He is one of the world's best guitarists - and he doesn't read music! The instrument is just part of him. Truly talented - a master musician who is an entertainer as well. How much practice and application does it take to be as good as him?
I'm happy that you've discovered Tommy. Tommy and his brother, Phil..both incredible on the guitar..both cannot read music..and that's a fact . taught themselves. influenced by their mum and dad..who were musicians
Aussie here. I grew up listening to Tommy Emmanuel, who began playing guitar in rural Australia as a young kid. He can play pretty much any style, electric or acoustic, and as a young muso, he played in a range of bands, and backed some well known singers. His main style nowadays is fingerpicking on an Australian made Maton acoustic guitar. He worked with Chet Atkins before he died, and together they made an album worth listening to called "The Day Fingerpickers Took Over The World". I have seen him at least five times. If you go back to the video and look closely at the body of his guitar, it appears to be in bad condition. That's because he deliberately rubs off the finish on the guitar in several spots, which exposes the raw wood underneath. The strums on that wood to get a Brrrrrrt sound like on a washboard. When he's in full flight, he plays guitar, uses his palm to smack on the guitar to get a percussive sound, strums the bare wood and gets the most amazing sounds. Listen to "Initiation" He has a seven-fret stretch and has been known to practice 14 hours a day. He's also known as "One Take Tommy" because when he's recording he rarely has to do more takes. He's the best acoustic guitarist on the planet.
This performance wasn’t just Classical Gas, if you listen carefully he goes into Walk don’t Run and then Eltons’ Saturday nights alright for fighting and then back to Classical Gas.
He does a version of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" for, and in front of, the late, and legendary guitarist, Les Paul, that you simply MUST see/hear!..It will blow your socks off!..It was Les Paul's favorite song.
A must is to listen and see his own composition named 'Initiation'. It is, and he is, brilliant !!!
That guitar deserves a medal for service above and beyond. ••• Thanks! PEACE!!!
The comment about it being like a 1 man band is spot on ❤. Tommy said this in his TedTalk a few years ago. Tommy has been playing since he was 4 & he really is a master based on how other guitar players talk about him. He does not just focus on a guitar piece but also other instruments played in a piece including the vocals. He also seems obsessed mastering songs by the Beatles & they sound amazing.
Still think my favourite ones are when he played with his brother Phil Emmanuel, who sadly died in 2018. Still amazed when they play the same guitar together.
Tommy played with John Farnhams band for a while. They are evidently great mates.
I love your reactions! You are both so honest and real and smart. You react to how the music makes you feel, which is why people want to watch reaction videos. Here's a solid gold recommendation for you, another one by Tommy Emmanuel: Somewhere Over The Rainbow (2006 Live in Leverkusen). Where this performance was frantic and stunning, his version of SOTR is just nonstop gorgeous, lyrical loveliness. You won't believe a guitar can convey so much emotion!
The amazing thing is he is so massively talented and yet still so nice and humble. People will bring their guitars to his shows for him to sign and he will often play with them after the show if he has time. You can find heaps of videos of him interacting with fans and he is always down to earth. There's even a video of him casually chatting to a fan while he tunes their guitar for them.
I agree that this is an exposition of human talent developed to an almost supernatural level.
I have always loved this instrumental song by Mason Williams. Such cool vibes. I had also heard Tommy Emmanuel's version & he does a really nice job of this song. Both are masters of their craft.
You should watch and listen to Tommy performing "Initiation" ...
Check out the song initation ... Live . Also he and his brother were legends when they played together. Check them out.
Try his song Initiation The effects he gets out of his guitar are amazing
That's out of this world!
Yes, one man, one guitar and he recreates a million sq km of empty night time desert and breeze that only Aboriginals know, understand and use for their secret initiation ceremonies. It is genius.
One of the GOATS! Amazing guitarist. Looking forward to this one. :)
You two are so cute and entertaining. I'm seeing Tommy live in October!!!
The Journey (guitar only) will also stun you.
Tommy has so much that you will LOVE..
First time I saw Tommy was around 30 years ago, and I was stunned by his ability to extract every note out of such an instrument and with such ease. 👍🤗
I'm lucky enough to been to several concerts of him. Apart from being a brilliant guitar player he's also e very entertaining performer.
He's just unique.
The word “virtuoso” comes to mind
Great Artist! Great Track! Great Reaction!!!! Thank You so Much ✌
The expressions on your faces 😅 👍
you must do tommy version of somewhere over the rainbow...astounding
Although Tommy and his brother learned by listening to and copying Country Music, I think this version of Classical Gas has a Spanish Guitar flavour to it. I too recommend Initition, the longer version performed in dark blue lighting, mimicking the night time in which Aboriginal Australian’s hold initiation ceremonies for boys to become men.
There are all kinds of acoustic player; flatpickers, finger style but if you want to talk about finger style then there are maybe 3 at the very top. Chet, Jerry Reed and Tommy.
Hi guys, I'm hoping with all my heart that I will be successful in my seemingly futile attempt to get at least "ONE" of my favourite reactors to watch/listen to this amazing piece of "looping" work by Australian singer/songwriter Tash Sultana and her song -- "JUNGLE__LIVE BEDROOM RECORDING" -- (it's actually in her living room so I don't understand the given title, but hey ho, c'est la vie, n'est pas!?). Much love from Scotland💓💓💓💓
Tommy is wane off the best gitaar player of the world, hy still travel ovr the hole world white hise gitaar, gives hime a elektronische gitaar and hy rock, play bluesrock hardrock ,pays a lote off bands, loke interviews white hime ❤❤❤
watch kasey chambers also from australia ,singing lose yourself by eminen
I started playing guitar during Covid, in my late forties. It's never too late.
God gave you "ANDREI", and he gave him "YOU", what more could you possibly want. You are both extremely lucky to have found one another, you are so obviously head over heels in love with one another💞💞.
Magical. 😊 Who needs lyrics?
I learned to play Atkins' version but then I heard Tommy Emmanuel and gave up...
He's only the best acoustic guitar player in history. I've seen him in concert twice, both times with Molly Tuttle. Unbelievable experience.
Loved your reactions guys. If you want to do a follow up on Tommy's amazing talent... His performance of 'Initiation' is the story of an 'Indigenous Corroboree' set in the Australian outback. You will hear thunder storms, rain, birds, and the stomping of feet from the indigenous dancers. A didgeridoo (long musical instrument) and so many more sounds all created on his guitar. His performance is mind blowing. ruclips.net/video/mqhYIe9sunA/видео.html
Dominika, You are a beautiful person. That is your gift to the world. Andre will back me up on that! ☺✌💛, PJ
Thank you 😊
I am soooooo looking forward to seeing you react to the Pink Floyd song Echoes. Please do the David Gilmour Live in Gdansk version!
I think the lady here captures it well: he plays with his whole body.
Tommy is a great guitarist, I follow him a long time ago.
Tommy is the guy that, artists who have sold over a hundred million albums… go to for guitar lessons lol literally a living legend 👏👏👏
Ypu guys are so cute
The original score is far superior . This is just showing off talent costing the beauty of the music itself. The original is with full orchestra. A beautiful tune .
no idea what this is but I like you guys so let's go....let's do it!
As a guitarist, the lovely Tommy scares me.
Amen Tommy 🤘🇦🇺🔥!
He grew up copying songs from radio with knowing they used more than one guitar, so played bass at same time as rhythm.
I have just one question for Andrei.
Any chance you can tell me where Tommy is from?
Take your time 😏

Tommy and Jimmy Barnes back in 1993 together. This one is live to a small audience for tv. The album feels cleaner.
Jimmy's kids can be spotted sitting nearby.😊
Absolutely 👍
I’ve had the honor to see Tommy play live 5 times. He amazes me every time.
Another player that is next level is Luca Stricagnoli.
I would start with his rendition of Sweet Child of Mine. Be prepared to have your minds blown. I’ve also seen him live (and met him) and he sounds EXACTLY as good live as in his videos. Amazing. Here’s a link. Once you go down the Luca rabbit hole, it’s hard to stop!

He put quite a bit of pyrotechnics into his version of it but I prefer the mason Williams version which one it first came out at the pop charts for a while I’m supposing that was about in 1964 or five or 67 I don’t remember quite but I was absolutely fiberglass by this piece for an instrumental hip pop charts it’s quite unusual Mason Williams was gifted man
Reinhard Mey & Freunde - Nein, meine Söhne geb' ich nicht.
How do you know how to do all those notes like that? easy 1,000`s of hours of practice.
That guitar is pregnant now.
Actually: He is an alien from outta space! But nobody needs to know! Well, at least in my opinion! I am playing my guitars 25+ years and I still haven't figured out, how to play my strings like that! ^^+gg XD I meet him and asked him ... very nice guy ... but still ... I have no clue! Damn! :-( He's like the master or final boss you have to beat at the end of a video game - level: hard! ^^+gg
Check out Joscho Stephan, he has a few vids with Tommy and deserves much more attention he is one of the best around today
Funny you should say "one man band
Rolling Stone omitted Tommy from it's top 250 of all time. Explain that one!
Who are these people
you have never seen anyone play a guitar like this
Luca Stricagnoli - FEEL GOOD INC. (Gorillaz)
Luca (Italian guitar player) plays a triple neck guitar, and in the performance he plays, leader guitar, bass guitar, drums, and vocals, all with the guitar, at the same time, no looping.
Its IMO the best guitar player you will see
suggest watching the original off screen just to be sure you know the song. Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc.
I don't think you've picked up the details in this performance. Tommy is playing the melodic, rhythmic and bass sections of this piece all on the one guitar. Luca had to use a 3 head guitar to do it. Look at Tommy's fingers, it more like piano playing than guitar. Look into his technique.
Since you enjoyed that so much, try some more Flamenco guitar talent by Paco De Lucia, Al Di Meola, and John McLaughlin: ruclips.net/video/ADwfyxpriAM/видео.html
Just need to say this-you should watch or at least listen to the original by Mason Williams. As far as guitar players go, it is quite a hard song to master, but what Tommy does to it is nothing short of brilliant.
Oh, If you don't know much about Tommy, he's older than you and you need to learn more.
This man is a great guitar player but all the fancy licks to me loses the melody of the song. I like Mason Williams version.
So true..........but when Tommy is NOT lecturing guitar students all around the world , he is doing 2 hour concerts by himself..... just his guitars, amps, and he sometimes sings.
No one is going to listen to anyone else play guitar for 2 hours, by themself.
He learnt to play by listening to Chet Atkins on the radio ......but he thought Chet was playing by himself...... so Tommy learnt to play the percussion , bass, rhythm and leed all at the same time.
His professional career started at 6 yo, then a little later his father took Tommy and older brother Phil out of school , sold the family home, and the family toured country NSW in 2 station wagons playing gigs anywhere they could find an audience.
When their dad died in about 1966, an Australian musician took over and kept the family together and working........until the government caught up with them and made the 2 brothers no back to school. lol
Tommy is firstly an act for other guitarists, then other musicians, and then those that can’t play but appreciate unique talent.
When he met Chet Atkins and played for him as well as with him, Chet was so impressed he parented the very young Tommy with a plaque..... Certified Guitar Player......apparently Chet only ever patented about 4 of these to the 4 players that amazed him .
Tommy does do music with other musicians, but his own act is about what can be done with an accoustic guitar and not so much ...... listen to this and make me a POP star. lol
This was a total mash up and ruined the original flavour of the song in my opinion as a classical guitar musician.
