 140 so I was shocked whn last week I found out it was also the minutes!!!
140 refers to the BPM (beats per minute) of IGAB at the chorus. Usually, a song has a constant BPM throughout, but this is not the case for IGAB.
BPM is a number that musicians use to gauge how fast the beat of a song is. The higher the number, the faster the beat. Sad songs have low BPM, happy songs have high BPM.
When you listen to the official audio version of IGAB, when Jessica says "Let's go back to 140", she's also referring to the part when the fast chorus kicked in (which is at 1 min and 40 secs). In the same time, she's referring to the BPM which is actually a really cool detail this song has.

songs like IGAB and red light by f(x) were considered "weird" and were polarizing in Korea, didn't chart as well as their other songs, but they were legit some of the most interesting, exciting songs in kpop. and it was good for the industry that they came out

the thing is you cant compare this song to next level or house party because those songs have 2-3 different sections and the transitions are abrubt. i got a boy has like 5 different sections and the transitions work so perfectly. next levels sections all sound electronic and have the same feel at least but house party for me doesnt work at all.

I Got A Boy was and IS still ahead of its time. Starting from the song itself, down to the lyrics and music video. Everything about it was so perfectly well done. As one of them said, it’s SO MUCH in a way that’s not overwhelming. And that’s something only Girls’ Generation could’ve done, I’m so glad SME got this song for them. It’s been showcasing how much on top of the competition they are.
