One of the features of the Chessnut EVO is that multiple chess engines are built-in, including not only the strongest engines - Stockfish 15 and Leela Chess Zero - but also Maia Chess! Maia Chess is a unique AI-based chess engine that is trained to play HUMAN-LIKE moves at various levels of strength! This is an excellent feature as it makes solo games against the computer much more enjoyable.
In this game, Maia attempts a Fried Liver Attack and is caught out by the Ponziani-Steinitz Gambit! Impressively, it does get trapped in a human-like way!
The chestnut EVO looking really good I have to admit. I might actually have to treat myself to one once it's fully developed. This is the only way for me to play chess the old school way without having any social life :D

I'll definitely be picking this up. I have an air and love it. Thanks for testing out the no internet functionality
No worries!
great video. i never saw that gambit before...nice
Glad you liked it!
Nice video!
Hey, thanks mate! I love your channel as well! 😁
Lol i like you Both
Nice gambit, now I won't be as scared of the fried liver!
😁
Thank you
No worries 👍
Does the board offer a feature to light up when checkmate is delivered? One of my favorite features of chessup. I hope to see it implemented here
At the moment, there isn't a special light display with checkmate. I suspect that it wouldn't be a difficult feature of Chessnut to implement, however, if there was a strong demand.
Fantastic review. The only thing is the piano background music makes it harder to hear what you are saying.
Yes please stop using music.
Heya Ive got a question, they added a selection for the engine lookahead for Maia in the chessnut app, any idea what the default lookahead was before this? The 1100 engine is kicking my butt at 6 look ahead haha
I'm not sure.
Great video, thank you.
Do you have any indication of how much the Chessnut VIP subscription will cost? I think it's available in the career menu option on the EVO. Thanks
Chessnut has advised me that pricing is for training personalised engines. In this communication, they stated that there will be three complimentary training sessions so customers can experience the service before deciding whether to purchase. After that, the training sessions is $19 per month, $39 per quarter, or $99 per year.
It should be noted, however, that I suspect that Chessnut hasn't really firmly decided on final pricing so that this with due caution!
Hi Michael, I'm completely in Love with your channel. Do you know something about Evos release date?
Regards,
Harry
The correspondence that I've received from Chessnut is that their Kickstarter launch will be in July, the first batch of units (~ 100 units) to ship in September, and the remaining orders to ship in October.
I'm scared to check out the price. I'm thinking go all out on a nice wooden board and pieces or go the convenient all-in-one tech chess board like this one.
Kickstarter backer's price is USD $459. However, the price will go up substantially after the Kickstarer campaign finishes (very soon).
What's the lowest ELO you can play maia? I've been playing maia on chessify but the lower I can play is the 1100 bot and I'm still a beginner, if the chessnut evo has more beginner friendly human like bots I would think about getting one to improve my game.
I think that the lowest Maia bot available is the same at 1100.
@@chessnoob64 thank you!
I'm not trying to be negative about this, but I'm struggling to understand how a player can improve with the Maia engine.
It would be similar to playing another human player. Learning comes from reviewing and analysing the game afterwards.
@@chessnoob64 Maybe I have the wrong info, but it looks like that engine only goes up to about 1900 ELO. That's critically weak if the intent is to use it to analyze the games with that engine. If it has access to other tools, that would be great. However, your main point is correct: learning comes from reviewing your games, not from playing.
@@paulpowelljr1092 Maia goes to 1900 but other engines are stronger for analysis. That said it is not really an analysis tool - your mobile phone is probably better!
I used to play for hours upon hours as a kid with my dad. Learned all the openings and mid game tactics. Spent hundreds of dollars on books. I haven't played 25 years. I'm wanting to get back into chess with an electronic board and I'm wondering if this is too advanced for a beginner?
Also, does it take batteries or what?
That's brilliant!
Given your prior experience with chess, it's very likely that you'll be able to get back into it quite quickly! If I might make a suggestion, I personally think what you need/should do first is to create an account/subscription on Lichess and/or chess.com. Maybe see whether you enjoy playing against others online first, before committing to an electronic chess board.
Assuming that you really get back into chess, then I think any of the electronic chess boards (the Chessnut range, but also potentially other brands too) that integrate with the online platforms can potentially really increase your enjoyment if you like playing with real pieces, and visualising the game over-the-board. Once you work out your preferences in terms of what you want to get out of an electronic board, the choice between the various boards would be easier to make.
I don't think this board is too advanced for a "beginner", but it's going to be an expensive board and depending on what's important to you with regards to features (e.g., tournament sized board? portability?) it might not be the best option.
It has a rechargeable battery built-in. It charges through a USB-C port.
@@chessnoob64 basically, I want a physical board to be able to play against a computer and that will scale with difficulty as I get stronger in my game that I can put down on a small table or even in the bed maybe. I had the old school radio shack chess board endorsed by Gary Kasparov. And it was a great challenge early on and allowed me to test out my new openings that I learned really well. I just want something that is of quality and that will last me for years and years to come. I'm assuming it comes with updates. Thanks for taking your time out to respond to me by the way.
@@LelandYarnell - the EVO It will certainly do what you want if your primary goal is to play against a computer. I suspect, in fact, that this will be one of its strengths as it has the Maia, Stockfish, and Leela Chess Zero bots that you can set at varying strengths. However, the EVO will be somewhat expensive and is quite heavy and not particularly compact in size.
You might want to consider the Chessnut Air as well. It's physically smaller (as it doesn't have the "tablet") but the board and the pieces are identical in size to the EVO. The Air is not an "all-in-one" device, and you'll need to connect it to your phone or tablet via Bluetooth, but you can then play against chess.com or Lichess bots. These bots are regularly updated and can be quite fun.
The Chessnut Air can also be connected to third party android apps. ChessDojo in particular, has a range of computer personalities at varying strengths that can be fun to play.
Hope they would release a wooden-look board, like CN air
Probably could send a comment to them! The board backing material is actually wood - painted a metallic colour!
Does it have human vs human mode?
Yes.
How did you get the board now the kikstarter has not eaven started?
How do RUclips channels usually get prototype products (it's in the title) to demonstrate? 😉
@@chessnoob64 thats clear that 7ts to Demo but did you asked, or did they asked?
With all due respect mate, that's commercial information that I'm not going to share here. Cheers.
The prototype, so far, looks quite interesting. It reminds me of the ChessUp board. Hopefully it works better than the ChessUp.
Thanks 👍
I think ChessUp is pretty decent
