For naysayers, why don't they just have all Starfleet vessels escorted by smaller vessels? I see multiple reasons for it from a tactical standpoint.

    • @davfree9732
      @davfree9732 2 года назад

      Considering Picards use of saucer separation in Farpoint, I'd have thought more focus on the need to separate modules at Warp would have been among the points of the video.
      MVAM might seem OP, but the need for warp capable, faster deployment and reliable reconnection of modules is something StarFleet would start researching after Picard did it to bamboozle Q.
      Not to mention doing it in front of the Borg. It's like a Robot anime where the bad guy waits for the giant robot to assemble, except for this the ship is disassembling.
      Also, much as I like the concept, I have to admit the design must be a power hungry beast in that you need three warp cores in each ship. Granted, probably not an issue given the Defiant's Core miniaturization tech, but pulling power from three cores and needing storage for the antimatter probably would severely limit the time out on deployment

  • @AdmiralBlackstar
    @AdmiralBlackstar 4 года назад +63

    Y'know...the MVAM get shit on a lot, but it does have it's uses in an escort role since you can have one ship preform the escort duty of three. The Defiant once had trouble dealing with a pair of BoPs that kept using their numbers and cloaks to keep the Defiant off balance until Worf recognized a pattern, one they'd done intentionally to lure him into a trap by tricking him into blowing up a transport vessel that decloaked there instead. Having the ability to split into three would've evened the odds and prevented such tactics from being as effective.

    • @rvaughan74

      Or you know Starfleet could just bite the bullet and make fighters to launch.

    • @AdmiralBlackstar
      @AdmiralBlackstar 4 года назад

      @@rvaughan74 The idea has merit, however the closest "fighter" we've seen is the Peregrine class fighters seen used by the marquis and only a single fleet battle (I think. It's been a while so they may have reused stock footage for other battles) where they did little damage to proper warships, being more of an annoyance and those fighters were relatively large already.
      So unless there's some changes to how effective small vessel weapons are relative to the defenses of larger ships, the Prometheus and it's MVAM ability seems like a sensible compromise during this era.
      Though that is something I've pondered, and if I were writing for the new trek series, I'd be introducing an enemy with some new shield-piercer torpedoes that change the balance and force starfleet to come up with new tactical doctrine and designs for dealing with it as well as reverse engineering their own versions of course. I'd suspect highly agile and small craft (i.e. fighters) would become far more sensible torpedo delivery platforms, but I suppose writing that into proper trek is probably a pipe dream for me right now.

    I love this ship. It's whole design philosophy is, "how can we do long range force projection on the cheap?"
    Instead of building three long range vessels, they built two short range ones and bolted them to one long range vessel. Then while they were at it, the designers decided to only have one set of support facilities spread across all three ships, and enough automation to allow one dude to fly all three if needed.
    The design just screams, star empire at fighting a massive war with unbelievable ship and personnel losses looking for an engineering solution to both.

    Honestly? I like the MVAM. It takes 'divide and conquer' and flips it on its head. The ship itself is bulky, not terribly fast when turning/performing sublight maneuvers, but the MVAM allows it to split that bulk into three separate but equally devastating smaller warships that then gang up on a single target and rip it to pieces. It easily obliterated a D'deridex-class Warbird, a ship known for its resiliency, and drove off a Tal'Shiar task force the second the ship was back in Federation hands.
    Seems like a pretty good ship to me.

  • @valorum999
    @valorum999 4 года назад +2

    I happen to like the ship. I mean what was the point of splitting the Enterprise when dealing with the Borg? Its kind of part of star trek lore that the more targets there are the less firepower you can concentrate on a single target. So it would make sense with this design to start the fight as a single ship and when the shields begin to get low go into the multi-vector mode. Also having three ships in one means triple the redundancy. There's a warpcore overload? well just split that 1/3rd of the ship off and you still have 2 left. Need to escape a hopeless battle? Program two sections to hold back the enemy while you retreat in the 3rd. In fact it would make sense for all Starfleet ships dedicated to deep space exploration to have at least 2 warp capable sections that can separate as escape pods would pretty much be useless.

Flanking a more powerful heavy hitter like the Akira , allowing it to tank while they go around the flanks in strafing runs. I also imagine if the Nebula had not been disabled it would have hung back in the second line providing shield support while just spamming torpedoes. The core concept isn't all that bad as some situations could change to where it would be beneficial to have three separate ships. That said, it feels like this is meant as a main-stay tactic of the ship rather than a situational tool.

    The Prometheus was my favorite Voyager-era Federation starship. I have the Eaglemoss model; it was actually 1 of 3 that convinced me to buy Eaglemoss' Star Trek models in the first place. Though I have to admit the dinky little warp engine that pops out of the saucer section is stupid. If such a small warp engine can move that big saucer section around, why does the ship need 4 huge warp engines? Don't tell me it's because they have to handle more power, I get that, but as far as I know that dinky little engine on top of the saucer section is rated for high warp, which means the 4 huge ones don't need to be _that much_ bigger to handle their duties. They should've left the saucer section as an escape vessel like it was on the 1701-D, with maybe the capacity for warp 2 so the crew doesn't die of old age before reaching the nearest starbase.

    I actually love the design of the Prometheus Class. The Multi-Vector Assault mode was dumb. But the design I really liked.
    Arrowhead saucer, implies a more aggressive mission profile. Perfect for a tactical vessel.
    The four Nacelles for redundancy and extra push to hit and maintain those high warp speeds
    The Multi-Vector Assault mode is just silly, while I can see it as the ultimate endpoint of Saucer separation technology it still has problems and I'd like to think starfleet kept making the class even without the MVAM.

  • @thethan302
    @thethan302 4 года назад

    I see the multi-vector saucer separation idea as an attempt at force projection. By turning one ship into 3 you can now be in 3 places at once. if you find yourself outnumbers you split your ship into 3. that's 3 targets drawing fire instead of one.

    Why have the ship break up. Simply have a hanger bay for 6 or so enhanced runabouts, or fighters

    • @3Rayfire
      @3Rayfire 4 года назад +4

      I would say generally because those ships are underpowered in comparison. The reason they brought in the Defiant was because Runabouts weren't going to cut it against the Jem'Hadar. The Peregrines were alright but they really weren't decisive. The concept of this ship is stick three Defiant caliber ships into one. I think it's a better design for long distance warp travel as a combined unit, then you get the added firepower and three fully powered escorts when it separates.

      Fighters just aren’t that effective in the Star Trek universe for a few reasons.
      1 - Highly advanced beam weapons can easily snipe them out of the sky.
      2 - Can’t carry a very big power core so the shields/weapons are no match for larger starships.

      Problem with Starfleet is that it's trying not to be too aggressive even though it's clearly a warship. Personally, I find that stupid.
      The Prometheus-class should be classified as a "tactical assault cruisers" or "advanced heavy cruiser". It's too big to be an escort like the Defiant-class and it's smaller than explorer classes like a Nebula-class (now I'd love see that one being refitted as a battleship if Starfleet adds the tactical and include retractable pulse phasers and a set of micro-photon torpedo launchers in strategic areas of the hull). I actually like the multi-vector assault mode. That's a clear mastery of automation and advanced technology given the state of beta and alpha quadrants. The Klingons are too focused on offensive power while stuck on a conservative ship design language and the Romulans are too heavily reliant on their cloak and intimidation factor. Then there's the Dominion and the Breen. They just have a lot of big ships and too many smaller attack shops and fighters. Let's also not forget the Borg. Their high level of threat shouldn't be ignored.
      I think the use off multi-vector mode is an ingenious show of force projection while use pack attack to to swarming tactics in overwhelming much larger vessels. Purpose-built warships like the Prometheus and the Defiant are a very necessary "evil". When things get ugly, it's getter to have warships like them than risk vessels who aren't made for war.

    I would love an exploratory version of this ship, scaled up to Galaxy class size if not a little larger, with each section having its own hangar bay from which it could deploy fighters or Danube class runabouts. With the 3 main sections and 3 runabouts per section (plus the captain's yacht) it would be a small 13 ship fleet all by itself and capable of rapid scientific investigation as well as being extremely good at pack tactic combat.

    I can see why the Prometheus is one of a kind. Combiners and splitters are realistically impractical even in a sci-fi setting such as Trek. The Promethus is literally 3 starships in 1, in which you might as well build 3 starships and then work on futuristic C3i. Even a Defiant-class carrier would've been more practical. Fun tho, you'd never think Paramount would try to do something obviously out of a Japanese anime.

    - One chunk (two-forward, one back) getting them all, like an Intrepid.

    I can even see how a Long Range Science Vessel could benefit from such a design concept.
    I just don't like some of the execution of this concept in the design.
    Like how the Saucer/Command Section just pops up a single miniature warp nacelle, which I find a ridiculous design.
