Every ounce of effort you put into this video was worth it. Thanks for making this. And thanks for giving me the extra push to watch the beautiful film that inspired it
Thanks man, and thank you for all the help early on with the extra opinion on the audio and all that. I'm glad we could watch the film together and be emotionally wrecked haha. Thanks man
Thank you so much for adding the personal message at the beginning of the video, I really felt what you were saying. I'm so glad i will be able to watch the Violet Evergarden movie in theaters, it meant so much to me and I'm so blessed I will get to see the work of the amazing people at KyoAni.
Thank you so much, I'm glad to hear you're no longer in that place as well. I will keep this comment close when I feel like I want to critique myself. Thank you
I feel like this is one of those videos I could watch all day and it still wouldn't be enough. For some reason I feel gratitude? I've been feeling more stressed than usual lately, even stopped working on projects that I absolutley love but watching this was just...really calming and nice. Thank you.
I'm really glad that it's resonated with you in that way. It's some really stressful times on top of other stresses I'm sure you feel. I'm not going to pretend I know anything about your situation but I'm glad that my video can give you some comfort that you felt you needed. Thanks for letting me know :]
Thanks man, you legitimately pushed me to work so hard on the intro. Your work on the analysis section inspired me. I thought, "oh man, I need to work so hard to live up to what kor did with the visuals"
I've found a great plot analysis from a youtube comment written by Nicolai Marquez: ''People often praise it based on the production values, and how it elevates the simple story of two girls drifting apart. But the movie is so much more nuanced and understated than that. And is precisely because of the production and how delicate the animation is that we are able to see even the thought process of the characters just through their faces and body language. But yeah, there was A LOT of though put into the characters in the movie, and also in how the movie plays with parallels almost in every way it can. I remember I had mixed feeling about that "I like your Oboe" scene the first time I watched it. I couldn't help but think that Nozomi was being an asshole. The second time around though, I realized that she was... well, being an asshole, but not on purpose. She realized that she was putting up a wall all of that time, and it was amazing. Realizing that the characters feel a certain way without the movie telling you directly that is one of the best achievements of this movie, and why I think is such a masterpiece. Also, It shows that to get through peoples walls isn't easy, and that Nozomi actually said something honest because Mizore got through her.But she didn't say it in the confession scene, because people don't work that way. She was still nervous there to acknowledge her feelings, but she still does at the end of the movie. She'd already thought about it for a while. Also, more parallels. At the beggining of the movie, in the walking scene, Nozomi is always on the front, and as they're walking up to the classrooms, we see many times how Mizore "looks up" to Nozomi, both in literal and figurative way. At the end, when they're finally "on sync", they're leaving the school, and Nozomi is still on front, but that means she is "looking up" Mizore now , because she has gained a new understanding of her, and she admires her now. This movie is just kind of perfect.'' hope everyone like it:)
I know this comment is almost a year old but I rewatched Liz and the Blue Bird in English dub the other day and just to add to how amazing it is, I really understood a second time around how the movie portrayed character thoughts and motivations so carefully like a perfect jenga tower; it's the first time I can remember as well where a film was so good at using its medium for characters it even utilized what others can see as an achingly slow pace because that's how Mizore is, that's how she sees the world, very thoughtfully, guarded, and anxious- the groundwork of the movie itself is built on character expression Also in having the chance to compare dubs, Liz is one of those rare movies where I feel the voice acting in either elevates the story, atmosphere, and characters in a way only those languages and the cultures tied to them can In Japanese for instance Nozomi replying "I love when you play Oboe" she says it in a reserved way unlike her usual social butterfly self, as if Mizore's mannerisms have rubbed off on her and she's still processing how she feels in that same deliberate way the pacing has given us, she cares but she doesn't want to show it so readily when she's only just hit her realization point and has to figure it out for herself and is considerate of Mizore's feelings In English the same line is spoken with a passion that's trying so hard to hold back from spilling over everything Nozomi feels, as if yet again Mizore has rubbed off on her but in the manner of the courage she gained to confront Nozomi with her feelings in the science lab, but her voice doesn't dare spill everything out yet because it's still messy and unrefined, she needs to put her emotions together yet with that one line delivery you see her unravel as much as in Japanese The first is a great embodiment of Japanese reservations, the second is a great embodiment of Western expressiveness Liz and the Bluebird is a masterwork that offers infinite interpretations and few definite answers much like other films of its level
@@Ibukization Wow, I never knew there was an English dub. Thanks for ur sharing. Imo, I think the reason Nozomi said that line was due to her self-pride. And that's very authentic to me, cuz like the comment said, it is how people work.
Shabu this was so wonderful it's always facinating to hear you talk about the intricacies of musical scores - but this one in particular because of how much it means to you hits hard. Also your tribute song even better even more beautiful than when I heard parts of it a little while ago You're such a talent thank you for sharing your story and that talent with us
As someone that has been struggling with anxiety recently this hit pretty hard. I relate to a lot of what you said in the beginning, but I think you have a great way with words even if you don't think so. Fantastic video and analysis, I think we can all tell that you really put your heart and soul into this. Thank you!
Thank you so much, I'm glad you liked it. I'd also like to say that dealing with anxiety is really hard, but it does get better. I'll say I still struggle with it constantly, it's a constant battle but it's just important to keep fighting. Listen to your body and know you're not alone in it. If you ever need someone to talk to, don't hesitate to reach out to me :)
This video alone made me start bawling just hearing you outline and put into words why the track was so perfect.... With regards to you not doing videos and whatnot after the arson I had a similar response in that I watched Tamako Love Story the day after and then didn't touch *any* anime for the next month just because it immediately reminded me of the horrible event. It still makes me tear up every time I hear about the event because its just so horrific.... Thank you for doing this video........
Thank you for telling me, you have no idea how incredibly nervous I was about this. Hearing that it resonated with people honestly means so much, it's so hard to digest and deal with things that are so far out of our control. We all grieve differently, it's just hard. Thank you
I have not seen anything from you except this video, but I am going to subscribe simply because you talked about one of my favorite pieces of music ever. When I first heard it in the anime, I knew I was watching something special.
I saw your video, and decided I had to watch the movie first. When I came back here, I was surprised to hear myself speaking with your mouth in the first minutes. Thanks for guiding us through what gives us such special times
I'm glad it resonated with you, also good choice on watching the movie. It's beautiful and I'm glad I had some part in having you watch it (even if it's small). Thank you for telling me this
Thank you for this video. Thank you for having the idea of it, working on it, finishing it and putting it online. There must have been a lot of self-doubt between all of these steps, but you found the strengh anyway, thank you for that. The part about not having the right words and other people being better and everything was especially relatable to me, as i struggle with that a lot. I kinda have that exact feeling after watching this video actually, wich is quite ironic haha. This video resonated a lot with me and made a difference to me, and i'm sure i'm not the only one, so you can be sure it was worth it. I think i'll try to work on a tribute of my own, even if it's not much. Hang in there.
i haven't really been able to process the kyoani incident properly ever since it happened. i've kind of just phased it out of my everyday thoughts, but i didn't even really notice it until now. your video really helped me remember the beautiful hearts and minds that were behind these wonderful animations. thank you.
Thank you for telling me, I have never been more anxious making and uploading a video. I was so terrified about not portraying everything perfectly, to hear that it resonated with people really means a lot
Thanks for making this video. I also watched this movie during my more extreme sides of being a shut in then shortly after bought the blu-ray to show my brother. Like you, depression and anxiety keeps me from doing things I care about, passing time only makes it harder to improve in my own writing and music. I was first exposed to Kensuke Ushio’s music in A Silent Voice, so I immediately recognized him on Liz and The Bluebird. His ambient sounds and organic noises resonates with me because it sounds raw or amateurish which allows someone like me, who lacks complex aural skills, to feel connected to the sound or timbre rather than the the harmony/melody itself like in Jazz or Classical. Your video helps me understand what I felt about Kensuke Ushio’s music. I didn’t know about timbre concepts like prepared piano, originally, I thought he recorded ambient noises to achieve his sound. Once again, I’d like to thank you for putting this video out.
I'm really glad you were able to connect with it. I made it in part because I knew I couldn't be alone in this and wanted to show that we're not alone (I don't know if I said that the right way but hopefully you know what I mean). Like I was soooo nervous about making this video haha but the fact that you resonated with it at least a bit makes it worth it. On a lighter note, prepared piano is super sick and I'm glad I could help shed some light on some of its many mysteries hahaha. It is such a wild and cool concept that's really only limited by your imagination and I think that is so interesting. I hope things are better for you now, I know for me there are still days where it's very hard but I just try to keep fighting it. If you ever need anyone to talk to feel free to contact me on discord or twitter :]
Didn't expect the first five minutes would be so thorough and personal. They said the more beautiful your soul are ,the more your feel the pain. I think that's why your works are so delicate:)
Thank you Bilal, that really means a lot. Thanks for always interacting with the content it's always really nice to see what you have to say. That's a very nice thing to say, thank you
I love seeing the technical breakdown on music and sounds, it's a very unique thing, something I've only been introduced to on your channel. I really like listening to music but I can't say I'm passionate about it(or really anything) the way others can be, but still seeing the breakdown of a piece, how it was created, and insights on what it was trying to convey with the different parts from someone who is more qualified to understand that than I is enlightening, and I will always continue to watch your videos.
Duuude, that's actually so awesome. That makes me really happy, I'm glad you liked the movie and the show! Also thanks for watching :) I hope you liked the video
Don't know If you saw this reply the first time around ... just in case ... A Japanese fan of Liz identified the piece Mizore plays on the piano as Carl Czerny: 30 Études de Mécanisme, Op.849 No.3.
@@versosciolto6320 oh hm found it, i do see some similarities tho, a user said to search Liz and the bluebird etude piano sheet on google. apparently its just called etude
What a great video! I actually hardly know anything about music, even probably less than most of the basics, but I still love music and can recognize how amazing tracks can be just by hearing it alone. I was able to learn more about music and its process watching your video. I love this movie and bought it immediatly as soon as it came out. I love KyoAni and Sound Euphonium. I found your channel from the Land of the Lustrous pieces. I especially was intrigued with Cinnibar's theme. I didn't even know what an erhu was and I love the instrument now and I think I can even tell when it's being used. I would also like to hear the song you made, it really does sound like you're using a "string" instrument and not a piano. Overall, I'm glad to see you making a video again and now I want to watch this movie again (along with listening to the soundtrack)!
Thank you so much! This was such a nice comment. I'm so happy that I could help shed some light on some musical mumbo jumbo and play any part in fueling enjoyment of said music mumbo jumbo. If you ever have any questions about music stuff, any level, let me know and I'm more than happy to answer to the best of my ability. I'll release the piece soon so people can listen to it more carefully, and I'll try to get a video out sooner this next time hahaha. Thank you so much for the support
@@ThatMusicNerdShabu You're welcome and thank you for the reply :)! If I have any questions, I'll ask, part of me is interested in making music some day (also music is just cool so I'm most likely always willing to learn more). Take as much time as you need.
I came here hoping u were talking about the song she plays during their meeting (the one where they are gathered by the piano and she starts playing a gleeful tune). Sadly i was dissapointed, but. I was enticed by ur voice and ur views on the music which I 100% agree with you, it's an amazing soundtrack for an amazing movie. The song you did talk about however was interesting to hear as u broke it up. I still don't know what song Mizore plays on the Piano in the film tho T_T
Ah well I'm sorry to disappoint you haha, I'm glad you were still able to get some enjoyment out of the video regardless. I'll be honest and say that after listening to it, the piece she plays reminds me of something but I can't remember. I tried transcribing the melody and looking it up that way but google proved to be wildly unhelpful. I also asked a buddy of mine who is a bit more familiar with piano rep and he didn't know either. It sounds a lot like a warm up, I'll keep looking and try to figure it out though (unless you find it first, in which case please tell me hahaha) :]
@@ThatMusicNerdShabu lol ur better at this stuff than I am so i'll entrust this responsbility to you haha if it does turn out to be a warm up then I guess i'm dissapointed? but impressed that they/she came up with it, cuz gotta say its a good pick me up.
You could do a video for each track on the Liz OST, easily. doublelead,girls,i-vi, Ririka's cute little theme, are some of my favorites. Love this video
Ah thank you so much! I have been working in the studio the past couple days but in the next couple days I'm planning on releasing the piece somewhere (I made a couple really small modifications to fit the video and I want to make sure everything is good before I post it somewhere). I'll let you know when I do though :) thank you for the kind words
So good. Love the personal aspect, vulnerable and honest. The part that blows my mind is the bow'ed piano and how you even could hear that to make the distinction! I love learning from your analysis.
Bowed piano is super super rad, I'm glad you like the analysis :) thank you so much. I was super anxious about the intro and I'm glad it resonated with people
Man... Aren't your videos something special... Your channel makes me wonder how many amazing creators are wondering around the platform without the heaps of people following them. It makes me kind of sad and annoyed, but atleast I've stumbled apon you somehow! Keep up the good work even if it ends up being 2 vids a year. We need it now that we've experienced it! And I really hope you release your piece soon. It's beautiful!
Thank you so much Daniel :] That really means a lot. I get really anxious about my uploads and upload schedule so hearing you say that the quality outweighs those things really means a lot. I wish youtube made it easier to find great smaller channels (I'm not saying mine is great just in general hahaha) but unfortunately it seems to go against the system. Either way I'm happy you stumbled upon my channel and seem to enjoy it. Thank you for the comment and the support :] I honestly keep flip flopping between just releasing the piece with a picture or something or editing something for it and I end up doing neither hahaha. I got to get on that soon
You can create a jp itunes account then use jp apple gift cards. Or if you're just looking for liz you can buy physical then download it onto your computer
I think the easiest way is to buy it physical and have it shipped to wherever you are :] There are a few stores you can buy from online or ebay. Those are probably the easiest. Or if you have access to Jp itunes, you can buy it there
Your videos seem to be well made but I dont know jack shit about music composition and such and a lot of things you say are lost on me and cannot fully appreciate your videos. Is it possible to make some sort of into video of some sort related to anime?
It is definitely possible, do you have any thoughts on what you'd like to learn about? Just start from scratch or a little further in? This is something I've thought about a bit before but get kinda stuck on where to begin. During videos I try to build up context rather than do lengthy explanations on certain concepts. I try to show what it's like to think from a composer perspective and kinda what we think about when scoring. I do want to do my best to make things accessible though so I could definitely try and make a little guide video explaining some concepts or techniques that I bring up frequently. Thanks for the idea :]
Also if you ever have any questions, I am more than happy to answer them here in comments, on twitter, or on discord :] Just as an extra layer of options for ya

Love what you did with the introduction, it came out beautifully! Glad I could have a hand in this ♥️
Thanks man, you legitimately pushed me to work so hard on the intro. Your work on the analysis section inspired me. I thought, "oh man, I need to work so hard to live up to what kor did with the visuals"
I've found a great plot analysis from a youtube comment written by Nicolai Marquez:
''People often praise it based on the production values, and how it elevates the simple story of two girls drifting apart.
I know this comment is almost a year old but I rewatched Liz and the Blue Bird in English dub the other day and just to add to how amazing it is, I really understood a second time around how the movie portrayed character thoughts and motivations so carefully like a perfect jenga tower; it's the first time I can remember as well where a film was so good at using its medium for characters it even utilized what others can see as an achingly slow pace because that's how Mizore is, that's how she sees the world, very thoughtfully, guarded, and anxious- the groundwork of the movie itself is built on character expression
Also in having the chance to compare dubs, Liz is one of those rare movies where I feel the voice acting in either elevates the story, atmosphere, and characters in a way only those languages and the cultures tied to them can
In Japanese for instance Nozomi replying "I love when you play Oboe" she says it in a reserved way unlike her usual social butterfly self, as if Mizore's mannerisms have rubbed off on her and she's still processing how she feels in that same deliberate way the pacing has given us, she cares but she doesn't want to show it so readily when she's only just hit her realization point and has to figure it out for herself and is considerate of Mizore's feelings
In English the same line is spoken with a passion that's trying so hard to hold back from spilling over everything Nozomi feels, as if yet again Mizore has rubbed off on her but in the manner of the courage she gained to confront Nozomi with her feelings in the science lab, but her voice doesn't dare spill everything out yet because it's still messy and unrefined, she needs to put her emotions together yet with that one line delivery you see her unravel as much as in Japanese
The first is a great embodiment of Japanese reservations, the second is a great embodiment of Western expressiveness
Liz and the Bluebird is a masterwork that offers infinite interpretations and few definite answers much like other films of its level
@@Ibukization Wow, I never knew there was an English dub. Thanks for ur sharing. Imo, I think the reason Nozomi said that line was due to her self-pride. And that's very authentic to me, cuz like the comment said, it is how people work.
love these analysis. been watching your videos, and just realised that you had 3k subs. like, man, you're criminally underrated.
Shabu this was so wonderful it's always facinating to hear you talk about the intricacies of musical scores - but this one in particular because of how much it means to you hits hard.
Also your tribute song even better even more beautiful than when I heard parts of it a little while ago
You're such a talent thank you for sharing your story and that talent with us
Isla, you're so sweet, thank you so much
As someone that has been struggling with anxiety recently this hit pretty hard.
Thank you for this. I'm far from a music and sound connoisseur but I can appreciate the work you put into it, and the genuine feelings you shared
Thank you for doing this video........
same
Thank you for telling me, you have no idea how incredibly nervous I was about this.
I was so terrified about not portraying everything perfectly, to hear that it resonated with people really means a lot
great video!Liz and blue bird is one of the most impactful anime i've seen, with such an expressive art and music
It's amazing! Also, thank you! I'm glad you liked it :)
That's a very nice thing to say, thank you
@@ThatMusicNerdShabu Sound! Euphonium series really left me a wonderful experience ,so thank YOU. The pleasure is mine:))
@@bilaldent3577 Ah I'm so glad! It's a wonderful show :]
Wow, the piece you wrote sounds straight out of Liz and the bluebird😄
I love seeing the technical breakdown on music and sounds, it's a very unique thing, something I've only been introduced to on your channel. I really like listening to music but I can't say I'm passionate about it(or really anything) the way others can be, but still seeing the breakdown of a piece, how it was created, and insights on what it was trying to convey with the different parts from someone who is more qualified to understand that than I is enlightening, and I will always continue to watch your videos.
Thank you so much, that's such an awesome thing to hear. I'm so happy I can fuel your curiosity towards music and can offer some insight :]
Omg😳😳!!! I fall into this series cuz of your 2019 introduction of Liz and Blue bird. This is really a amazing show. Thank you so much!!
And I'm still on the binge of season2
Duuude, that's actually so awesome. That makes me really happy, I'm glad you liked the movie and the show! Also thanks for watching :) I hope you liked the video
Your channel is really something special. Keep up the good work!
Thank you very much, I will try my best
Thank you for the video!
beautiful, absolutely wonderful
Thank you, I was really anxious about this one. I'm glad it turned out well
If these videos take 8 months to come out then I'd be perfectly okay with that. Greatly done Shabu!
This actually means so much, you have no idea. Thanks man, I really appreciate it
This video in itself is underrated, second time watching this and it totally resonates with me a second time.
Don't know If you saw this reply the first time around ... just in case ... A Japanese fan of Liz identified the piece Mizore plays on the piano as Carl Czerny: 30 Études de Mécanisme, Op.849 No.3.
@@versosciolto6320 tysm
Amazing video ! Thank u!
This is really very moving, thank you
I'm glad it resonated with you, I was really anxious making this video, so words like these are really nice
This video took a while to come out. Worth the wait though!
I'm glad it was worth the wait! I tried to work really hard on it, I'll hopefully be a little quicker on the next one hahaha
@@ThatMusicNerdShabu To be fair I said I was going to upload the Anohana analysis next weekend last time we spoke and I have delayed it until 2021.
You could do a video for each track on the Liz OST, easily. doublelead,girls,i-vi, Ririka's cute little theme, are some of my favorites. Love this video
You honestly could, there is so much to unpack in this score, I'm glad you liked it. Thank you :)
Loved this video
Is there anywhere we can find the song you made for this video? I really liked it and wondered if there is a version of it without the interruption.
Ah thank you so much! I have been working in the studio the past couple days but in the next couple days I'm planning on releasing the piece somewhere (I made a couple really small modifications to fit the video and I want to make sure everything is good before I post it somewhere). I'll let you know when I do though :) thank you for the kind words
loved this video, are you excited for kimi no iro?
We missed you, Shabu!
This actually made me really happy, sorry it's been so long. Thank you for this comment though, I missed you guys too
So good. Love the personal aspect, vulnerable and honest. The part that blows my mind is the bow'ed piano and how you even could hear that to make the distinction! I love learning from your analysis.
Bowed piano is super super rad, I'm glad you like the analysis :) thank you so much. I was super anxious about the intro and I'm glad it resonated with people
Happy to see you back!
Thank you! Happy to be back
oh man, I miss your videos shabu
Thank you for the comment and the support :]
I honestly keep flip flopping between just releasing the piece with a picture or something or editing something for it and I end up doing neither hahaha. I got to get on that soon
@@ThatMusicNerdShabu You do you. So far it's been beautiful. Good luck with the work in progress, wink wink
Great job on this! I may have to make a complimentary piece on Matsuda's contributions : ) Lmk if you'd ever like to collab on something!
Always down to talk about music stuff ^-^
Oh and thank you so much for the kind words, I'd love to see that video
💕
Omg!!!
Can anyone tell me what is the piano piece where in mizore plays piano while the girls are talking about college
A Japanese fan of the film identified the piece Mizore plays on the piano as Carl Czerny: 30 Études de Mécanisme, Op.849 No.3.
Wait, you use the Japanese iTunes store? How?
You can create a jp itunes account then use jp apple gift cards. Or if you're just looking for liz you can buy physical then download it onto your computer
My dude how’d you get the ost of the anime
I think the easiest way is to buy it physical and have it shipped to wherever you are :]
There are a few stores you can buy from online or ebay.
