As people can see this dance the Matachines is a mix of Spanish and Native American culture, done in thanks to the Native people. My family has always dances for San Lorenzo's feast day, all the way back to 1693. I am dancing in this video with my farther and 3 sisters. It is know as the Fiestas of San Lorenzo, because August 10 is San Lorenzo's feast day. And San Lorenzo is Bernalillo's patron saint.

A few years before 1693 the Apaches came through and tried to burn Sandi pueblo to the ground and all the people of Bernalillo saw the fires garbed there guns and road to save the tribe. My family was part of that. My family has lived near and in Bernalillo since 1680. Thank you Sandi and Isleta tribes I owe you my life.

Matachines are a type of dance that comes from Spain. Yes the meaning has changed over time. This one is in Bernalillo NM. We dance August 9-10-11. The first year was 1693. It is a dance that the Spanish did and do to thank the Native American for saving there life's on August 10 1693. After the pueblo revolt of 1693 where the Native American burned all the Spanish churches and killed the Spanish for pushing Christianity on them.

JuanVanessa Garcia no it is not a Spanish dance. it is a mixture of the Spanish culture and indigenous Mexican culture. The indigenous Mexicans started this to thank the Virgen de Guadalupe. Religion was brought here by the Spaniards

It is heartbreaking to see the idolatry my people still practice. Better to know the living God than worship a saint carved of wood than cannot see, hear, smell, think, help.
