Yngwie, one of my favourite guitarists as a teenager. Random question: what do Malaysian guitarists think of Brian May? And are Queen popular within the rock kapak fan/crowd? Are Queen an influence to rock kapak?
Thanks for the insights, brother. You make a good point here. Brian May & Queen...👍👍 I believe there must be some influence from them in Malaysian rock music to a certain degree.
I read somewhere that Queen was popular in Malaysia but only in the 1970s. But then again Dewa 19 came to Malaysia performing some Queen songs which sparked a Queen revival in Malaysia. Is it possible if you could do a video on how Queen influenced Malaysian rock one day?
Neo Classical Rock is the main theme of the 80's - 90's, and Malaysia really adopted the theme into their music scene. Well, the sentimental side of it, for the most part. And they had been rewarded with the birth of Malaysian legends such as IKLIM, EXIST, SEARCH ect. Unfortunately Malaysian still stuck in those era and hasn't evolve properly till now.
Kinda true. As the majority, including myself, are used to the neo-classical note progression, we tend to love the harmonic minor rather than exploring the new fusion movement and incorporating it into modern musical arrangements..
Antara gitaris antarabangsa terawal yang saya discover. Membesar di era kegemilangannya, setiap hari pergi ke rumah jiran, tumpang dengar kaset Rising Force sampai lunyai inlay. Melodi lagu-lagunya aduhai, menusuk. Walaupun lick diulang-ulang, tapi phrasingnya tu, memang menangkap.

3 points yang interesting brother. Ya, cara permainan Yngwie mungkin tidak complicated bagi sesetengah musician. Senang di dengar, bunyi note dia tekan tu clean "seketul-seketul" bak kata kawan saya. Haha mungkin faktor utama cara beliau senang dan mudah di ikuti (susah juga sebenarnya kalau tak ikut the right speed and tempo plus the right tone and technique) haha
Im start knowing about yngwie malmsteen because one cd album. "Facing the animal". Banyak la lagu lagu best yngwie dalam tu. Macam sacrifice, like an angel, dan facing the animal. Rumor said yngwie fast play was epic lah. Sampai ada jolokan "the hands of ferrari. In my opinion kalau nak sehampir sama bab kelajuan shredding, tetap memilih tok man keedal from left-handed. Dia pun dapat jolokan "malmsteen Malaya". Gitar fender dia neck nya pun macam fender yngwie jugak, neck jenis scallop.❤ Fun fact: sebenarnya permainan "fast shredding" yngwie ni dia banyak ambik influance dari violist. Macam Vivaldi. Dan banyak classical song yang lain.
Hi Yukushi. Aha, nice album facing the animal tu. Mcm solo lagu like an angel, memang sedap ada bau-bauan melody lagu rock tempatan kita. Tapi solo Yngwie memang berhantu.haha And yes, he played fast, but Im sure others are slightly faster than him i.e., Michael Angelo Batio. However, based on my observation, when it comes to sound, Yngwie's playing still appears to sound fast. I believe it is because of his right hand picking precision. Note tu sebijik-sebijik keluar bunyi bulat nya.
I think Malaysians love to copy Yngwie rather than adopting neo-classical itself. You don't have to sound like Malmsteen if you love to play neo-classical. Some notable neo-classical players who don't play and sound like Malmsteen are Uli Jon Roth and Michael Romeo. But there are also players who play close to what Yngwie does in terms of phrasing and selection of notes like Joe Stump but still, some differences can be spotted. I think neo-classical pretty much depends on your influence as well. Tony MacAlpine is heavily influenced by Chopin and Liszt while Yngwie adores Paganini. That creates two different products altogether. But holistically this genre incorporates harmonic minor and phrygian modes so in a way, no matter who your classical idol is, the musical structure sounds kind of similar, to a certain extent. If someone asks me of any Malaysians who really play neo-classical (not Yngwie), I'll name Shahrul Ekamatra for his own identity attainment. You can sense some Yngwie-ish flavour and few Jason Becker-oriented approaches in his compositions but that's all standard neo-classical essence, if we really understand it all well. Songs like Dunia ke III, Ekamatra, Ego are good examples of how he doesn't actually clones Yngwie 100% but also injects his own style.
@@chezhu6550 Right. Transfigurasi is a purely mature album with more elements blended together. That's why I never see him as Yngwie's impersonator like what some people claim.
@@foxns7 Hi brother, first of all, thank you so much for your amazing long comments. I love and appreciate them so much! And yes, this video is intended for discussion here on RUclips, as it has been a hot topic when I sit with my buddies and talk about Yngwie's impersonators/influence in Malaysia, including myself, lol. I totally agree with you when you said that in the neoclassical genre, structurally (phrygian modes, Harmonic minor, etc.), most of the neo-classical sounds are similar. Not to mention all the guitarists like Tony MacApline, Shahrul, etc. Well, here's my takeaway from years of listening to Malmsteen. He has a very unique approach when applying all those modes in neoclassical music. His tone on each note he picks is very clean, the level of accuracy allows you to hear each note he plays clearly without the addition of many space-like floating sound effects, and most importantly, his timing. One of his obvious trademarks is that he plays cleanly but completes the notes/scales earlier than the allocated bars. However, he still stays within the beauty of the musical context. Sometimes, he delays and finishes the scales behind the allocated bars, but it's still 'correct' and musically brilliant. I think he is a genius in that sense. Maybe, I, myself was drawn to that ability and unknowingly trying to imitate his playing style Hahaha

I used to like Yngwie. But after a while I got tired of him as he gets repetitive. Blackmore changed his style in late 1990s to mediaeval which makes me still a fan of him. I still respect Yngwie though. But I never ever play like him even if I could by more practices. I am more towards blues, country music and Celtic. I like under-rated guitarists whose strength is in their songs, e.g., Richard Thompson and Mark Knopfler. Unique and distinct and their guitar styles can be used across genres. I must include Steve Howe, a versatile progressive rock player who played the wandering minstrel solo on Queen's epic 1991 Innuendo. I should add Hank Marvin, Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck. So I am not that typical Yngwie-influenced player.
