I did this hike 40 years ago at Paradise on the Nisqually glacier. I don’t remember any dirt trail. I thought it was really difficult due to the elevation. Your video gave me great memories. I worked at Ohananpecosh at the visitor center. Thanks. Joyce 😊
Some awesome footage of the hike! A word of caution, though: while this hike isn't technical, it actually CAN be very dangerous! Whiteout conditions can move in very quickly, and once off the skyline trail, it is *very* easy to get lost and wander onto the Nisqually glacier, off some cliffs, or die of hypothermia. On a beautiful day, this seems like an "easy" hike (from a technical perspective). But excellent navigational skills and bearings/coordinates for getting off of the Muir snowfield is a must for any hiker.
Excellent video. You really captured what it's like to hike to Camp Muir. It's a lot harder than I thought it was. We might try it next summer. Did you use micro spikes or crampons? Thanks.
Paradise is the lodge and large parking lot. There are a number of trail heads, but I believe Skyline is the main trail that gets you up to Pebble Creek, which is the creek you cross and climb up onto the Muir snow field.
Great question! We did the hike with a number of people who had done it before, but not an official guide. There is no need for a guide as the trail starts in the parking lot at the Paradise lodge, and is extremely well defined. Even after crossing Pebble Creek and getting on the Muir snowfield the trail is defined by flags, but really you just follow the boot track (and the people in front of you) as the trail is quite popular. Glisading on the way down follows the boot track trail, but off to the right side. I hope you get to do this hike, it is memorable!
Happy Path Travel thank you so much for getting back to me on this. I’m shooting for July/August 2021 for this. Hopefully get to come back and update you on how it went
Very nice! Planning to be there in July. What was the month did you go to? Would be nice if you had more views from the camp! Do you think at the end of July there will be still lots of snow to sled down?
It was the middle of July is when we went. The Muir snowfield has snow on it year round. It is just a gorgeous hike! The camp area is pretty rustic with the stone huts. There were small tents for those planning to summit. We were pretty tired when reaching the camp. We were very grateful to find a couple of restrooms up there. It definitely gets chilly when you are at camp and stop hiking for a bit so bring a puff jacket to stay warm. Bring slick rain pants and you will glissade down faster. Enjoy a glorious place to be.
Caution! When you make the hike from Paradise to Camp Muir it seems like you are going in a straight line, but actually it is a curve. Should you get in a white-out on the return you can get very confused and lost.
That’s a good point! Storms can move in quick at that elevation. We always download the trail map from AllTrails. Even at that elevation, above the cell towers, we can see our position relative to the trail using the phone’s GPS capability. Top tip - start the hike with a full battery on your cell phone! :)
Thanks for your comment and glad you liked it. We were hiking with the slower group and started at 10:00am and finished at 7:00pm. We spent close to an hour at the top soaking in the views and taking a needed break. Others did the hike probably 2 hours faster than us so it can depend.
No crampons, but we did use Yak Tracks when we were on the Muir snow field. Their wasn’t any place on this hike that was steep enough to make me feel uncomfortable.
No we took the trail all the way up to Camp Muir. The Skyline Trail takes off from the lower part of the hike to Camp Muir but we didn't go that route. It would be a good hike to do though.
When you hike from Paradise to Camp Muir it seems like you are going in a straight line. You are actually going on a big curve. Thus, it is easy to get lost if you are trying to descend in a white-out. Be careful not to walk off of a cornice.
I enjoy your video; thanks for sharing!
Thank you for posting this. The constant footage and commentary REALLY gave me a great idea of what to expect in terms of conditions. Nice video.
We’re so glad that you liked it. Thank you for the positive comment!

this looks like fun
Thanks for watching!
Nice video. I learned glaciading today. Fun! But such a long hike. It’s nice you have a Guide.
Thanks, yes I agree that having someone with you who’s done the hike before is nice.

Thanks for the comment, and I completely agree. Weather is the game changer at this altitude.
I did it back in 80. Great video!
We really enjoy the Rainier hike, and hope to do it again.
Thanks very informative!! Great views
Thanks for watching!

Thanks, it was a real work out, but completely worth it! We used Yak Tracks on the snow field and had no problems with our footing.
Great video! Is paradise the same as skyline trail?
Paradise is the lodge and large parking lot. There are a number of trail heads, but I believe Skyline is the main trail that gets you up to Pebble Creek, which is the creek you cross and climb up onto the Muir snow field.
@@happypathtravel8135 Thank you!
Where did u find the guilde? I love to make that trip but don’t want to do it alone…..,any suggestions?
We were fortunate to have friends who have done this hike many times. I believe that you can find guided trips however.
Thank you for posting this m. It’s a great guide. Can it be done without a guide? Is it easy to get lost?

We can’t wait to hear about your experience!

Great video. Do you have to buy any day passes up to Camp Muir?
Great question, no permits needed and a big parking lot at Paradise Lodge with free parking.
Nice video! What time of year did you do this hike?
Thanks, it was a fun hike. We did this hike in mid-July.
Great stuff! How long did it take to get to camp muir?
Thanks for your comment and glad you liked it. We were hiking with the slower group and started at 10:00am and finished at 7:00pm. We spent close to an hour at the top soaking in the views and taking a needed break. Others did the hike probably 2 hours faster than us so it can depend.
is this doable without poles?
Poles and Yak Tracks will make your time on the Muir Snow field much easier. I always appreciate having the poles on the trek down as well.
Is this the route they used to race down in the 30 ’s ?
Sorry I missed this. Not sure about racing on Mt. Rainier. Sure would be a lot of fun!
Hi! Awesome video, did you guys use crampons or micro spikes?
No crampons, but we did use Yak Tracks when we were on the Muir snow field. Their wasn’t any place on this hike that was steep enough to make me feel uncomfortable.
Great video, and beautiful views, I am planning to do it this summer too to the summit I hope!!!
Was this the skyline trail? Great video!!
No we took the trail all the way up to Camp Muir. The Skyline Trail takes off from the lower part of the hike to Camp Muir but we didn't go that route. It would be a good hike to do though.
sorry about your wedding this year great video though
Thanks!

So true! Weather changes everything on the mountain.
Horrible audio ruin the whole thing you guys need the mic up!
Yes we agree! You have a good ear David. We are still working at it and learning as we go. Thank you!
