I believe part of what makes you the World Class fly tyer that you are, has to do with your personality. You seem to me to be one of the nicest people anyone could possibly meet. The type of person that I would definitely want as my neighbor, and not because of your fly tying skills either. You are soft spoken, very humble, and seem to take life as it comes and this extremely high degree of “centered-ness” and calm contribute to the exceptional quality of your work.
Thought about getting a basic kit and tying again but I don't really need anymore flies to add to the 159,000 I already have (haha) not got that many but like all fishers have more than I will ever use ! Started fishing in 1969 and my dad used the same three flies all season and caught as many trout as anyone else. It is so relaxing watching a master at work. Tight lines.
Could use a shiny bronze wild turkey feather for the body instead ....or a blue mallard, variations on this pattern...suspect they will catch trout too!
Love tying this type of pattern cracking video Davie. Would like to see Fulling Mill release all their hook types in a barbless black nickel option as well as some of the other more modern hook shapes. As odd as it sounds I just don’t like tying on bronze hooks and never used barbed.
Hi Davie, I like your flies and speceil your way of Tying. I tied som time ago a fly with starling Wings, but i dont find them under your samples anymore. Could you please help me …? Thanks in advance, Rüdiger
Great looking soft hackle mate. Have you seen the book The North Country Fly by Robert L Smith. Yorkshire’s Soft Hackle. I’ve got the book. Has a lot of great patterns. But having some trouble getting some of the feathers. Been looking fo for them but hard to find. That little beauty there will catch a few nice bows. Thanks for sharing mate. Best Regards, Ken
I noticed you use wax in allot of your flies . What kinda of wax do you use. I see that you keep it on a finger when tying .I'm curious to what kind of wax it is and where does someone find it. Love your tying videos. Learn allot from you .
It’d be great if you could tie the whole series - I’m especially interested in different winging styles in the wet fly debate. I’m never sure when/if to use paired slips, bunched & split or bunched upright. Even Rob Smith doesn’t offer a definitive view. Also, have you seen Michael Theakstone’s old book, Davie?
Hi Duncan, Many of the first wet flies I tyed came out of books called Let's Fish the Clyde by Robert Sharp another was Clyde Style flies by John Reid and I would never be without them..I have seen Michael Theakstone's book but I don't own a copy though I should look into buying one..Over the years I have tyed so many different wet flies but I do use a lot of substitute materials and the flies still work really well, the softer the fibres the better they work.. All the very best Davie
Davie, that's a K.I.S.S. fly, love it. So useful. Was wondering what the color variants are or do you use? Also, could you please list your materials list? Thanks! Time for me to get tying while it's hot
Hi Guy H, I've listed the materials I used for you to see and I'm glad you liked it as it's a great fly and certainly worth having in your box... All the very best Davie.. Hook, Fulling Mill All-Purpose Medium size 14 Thread, Pearsall's Gossamer Purple Silk Rib, Magpie Fibres from the Tail Body, Pearsall's Gossamer Purple Silk Hackle, Starling Body or Neck Feather
Thank you Davie. You really have inspired me to start tying again as I rehab my shoulder. I just bought quite a lot of new supplies from my local fly shop #anglersall in Colorado. We all sat and spoke about how much we love watching your tying videos. Greg was there too and his videos are also a favorite of mine. Also, trying the fullingmill hooks for the first time (one of my purchases)
Thank You Dan, I'm glad as well that the videos have got you back into tying again and also for all the kind words..Please say hello to Greg and everyone at the #anglersall... All the very best Davie...
Hi Ernie, I used Fibres from the tail of a Magpie though you could use a fine peacock herl if you don't have any..I'm glad you liked the fly... All the very best Davie..
Hi George B, It was first published in 1855, the copy I got off Ebay was published in 1995 (North Country Flies by T.E Pritt..I'm glad you liked the fly... All the very best Davie...
Hi James, I use Veniards Clear Varnish which I have done for more years than I can remember as it's always worked well for me...I have attached a link to the stockists of their materials for you to see if there's one near to where you live as they will be able to get it for you..Thank you for the kinds words you gave me in your other comment.. www.veniard.com/stockists.asp All the very best Davie
I did enjoy it, Davie... Thank you. I've looked for the T.E. Pritt book before. I'd love to own a copy. Ran into this .pdf copy of it... nwflytyer.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/north-country-flies_pritt.pdf A professional copying but I'm guessing the color plates aren't equal to those in the book. Still, better than the "no book" I have... =] Also... the site the .pdf is from has a number of other "Classic" books in .pdf form, as well as other interesting "stuff". Mike
Hi Mike, I got a copy off ebay for £12 so if you have a look you could find a copy for not much money though I do use this site to look for books I don't have as well...I'm glad you enjoyed the video... All the very best Davie...
Thank you for mentioning E-Bay as a possible source, Davie. I forget about them more often than not. Most times I look for used books here... www.usedbooksearch.co.uk/ This is the best book-search I know of. I have found a person can get differing responses based on differences in search so I often will search both 10 and 13 ISBN, also tittle, also author. Occasionally, a much better offer shows up. Mike

Nice to watch and will try it on the Waioeka River this week. Thanks from down under in NZ.
A starling and herl. Very simple, very basic, very effective. Thanks, Davie.
You are amazing. Great idea with the magpie tail feather being dubbed onto the thread. Every time I watch your videos, I learn
Great little fly Davie....was hoping to see a video of it after you posted a photo the other day.

A very nifty ribbing technique Mr Mcphail!!!
Very nicely done!!!
Simple, beautiful, and I'm sure very effective. Thanks Davie
Lovely fly Davie. Magpie tails feathers seem to be few and far between to buy on the internet. Thanks for sharing.
Could use a shiny bronze wild turkey feather for the body instead ....or a blue mallard, variations on this pattern...suspect they will
catch trout too!
Thanks again Davie, I would love to see more videos of the other patterns in the book.
Absolutely beautiful. Love these quaint wet flies.
One of my favourites, works all season. Screams fish. Beautifully tied. This and a Stewarts Black spider.
This one will be going into the box. Thanks Davie! If we ever meet, the first cold indigenous beverage is on me. :)
I really like this fly. I plan to tie up some just for the enjoyment.
Beautiful fly, beautifully tied. Thank you.
Davie, that's my kind of fly to tie, mostly because I'm sure it will catch and I think I could manage it! Thanks
Thank you David . Nice fly

hi Dave please tell me on the hooks gamakatsu series f21 they fly or not?)
I have never used this hook before though I would say it is a hook for tying flies on...
All the very best Davie...
I'm sorry for the insolence, but can you show me how to use it, what kind of flies you can knit on it?)
what could I substitute for magpie?
Hi Jerry,
Just use a fine strand of peacock herl, one from the eye would be ideal...
All the very best Davie....
How do I tie nice flies like that when I have big sausage fingers? ;-)
That's why you use tools... ;-) I have hands like barn doors, but I can still tie midges in size 22. Practise, my friend, practice...
Nice fly but nothing black in it .... strange how they named their flys? Tight lines!
should you have used a size0new scale
Very " fishy " Thanks. Reg

What would you suggest as a substitute for magpie herl? It seems to be well near impossible to find here in the US.
