My grandfather was in the 63rd Infantry Division KIA April 8, 1945 just after crossing the Saar River. After the news of his death our family received a war booty chest and inside was a 1944 M98k and a Walther P48 dated 1944 also. He never saw my dad or his twin brother but we sure have respect for him...and that badass trooper laying dead with the grenade in his hand and the BAR next to him.
Sorry for your loss. My great uncle was in the 26th Div and was KIA March 30, 1945 while clearing out the town of Hanau. The U.S. took a lot of casualties in late ‘44 and throughout ‘45.
I moved to Germany and now live in Koblenz. The building that they are broadcasting from is nextdoor to me. The crack in the brickwork is still visible.
