as a trombone in my marching band, i personally love this song! it defiantly sounds amazing when an entire marching band plays it. -Caravel Academy Marching Band
I am not nor have ever been much of a musician or even participating in marching band, but when I hear this song, I really want to see a well trained marching band perform it. Hopefully this arrangement will mean it will be coming to a halftime show this season.
In the current version, the woodwinds match the sound of the piano in the intro of the song. They also stay relatively soft and allow room for the brass to add the synth part on at meas. 13. I think the current arrangement matches the original the best.
@yujing zou I got rid of the parts of the song where it was just rap and a stagnant beat. Whenever there was a change in the instrumental I included that in the music. There is enough to the instrumental of Can't Hold Us that it can be played pretty well as a stand tune.
I guess you must be a very good student in your high school, you're fairly intelligent!! :) There're a number of other subjects that you're good at, aren't there?;)
I know about that too. It's optional 8va for the bari saxes that don't want to or cant go for it. That little message isn't shown on the screen in this version though since I added it later.
I love it! only thing is, I think there should be an extra measure of silence before 45, then have the low brass come in with that melody, and carry it up the range to trumpets (so like tuba, bari, trombone, horn, then trumpet) with the repeats. Just a friendly suggestion :P
Psh, I sure can. It's just the fact that they didn't take the time to care for the instrument. Plus, what if the bass clarinet would have to play the bass line instead? No one would know.
RitzyBoon Well to be honest, when I arranged this I honestly didn't give a single thought about the bass clarinet. I still refrain from thinking about them. Sorry, that's just the way it is. Things will never be the same.
Well putting clarinet music in lower octave wouldn't be correct… It's mostly has the same rhythms of a tuba, along with different notes that, depending on the song could be the same or they could have chords… EDIT: sorry, I know I'm late…
I play slide trombone in concert band and marching baritone in marching band. I assume a "marching trombone" is similar to a marching baritone. Basically, you play the valves just like a trumpet, but use the same mouthpiece as a trombone. It doesn't take but a few weeks to get used to the fingerings, especially if you still read them like "3rd position" and "4th position" in your brain but translate it to the valves. (3rd position is just the first valve, 4th position is the 1st and 2nd, etc.)
I actually played cowbell a few weeks ago at one of my school's basketball games. If you're not moving your whole body to play it, you're doing something wrong.
Hello Matthew, I took your Can't Hold Us arrangement and made some edits to the drum parts and the ending mostly, may I use it for the pep band at our school? I really appreciate the work you did to transcribe it, it made it much easier for me. Many thanks! -Pablo
I'm not sure about the grading system, but I would probably put this at a "Medium" level. It's pretty suitable for high school bands, and maybe some middle school pep bands as well.
I have very limited experience with piano and its sheet music, so it would take quite a long time. I would suggest that marimba and vibe follow the chord structure of the song, which in this key is Fm Eb Cm Db. This is basically a four chord song. The melodic parts shouldn't be too hard to figure out, since they are only really a few notes.
I played bari sax in high school, and all of them had the keys for the A below the staff. Unless the player is very inexperienced, they should be able to play the A fine
Hey! so I was wondering if it'd be alright to use this song for my school's marching show. It's one of the best arrangements I've found and my band already loves it (I've played it nonstop for them.) If so, can my drum line alter the part slightly to make it complex (they like making things harder than they are :/) Great job with this, keep it up!
The only problem is the tenor sax part. Don't five tenor sax any notes below E4. It can go as low as Bb 3, but it's tough for players to hit that low and sounds better in marching band with mid and high range notes.
Yeah. in middle school my bari didn't have the low A key but that was because none of the songs needed them. Now in high school. Every bari as the low A key. It's just the matter of the brand. Most have the key, but very few don't
@Sam Guevara yeah it really wasn't the best ending when I wrote it. I have gotten better at creating endings since, but it's a bit too late to go back and change it.
I really enjoy this arrangement. Did you use Finale? Could you possibly email the finale file? I'd like to slow it down for my middle schoolers, so they could play along. They are really excited about this song.
That part is vocalized by the brass anyways, so I figured it didn't really matter. But sure, to be more like the original piece you could make the last quarter note a step higher.
Well, I could have done both of those ideas, and they would have sounded pretty good in their own way, but I decided to just follow the original piece. This is mostly transcribed note-for-note. To me it sounds better to come in with the small treble section and then bring in the big bad bass.
Oh sorry you meant from the original song. Yeah this version is in F minor, because E minor is just not that fun... especially when you have young marching band members =)
Unfortunately a midi audio version of sheet music isn't going to be interpreted by anyone but a computer, so I apologize if my computer didn't perform the piece like a musician would.
Thanks! Before I arranged this I talked to my bari sax friends in my band and they told me that it could be a potential issue for some instruments, but none at our school. It's an easy fix if the player just wants to take it up an octave.
Also, looks like your bari sax is playing too low. The lowest they can typically go is a Bb below the staff. Some baris are equipped to play the A below it, but that's as far as they'll go.
My band got to choose our own music for our concert and it got down to this Sesame Street and bear necessities
Thank you, this is an honor
This is an amazing band cover, now if only my band director would be open to things like this
Yeah that can be hard to deal with. Just keep bringing it up. Maybe work on a piece on your own and show it to him/her.
yes mine should also, this cover is really nice
im playing this boi :)
Brady Escobar I’m in my high school band and this year my band teacher had us play believer and natural by imagine dragons🙃

From one trombone player to another, I'm glad you enjoy it =) !
This arrangement was just spotttttt on.
love the original song and I find this great

@@purgefam7706 mimicking sound of piano in original recording
I too am in the Mercer Island High School Marching Band. Looking forward to playing the song and thanks Mr. McDermott for the arrangement.
Nice arrangement. One of my favorite songs

It makes me wish we would play songs like this back in my days in high school
Thank man! My high school band is playing this now for pep songs on Fridays.

This is wicked! You have amazing talent and a good career ahead of you!!
Thank you so much, Matthew! This arrangement is amazing!
i love this song and now i can play it on my alto :D thanks a lot!
@yujing zou I got rid of the parts of the song where it was just rap and a stagnant beat. Whenever there was a change in the instrumental I included that in the music. There is enough to the instrumental of Can't Hold Us that it can be played pretty well as a stand tune.

Thank you so much I am probably going to play this with my middle school band.

*Fantástico, Saudações do Brasil*
that is amazing
nicely done! :)
Thank you!
Haha, we played this as our parade tune and a stand tune in marching band, but our version is very different.
I know about that too. It's optional 8va for the bari saxes that don't want to or cant go for it. That little message isn't shown on the screen in this version though since I added it later.
Every time we play this people moonwalk and spin everywhere , its just Awesome , Kinda like when music comes out of nowhere and people begin to dance.
I love it! only thing is, I think there should be an extra measure of silence before 45, then have the low brass come in with that melody, and carry it up the range to trumpets (so like tuba, bari, trombone, horn, then trumpet) with the repeats.

i am actually playing this song, this version this year at school. were the mercer island marching band.
I watched a few videos of your band, you guys definitely seem impressive. Keep it up and let me know how it goes.
Imma post my arrangement of this song as a response
+Mathew Mcdermott I am gonna tell my band director to get this! 1 it's amazing 2 it free this is great keep it up!
My friend abd I love the OG song. She’s not even interested in band and she was jealous I got to play this.
I CAN BARLEY HERE MY INSTRUMENT (well it is flute so um yeah) plus my replay button is broken
Love it!
One of our Saxophone Created this stand tune for our Band :3
Cool. How is your version?
Every time we play this song at the football games everyone goes insane
No Bass Clarinet? Okay. I feel you. It's all good. *sniff sniff*
*wallows in pain*
its okay bro..... *pats back*
Can you not read the clarinet part and play that lower octave?
Psh, I sure can. It's just the fact that they didn't take the time to care for the instrument. Plus, what if the bass clarinet would have to play the bass line instead? No one would know.
RitzyBoon Well to be honest, when I arranged this I honestly didn't give a single thought about the bass clarinet. I still refrain from thinking about them. Sorry, that's just the way it is. Things will never be the same.

I hope so too. Thanks for listening =)
I love it!!!!!!

Only one thing to say....where's the cowbell?!
I actually played cowbell a few weeks ago at one of my school's basketball games. If you're not moving your whole body to play it, you're doing something wrong.
hammer geil .. genau die selben noten hat das Show Orchester wo ich bin auch

Do you have a director's score like in the video available for download?? that would be the BEST!! Love this arrangement!
I'm not sure about the grading system, but I would probably put this at a "Medium" level. It's pretty suitable for high school bands, and maybe some middle school pep bands as well.
I will love you forever Matthew.
Cool.
Awesome, let me know how it goes!

thanks!
Nice
I have taken this as a challenge!
taken what?
Matthew McDermott Hes trying to play the song.
I'm gonna ask my band teacher if we can do this piece for marching band such a good song
Summer Paradise no
My band director arranged a different way but this is cool!
J'adore !!!!
I love
I played bari sax in high school, and all of them had the keys for the A below the staff. Unless the player is very inexperienced, they should be able to play the A fine
Hmmm, we play this song for our halftime show, but the arrangement is vastly different. Alway interesting to see another take on it however.
Yeah I know about that. I dont find it to be that big of a deal, but trumpets can easily write it as a C if they wish
Cool

I used the Garritan instruments pack for Finale.
ah good I'm glad that works. Yeah sorry for writing those low parts. I guess I like honking bari saxes.
The only problem is the tenor sax part. Don't five tenor sax any notes below E4. It can go as low as Bb 3, but it's tough for players to hit that low and sounds better in marching band with mid and high range notes.
I purchased Finale 2012. You can download a trial.
haha that's awesome.

No man, that was amazing
Daniel Santiago Thanks!

Daniel Santiago my school too
Justin Brown kool
this is really good, but can you get a piano sheet music
@superdoopersyd22 mellophone is the French horn part
Victoria West band should play this
Google "Finale Free Trial". It's the 1st link.
You make Marching Bands everywhere look bad.
I really enjoy this arrangement. Did you use Finale? Could you possibly email the finale file? I'd like to slow it down for my middle schoolers, so they could play along. They are really excited about this song.

not bad, any sheet music for party rock by chance
Oh sorry you meant from the original song. Yeah this version is in F minor, because E minor is just not that fun... especially when you have young marching band members =)
The main chorrus, the instruments playin he vocals shouldn't be staccados. It should be slurs with crushendos with decrashendos
wat
Matthew McDermott He means instead of using your tongue, you just play the notes. And to correct, its crescendo and decrescendo.
Something like that, at least.
Edgy Redgy there is no such thing as decrescendo though- it's diminuendo
The Gent and!dhfhf
Unfortunately a midi audio version of sheet music isn't going to be interpreted by anyone but a computer, so I apologize if my computer didn't perform the piece like a musician would.
I mean realistically the balance leads towards them anyways. And was that 30sec brass feature not enough haha?
Finale 2012
that just happens to be what i play
The sheet music is in the video description.
Just a word of advice, most Baritone Saxophones cannot go lower than a B below the staff. Otherwise, nicely done.
Thanks! Before I arranged this I talked to my bari sax friends in my band and they told me that it could be a potential issue for some instruments, but none at our school. It's an easy fix if the player just wants to take it up an octave.
If you go to the dropbox link, there is a PDF of the score that you can download.
And then all the other brass parts can move from a concert C to a Bb on that pitch as well.
Also, looks like your bari sax is playing too low. The lowest they can typically go is a Bb below the staff. Some baris are equipped to play the A below it, but that's as far as they'll go.
