Paddle boarding with our Golden Retriever
#Paddleboarding #GoldenRetriever #Camping Join Happy Path Travel as we teach our young golden retriever to paddleboard with us on the water. We take on this fun adventure over several campsites in the northwest. We watch Gracie’s confidence in the water and on the paddle board continue to grow. We visit a number of locations including Lincoln Rock State Park in Washington, Two Rivers Campground in Washington, Luby Bay at Priest Lake, Idaho, Huckleberry campground in Idaho and Lake Pend Oreille at Springy Point Campground in Washington. Gracie certainly doesn’t achieve perfect behavior on the paddle board, but we have lots of fun trying to teach her while we learn paddle boarding as well. ...

Did Siyeh Pass two weeks ago. It was glorious! At the very top there is a huge rock cairn so you almost got to the highest point. Several marmot played King of the World on top of the rock cairn. We continued over the pass and met 5 grizzlies on the way down to Sunrift Gorge! Keep that bear spray out and accessible. Worth every step of the way!

I would say that 98% is an easy hike. When you get to within 200 feet or so of the summit you have a choice of two routes. Straight across the scree field and then a short scramble onto the summit, or to the left which is more steep and then a scramble onto the ridge, and from there a walk up to the summit. I believe the ridge route is the preferred route. If you turn around as we did before the scrambling, the hike is still completely worth it because of the amazing views.

where you were standing, at the far end of Avalanche lake, is where i put my parents ashes. Heaven's peak is over your shoulder on the left. seemed an appropriate place. i've been there dozens and dozens of times. my parents hiked in with me in the late 80's and loved the waterfalls at the far end of the lake. i miss the park. spent 35+ years hiking, climbing, biking, rafting, camping and fishing. put well over 3000 miles on trails, summited peaks over 100 times, spent dozens and dozens of nights camping in the backcountry (slept under the stars on many clear nights), biked to Logan pass before road opening another dozen times. but, then it went crazy. around 2000, the crowds arrived to Flathead valley. it was manageable until 2010, then it became untenable. TOO MANY PEOPLE!! and not kind people. terrible people. arrogant, snobby, rude people. the kindness i'd experienced for nearly 30 years disappeared. i never thought i would leave the Flathead and Glacier, but i just couldn't take the attitudes of the newly arrived. it's different. and not in good way. i live in the Andes now. the Ecuadorian people are the kindest, most honest and loving people i've ever met. the country has beauty from the ocean to the amazon, from the volcanoes in the north, to the 'eternal spring' mountain climate in the south. i will never return to the U.S. i will miss Glacier Park....but not the people. i won't miss the people. at all...

Some awesome footage of the hike! A word of caution, though: while this hike isn't technical, it actually CAN be very dangerous! Whiteout conditions can move in very quickly, and once off the skyline trail, it is *very* easy to get lost and wander onto the Nisqually glacier, off some cliffs, or die of hypothermia. On a beautiful day, this seems like an "easy" hike (from a technical perspective). But excellent navigational skills and bearings/coordinates for getting off of the Muir snowfield is a must for any hiker.

There were small tents for those planning to summit. We were pretty tired when reaching the camp. We were very grateful to find a couple of restrooms up there. It definitely gets chilly when you are at camp and stop hiking for a bit so bring a puff jacket to stay warm. Bring slick rain pants and you will glissade down faster. Enjoy a glorious place to be.

Caution! When you make the hike from Paradise to Camp Muir it seems like you are going in a straight line, but actually it is a curve. Should you get in a white-out on the return you can get very confused and lost.

That’s a good point! Storms can move in quick at that elevation. We always download the trail map from AllTrails. Even at that elevation, above the cell towers, we can see our position relative to the trail using the phone’s GPS capability. Top tip - start the hike with a full battery on your cell phone! :)

Nice editing job with this video. I found myself unconsciously rubbing on sun block as I watched.

Great question, no permits needed and a big parking lot at Paradise Lodge with free parking.

Thanks for your comment and glad you liked it. We were hiking with the slower group and started at 10:00am and finished at 7:00pm. We spent close to an hour at the top soaking in the views and taking a needed break. Others did the hike probably 2 hours faster than us so it can depend.

I did this hike 40 years ago at Paradise on the Nisqually glacier. I don’t remember any dirt trail. I thought it was really difficult due to the elevation. Your video gave me great memories. I worked at Ohananpecosh at the visitor center. Thanks. Joyce 😊

Thank you for posting this m. It’s a great guide. Can it be done without a guide? Is it easy to get lost?

Great question! We did the hike with a number of people who had done it before, but not an official guide. There is no need for a guide as the trail starts in the parking lot at the Paradise lodge, and is extremely well defined. Even after crossing Pebble Creek and getting on the Muir snowfield the trail is defined by flags, but really you just follow the boot track (and the people in front of you) as the trail is quite popular. Glisading on the way down follows the boot track trail, but off to the right side. I hope you get to do this hike, it is memorable!
