Back in late 70's and early 80's adjustments to impose the model created incredible wealth for very few and extreme poverty to many for a loooong time ('83's economic crisis was part of it) When you only consider GDP per capita Chile appears like a miracle, but if you dig deeper you find that the 1% takes 33% of that, that there's no real middle class, that poverty is much higher than what numbers say, etc. If you like the subject "fundación sol" has many studies about economy, wealth distribution, etc, all based on official information.

I just have a few comments on the history of the chicgago boys. First lets clear out that the so called chilean economic miracle never happened under Pinochet, and the neoliberal reforms brought the country to ruin in 1982 huge crisis, poverty, banks closing, total disaster,so they had to tone their neoliberal agenda down. Still, Chile reached a peak in inequality just a year before the plebiscite for bringing democracy back. Afterwards, center left government made lots of refors, specially an increase in taxes so they couod invest in public infrastructure, wich was the key to our export model, and thats when we started growinn at 6, 7%, with a lot of government involvement to diversify our exports. but our rise was shortlive, and we have been steadily declining or stagnating for almost 20 years, no increase in wages, taxes for the reach, lower productivity and growth every year, higher private and public debt. The truth is the Chilean neoliberal model never made us that good, only the toned down version with social democratic reforma, that never went to far because the constituon didnt allow it. The so called progress of the last years has barely managed to undo the damage made by the dictatorship and its economic advisors, but we ahvent really improved inequality in over half a century. For anyone interested, i reccomend the book "Hacia un nuevo pacto" by Oscar Landerretche, it explains this economic issues magnificently. hope it is in english, if not i reccomend anyone to read Jose Gabriel Palma, creator of the palma index for measuring inequality, he is chilean but writes papers in english, so you can learn more from there

This is the first talk that is informative about what happens in Chile and why. Liberal democracy and free market got its problem in practice. It is not to be ridiculed or laughed at of course. My personal humble view is the solution lies at the willinnness of a scociety to hold itself together in a collectivistic manner, which has been overlooked and underestimated even to the extent of being politically incorrect. Individuals do not have the obligaiton to the whole society and the duties to sacrifice for it, neither do politicians with their personal ambitions with power. The elites of the country has the responsibility to reshape the regime and system to tip the balance in favor of the collective whole in terms of physical and economical security.

GDP per capita tells you nothing. It just takes the GDP and divides it by the population as if it were distributed evenly. It is not. 33% goes to just 1% of the population, leaving the rest of the country poor. Similarly, when they say poverty has reduced, they are just referring to the fact that they changed the definition of poverty so that it applied to fewer people. The actual material conditions of the population did not change. Chile is only a “success story” for the upper class, and its recovery from the Pinochet-induced crisis of the 1980s depended on the country’s copper mines, which were never privatized. It also depended on a government bailout (sound familiar?). Chile is in upheaval because of the very inequality that lead to Allende’s election in the seventies. And just as the response back then was a violent repression it is once again violence, as shown in the video.

This brings to mind Americas absurd poverty line. First off, it doesn’t take into account the fact that some areas are far more expensive to live in than others (a “federal poverty line” is a laughably absurd metric by any standard) secondly, it’s so low that to qualify for any public assistance you have to be making, as an individual earner, less than 12k a year. If you adjusted the poverty line to an amount you would need to afford all basic necessities of life, a full one third or more of Americans would be living in poverty. The same goes for unemployment. There are almost as many ways to fudge unemployment numbers as there are unemployed. The real unemployment rate in the US is something to the tune of 20%

However, how a country could work if there are teachers whose are indoctrinating our kids with marxism ideas since 10 years? Now the socialdemocracy is the most popular idea here, people wants a state controller of the economy, increasing taxes and trying to separate Chile, becoming this country in a plurinational country.
Our constitution is the best because prevents every colectivism idea can work in Chile. Now, those socialdemocrats and marxist can change Chile because all those Kids are adults.

No one should have more food than others. In present societies there is a mismatch between what we are vs what is. Inequality will always lead to resentment because we have been hardwired to think like that, even between rich people, either by competition or jealousy. All of our psychologies need to be rewired or we should try to have a more equal society. USA has the same problem, while Europe has this problem less and people are generally more happy there.

That's not an easy question, honestly, I think we humans are far more complex than that. Just trying to sum up our nature out of certain traits to point a political ideology and give it a kind of natural basis is not enough.
And also, why all of the sudden in current societies? why not in say feudal societies? Maybe it's because they had a great time. Is it? Not all societies are equal, in the sense that there are many differences between each of them. What you are saying doesn't apply to societies in which there are low levels of reciprocity between the governed and the rulers.
Should we have more equal societies because no one should have more than others? Who are you to say that? how is that not even the very reason why we have this problem in the first place.
I don't buy this modern communitarian narrative that we need to implement changes because there is some kind of intrinsic need for balance in society.
I think we humans do not have a limit to our desires, and because today it is so easy for everyone to participate in politics and express their voice, then governments are easily subjected to popular will.
Perhaps we do need some kind of reforms, but no, not for the reasons you mentioned but if any, it would be to try and control that self-destructive desire that represents envy.

The problem is the politiciana are inside the state (mostly from the extreme left) judges, IRS (SII), and many others. You can avoid the law, even the taxes if you belong to a left political party (just look for that in the local news, everybody knows).
I can't believe the video interview an English teacher and a woman from a political party talking about economics (lol). Almost all economists agree Chile is better now.

There're actually 3 sides or "viewpoints" for this social issue:
-Chile's a poor country because of foreign companies making money out of our Health and Educational systems, water and electricity (This is what the majority of people see, at least 60% of it)
-Chile needs a few changes to make people "less poor" but we need to keep the neo-liberalist system running no matter the cost (This is what the government and the central-right say/believe in, 10% of the country more or less)
-Chile's under attack from the commies/cubans/venezulans, they've brainwashed the poor and want to start a communist regime (This, as dumb as it may sound, is what the people on the far right believe, which is 20% of the country more or less; aka the "rich" class. This is why you all will see some sort of civil war between the "far-right-rich" [we call em "fachos"] and the "poor" protestants)
Chile is a big mess right now, but you can all blame on the "rich" and Pinochet's constitution for making us poorer and poorer each day, and not allowing us to make new laws to even the field.
