  • In today's video we're going to be talking about perspective, but maybe not in the way you normally think. There's actually different kinds of perspective, and it all effects the way you paint or sketch. Today we're going to talk about the interplay between linear and arial or atmospheric perspective and how using them in your paintings can add depth and help you make sense of the scene you're trying to paint. Today we're plein air painting/urban sketching with gouache and we'll explore the benefits of thinking about atmospheric perspective first!
If you're new here my name is Danny Sabra. I am a self taught artist. I do a lot of #oilpainting, #pleinairpainting, #gouache and #watercolor painting, urban sketching, #penandink drawing and many other things! I upload tips on #paintingforbeginners and other subjects related to art and creativity. I like to do #landscapepainting, plein air, alla prima, as well as portraits of people and animal portraits. I believe every person has a creative voice that matters. and my goal is to empower everyone to share their creativity with the world! That demonstration in building distances with simplified values was helpful, thank you,

Great breakdown of atmospheric perspective Danny. I’m often tempted to over-paint and put too much detail throughout a landscape, so your tip of ‘breaking down the scene in layers,’ is very helpful.

Thanks Samantha! I have that same temptation too! Sometimes the differences between different layers is subtle and I'm tempted to make a distant layer of scene too dark which always messes things up! haha. I had that happen yesterday in fact. I think this is one of those things where you have to paint with a combination of what you see and what you know.

Atmospheric perspective is very hard to do here in Colorado as there's not always a lot of moisture/particulates in our thin mountain air; so one has to tweak reality a little in order to create depth. Thanks for the reminder. :)

That’s interesting Laura! I’m sure every climate and locale has differences with this. Observation is key! Thanks for sharing!
