5.4 is significant considering that the Mount Saint Helens eruption began with a 5.0. Stay safe Bushcraft Bear. Something is building up under ground.
This island is going to split up the ridge from the south East Coast to the Calder and slid into the ocean. It will cause a tsunami over 900ft. tall, and hit the East coast of the US.

5.4 is a decent size for a “small” earthquake.
Exactly. If u watch Dutch 5s CAN be indicating volcanic activity. There is volcanic activity going on worldwide. I had said from start this lava flow ext would be going on 3 or 4 months. They had said 3 or 4 weeks. Hope I'm wrong. But I don't think that volcano is even close to being over. The ash there. I'd wear mask even if I didn't feel or see it.
I appreciate this gentleman's reports. But I'd kinda rather he bugged out to safer location

earthquakes are very unsettling, and then followed by aftershocks, it keeps you on edge for a while. I cannot imagine adding an active volcano to that. Breathe andknow that God is watching over you and all the people of La Palma. THank you Mr. Bear.

Lately, some people have been saying that the volcano is slowing down. This didn't feel correct. I was thinking that a build up of energy was happening, for a big release. The lava has been increasing at the cliff to the ocean. There will be another large earthquake soon. Please pay attention to your ìnstincts. 🙏🌍🤞💜

That's a BIG earthquake! But it's also NOT surprising if the volcano is beginning to slow down. All the subsurface area that was filled with lava will be emptying out and the land will readjust, especially deep down. Think like a cake or bread, if the pressure or temperature lowers too fast, the cake or bread will fall. Same idea with the earth!

I live in California. I have experienced a 6.9 & 7.0 amongst several "smaller" ones and I can tell you that it instills fear when the ground shakes & literally rolls. Building standards in California are high and must meet earthquake requirements, but I have no idea what the Government requires on the island. Fantastic reporting Benjaminl

@@emmavillarreal3515 Loma Prieta was 6.9. During that one I was trying to walk down a hallway and the walls on both sides hit my shoulders.
I've experienced a 6.9 also. It felt like it wasn't going to end. I was only a kid at the time and I wasn't scared until the apartment building across the street from ours collapsed. Scary stuff

Yes, 5.4 seems like nothing to read about, or hear about, from a Californian perspective.
It's not, but it seems like it is when you read about it.
It'll spook you real good to be in it, but it's not until 6.5+ is breached that it really seems like it might make front page news.
That's when the California natives used to rumbles would leave a puddle on the way to the strong table or doorway.
What scares me is that they are getting stronger. Praying for all of you 🙏

For anyone who's not aware, the Richter scale is logarithmic. Each increase of one unit on the scale represents a 10-fold increase in the magnitude of an earthquake. So, going from a 5 to 5.4 would be quite noticeable I would imagine.
This is an important point, but so is to note that the Richter scale is not really in use any more, the numbers are now almost always reported on the moment magnitude scale. They are approximately the same, but not quite. The moment magnitude scale is able to characterize more kinds of earthquakes, and is more precise for large events. As for how much stronger a 5.4 is compared to a 5.0, since the log factor is 10 we can just divide 10^5.4 / 10^5.0, which is 10^(5.4 - 5.0) or approximately 2.5 times more energy.

About a 5.4 quake was a foreshock of the 6.9 Loma Prieta quake in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1989. The 5.4 occurred about 5 months before the 6.9. 6.9 is about 15 times the strength of a 5.4

The day before the 6.9 earthquake a dog pooped in a street. Pretty sure that was the cause

A 5.x quake @ 32 km deep says this is not over.
I was in a 5.1 quake when I was about 10 years old. In Tacoma Washington.
Yea, I will NEVER forget that evening.
Was at our living room table, helping Mom with homework from her job (long term substitute teacher).
The P wave struck, made my hot coco shake and jump around. Looked up to ask my Mom why she shook the table, only to see her glare at me!!
For about 2 seconds we blamed each other silently, until we realized the other thought the other person caused a little hot coco to spill.
Mom was about to say something when the S Wave hit.
At school, we were taught repeatedly to dive under a desk. Mom was taught to stand under a doorway.
We ended up having a tug of war and argument while the pine wood floor was undulating like ocean waves 🌊.
But after just over 30 seconds, it stopped.
No damage to the house…..except mom spent 2 weeks sanding the micro cracks out of the pine wood floor😅.

Usually after a lull in many Earthquakes you get a big one..
If you are refe4ring to a large eruption l,ike Krakatoa then you would be mistaken. They are 2 different types of volcanoes with 2 totally different types of magma.... This is the same type of magma we see in Hawaii... These do not cause large explosive eruptions.

The la palma volcano clearly isn't a shield volcano....its a strombolian type volcano which produces both eruption types of explosive and effusive....the lower vents usually are effusive and the upper vents are explosive at the same time during the same eruption.....before 2018 Kilauea erupted nonstop for 30 years....in all that time have you ever heard of the big Island bein buried in feet of ash? shield volcanoes produce lots of tephra not huge amounts of fine ash(yes there's a difference)....and if u look up kilauea's eruptive history you'll see that the volcano has and will change its eruptive style from effusive to explosive and back again... The Chemical make up of magma isn't the only thing that affects eruptive styles it also depends the magma's age and the chemical make up of the solid rock it's traveling thru to reach the surface as well as water content....look it up.... its all in black white for everyone to read

That's pretty strong. I was in the Northridge quake in california in 1994. We had a 5.5 aftershock several days later. I was at work at the time and while running for the exit, I almost got knocked off my feet.
I don't handle earthquakes well at all. Was a child when the 1989 earthquake hit the san francisco bay area. It's something you never forget. The might and force of the very earth shaking beneath one's feet... rendering you pretty panicked and helpless, really isn't a fun place to be. Now I bounce to me feet like a cat, and flee outside!
