    The years for extremely linear and neutral B&W speakers were the late 70s through the mid-90s. I am still running a vintage pair of Matrix 805s, which measured +/- 1.75 dB from 55 Hz - 18 KHz. The upper mids and treble are detailed and honest, without being forward or hard-sounding. They were some of the first speakers to have the top-mounted, baffleless tweeters. Newer B&W offerings are more resolving, but tend to be more dependent on front-end component quality.

    Very good video Terry. Great detailed explanation of the differences between S2 and S3 series. Allthough I am not a fan of the B&W sound (heard new 801’s but IMO too clean and too tight, lacks natural patterns) the finish is amazing. Great to see that new Philips TV with B&W. P.s.: noticed that speakers during demo are more then a meter away from the walls. I always wonder how many buyers can achieve that at home…

    Thank you for this impressive review and discussion on 700 Series 3. Is it me or maybe Bowers & Wilkins 700 Series 2 was a speaker line ahead of its time value, quality and aesthetics especially the 706 for families with children. I love the new federated tweeter on top size and form. My thinking is that this 700 Series art and science is based on investment in design Bowers & Wilkins made decade ago through the Nautilus speaker design technology and the 800 series.
    That new center speaker with tweeter sitting above just looks amazing. The 706 S2 are being heavily discounted.

    • @techsamurai11
      @techsamurai11 2 года назад

      Yeah, all of this came from the Nautilus 800 and trickled down to the 700 series. I'd love to hear these against my very old 703s. It's something I wish B&W would do (record the new model against the last 2 models) as it's really otherwise impossible to compare and I'm not replacing my maple speakers and forking over $20,000 for a new system just to do some testing. It's a bit expensive to test and a bit of a pain in the posterior to replace all my speakers to see if this one is significantly better.

      I’m not so sure about that,
      Personally I think the jump from the CM series to the 700s2 series was much more substantial than this new s3 line.
      Sure they look nice but they have become so expensive and I’m sure most people can’t justify this extra price increase for a slight incremental improvement.

    I am oh so psyched to see these new offerings from Bowers & Wilkins. I have been mulling over buying a pair of 702 Signatures for about a year now, but have held off. I am so glad that I waited. The new 702 S3 looks amazing and the new technology is wonderful. Plus the new Mocha finish will be a whole lot easier to keep looking good than the 702 Signatures Datuk gloss. The fact that they come in at 8,999 dollars a pair Canadian is a real bonus. I will still be waiting for a bit to allow these new offerings to get around to the various reviewers to get their take on them for build and sound quality. At this point I will most likely buy a set of 702 S3's in the spring next year. Until then I will be dreaming and waiting patiently for my new speakers. By the way they will be replacing my current Monitor Audio Silver 10 speakers which I have had in my system since 2014. This will be a tremendous "upgrade" in sound for me and I intend the new 702 S3's to be my final loudspeaker purchase.

      I recently purchased some 607 S2 Annos along with a bevy of others - KEF, Fluance, Polk R200 (which might be my favorite overall) - and I’ve been blown away by how much better the 607 sounds in my space compared to all the rest save for the R200… which is still close. The B&W is definitely brighter, but I appreciate the energetics.
      I tend to find a lot of people hate B&W for whatever absurd reasons, but having listened to hundreds of speakers in studio and non-studio settings, I often find them among the best in their respective ranges… but I also find their coloration enjoyable rather than the sterility of supposedly-flat measuring speakers.

    • @chebrubin

      Look closely. Seems they had 2 Rotel michi bi amped. You need power amplifiers with B&W, no receiver will cut it.

    • @PursuitPerfectSystem
      @PursuitPerfectSystem  2 года назад

      Yeah thats the same system they demo the big 800s on so its more for them than the 700s and Bowers said moving the MICHI was worth the hassle as they are insane heavy but of course you dont need that much amplifier for them.

    • @techsamurai11

      @@chebrubin is it bi-amped or mono block? It's hard to tell if it's S5 or M8.

    • @techsamurai11
      @techsamurai11 2 года назад

      @@PursuitPerfectSystem apparently, the B&W are false 8 ohm like just about every other speaker out there. They need power. They prefer bi-amp as the impedance fluctuates. There’s a reason for the Michis there. You don’t need to go that high but get 600 watts into 4 channels or minimum 150-200 into 2 channels.
      I was auditioning the 702 S2 at Best Buy and we went through all the expensive AVRs and separates - the audition lasted 5 minutes. They needed to be bi-amped as I do with my old 703 (made in the UK). Andrew Robinson had the same issue with the 702 signature and needed to pull out the kilowatt. If you go low in the 100-150, you need bi-amping so the speaker can breathe.

    • @PursuitPerfectSystem
      @PursuitPerfectSystem  2 года назад

      To be fair power amps are better on all speakers, I have seen people use Arcam AVR850 on the 702 S2 with great results and other people with NAD M33 again with great results. I think if you box clever with how you set things up you dont need KW of amplifier for these speakers. I could get great results from the 702 s2 with a NAD M10 V2 I think I could no problem

  • @techsamurai11
    @techsamurai11 2 года назад +1

    By the way, have companies always shown the drivers and crossover electronics inside speakers? It's common for amps to see the insides but not so much for speakers. I loved that B&W did that.
    I wish they recorded a demo for everyone out there to hear the difference between the old series and the new one especially since most folks can't demo these at stores anymore. This is a missed opportunity.

    Wow, the 7 series is going up in price topping at $7,000 with the tiniest one costing $1,800.
    Affordable speakers have been closing the gap in performance to B&W with speakers from Polk, Sonus Faber, Q Acoustics, and Arendal offering extremely good lines.
    A 5.0 would cost 13,700 without tax, cables, and power.
    702 S3 $7,000
    HT7M1 S3 $2,500 (center)
    705 S3 $3,400

    Dropping to the 703S3 and 706S3, you save 2,200 which is really just 10% of the system. For $18k, I'd expect the best in the 700 series.

      I don't think the mesh makes a difference. The old 703 had a removable cover and the reviewers found very little difference with the cover on and off so they measured it with the cover on. The measured the other drivers with the grille off but also commented that it didn't change the frequency response.

      Sealed will get you less bass and more distortion earlier, b&w has never been sealed as long as i have known about the brand unless you are talking about their subs, the protection on tweeter is good thing, as they are so many speakers with dented tweeters

    Back in 2001 I had a pair of B&W 603 S2 floorstanding speakers. They were then made in the UK. About 15 years later I bought a pair of 683 S2 which were really shoddy in terms of their construction. Scratches on the plastic baffle and glue showing in the joints. This when they had moved production to China. I switched to Monitor Audio and never looked back. Their construction and attention to detail and QC seem to be of a much higher standard. I dont think I would buy B&W again. A shame since sonically they were great

    Horrible Horrible speakers, try listening to Linkin park or any High Base Rap songs on them horrible. Purposely makes the vocals tooo sharp and mid base so insignificant. I deeply regret buying them.
