This was the title fight in 1919. Notice the innovative camera angles and how clear it was for an indoor fight for that era. Gibbons' cut flowed so freely that, when the ref would move in to break a clinch, Gibbons would wipe his face of the ref's shirt.
Despite losing this fight and never becoming a recognized champion, Gibbons influenced several generations of fighters with his style and skill. That St. Paul style stuck around for decades: the last fighter of renown using it was Del Flanagan from the late '40s to the early '60s.

I had no idea this Fight existed on film. Mike Gibbons is such unique fighter having basically quit boxing what seems like multiple times. From a debut in 1907 & fighting significant fights in 1922 is such a long span he had a career unlike many

I had to watch this fight multiple times to understand the techniques and strategies both men are displaying.

@LegendsofBoxinginColor probably on my 5th time watching it. Both Mike Gibbons and Mike O Dowd knows how to feint, grapple, throw combinations and know defense really well.
For example. You'll see both fighters feint differently, shifting their weight to make the other assume he'll throwing a looping or a overhead shot, will feint with their feet or just bend at the waist to make each other think their going to leap in.
Another thing I notice, is they step into their punches and if they miss they use the momentum to close the distance and immediately start grappling to nullify any possibility of any counters. I notice Mike Gibbons did this tatic more often than Mike O Dowd.

@@antoniomosley9410 I have mike gibbons book he mentions that you can slip hooks and uppercuts in a certain way when ur advanced but he refuses to teach it in the book. Any idea if he displays it here?
