I have two problems with how Jagex handled asking about introducing a new skill. 1. They said they would flesh out some ideas for all 3 skill options they gave regardless of the poll results. This didn't happen, they gave a very basic description for all 3 and then said. "Sailling won, here is how sailing would look like" and ignored the promise to show what the other two skills could have been. 2. They promised to poll again if it was close. Sailing didn't win by a large majority. They didn't repoll like they said they would. This entire situation feels like they forced sailing down our throats and they already decided it would be sailing before any polls even happened. And then everything about sailing so far just screams minigame. It does not feel like a skill. And before anyone says "slayer is like a minigame" yeah and it probably shouldn't be a skill either to be honest. But unlike sailing, slayer has been in the game a long time and gets to sit in its legacy slot. Sailing can go back to minigame status.

Haters hating on sailing because there's a massive game engine overhaul that needs to happen before they can fully flesh it out, and people look at a very early alpha and are dissatisfied it's not everything they promised yet?? The amount of effort they are putting into manipulating the codebase just to get the movement to function will probably be 50% - 60% of the work. Be grateful they've put work into something demonstrative at all instead of leaving us in the dark for a year while they do the boring and laborious stuff no one cares about. Sailing could be the best and most freeing skill in runescape, with infinite potential and consistent landmass expansions, not to mention all of the really cool stuff they have already talked about implementing, but ya'll are too busy nitpicking a MOVEMENT alpha to recognize the amount of true labor something like this needs to be actualized. You would think this community of all of them would appreciate the effort they are going through, and every incremental hurtle they overcome in the hopes that they can bring their amazing vision to life. Maybe Behemeth just has a knack for focusing on negativity, but it seems to me that the community is just impatient and ungrateful, and that is super disappointing.
They’re trained to be impatient. Instant teleports. Drop rates. Mini games for skills to speed up grinds and experience rates because casuals want to just “hop on and play the game”. I’ve had hardcore ironmen actually say to me they want to wait to do mid tier content, with end game gear and stats because it’s “BiS” so therefore kills per hour. Ignoring the fact you just need to kill it. How fast is irrelevant. You don’t get trophies for speed running dangerous content. People don’t think beyond their noses anymore. It’s quite funny to watch.
Ngl I'm a huge believer that new skills are vital for the future of OSRS and I believed Sailing is gonna be an amazing skill. However from what it's shown so far it's nothing what i envisioned sailing to be, it almost feels like a mini game you would play back in the days as a kid for an hour or so before you get bored of it and it doesn't feel like you are training a skill in OSRS. I envisioned the skill to be something similar to uncharted isles in RS3, where you talk to an NPC near a port and he sends you to some procedurally generated islands where you get to all kinds of different skilling and combat activities. Based on your level you would be able to choose different types of isles and at certain levels you unlock some kind of boss island. Also you would have been able to gather some new resources exclusively from those islands for other skills. Idk something like that i didn't fully flecthed it out in my mind. Actually sailing on a boat, attacking other players and salvaging missions don't sound appealing to me, but i guess we'll see...
Without adding power creep there's probably less than a dozen options for meaningful change. I'm hoping Jagex is of the mind of not shaking things up with sailing but allowing meaningful interaction between other skills and sailing.
Sailing would introduce new areas to explore like new unique islands and hidden treasures only accessible via boat. Certainly better than any bank standing skill. Let the devs cook!

Like you get job to go get cargo from another port and bring it back or you have cargo that has to be taken to another port but the sea is raging and you lose so cagro if you can't avoid the waves you would have a meter showing the percentage of cargo you have left. Maybe be you get a treasure map as a reward and have to find it, kinda like a clue scroll. You could have random NPC boats attack you and try to take your goods and you have to fight them off. Idk maybe
I'm a junior gameplay and systems programmer at a small studio, it usually takes until very late in a project before a game looks somewhat presentable. Most people don't understand how much under the hood stuff is getting done because it doesn't look like anything. From my perspective, it's better to just be a bit patient and let them cook

You know what I was thinking about this comment. I understand that the graphics and movement are going to be choppy. The basic gameplay they have come up with is fluffing the sails. Imagine with me for a minute you are in lumbridge and trying to run to mages back however you run energy won’t go above five. And you keep clicking run to get there faster. Tedious
its significantly easier with bp since the projectile is a tick faster. he just did the dumb and clicked brew to lower his max hit lower than boulder hp

Jagex needs to give us more of a general exploring look into sailing, show the potential for huge map updates and evrything you can do in the open ocean, its just agility on water atm, wich nobody cares about. Show us the potential, not just the frustratingly slow progress on the basic models and movement.

I got a second inferno cape and a spare quiver for this eventuality. Personally looking forward to all the 1kc 'I didn't buy it I swear' crowd losing their capes when there's a new max level. And it's gonna be years, there probably aren't many maxed players with a quiver/inferno cape who somehow don't know sailing is in the works, just don't use it on the cape.

New skills always cool imo, doesnt mean you have to use it and other than more PvM content what else should they do? I mean, other than Dungeoneering and a different version of Summoning that is nothing like the og version lol
Jagex just release dungeoneering and be done with it. For chaotics: rapier requires a ghrazi rapier to make, chaotic maul requires elder maul, chaotic crossbow requires zaryte crossbow, chaotic longsword requires a recharged vesta longsword, chaotic staff requires sang staff. All weapons still have to be repaired with dungeoneering tokens. Chaotic weapons being 5% better in stats than their required weapons (passive effects are to be discussed)

I think there is too much negative feedback. It's still early alpha. Jagex honestly shouldn't even be showing this footage because they don't have anything good yet. There's a litany of reasons most developers don't show anything this early in development, and perception is a big one in many cases, I would imagine. I'm not a dev, but I'm just thinking. They should just make the ship movement function a bit more like walking when you click a tile, in my opinion, but that's my only gripe right now. I can't complain about what I haven't seen.
The game also has Firemaking, Agility, Runecrafting, Thieving, Construction, Fletching and so on that barely should count as "skills". Also they can add "teleports" to sailing by adding certain unlocks so you can auto-sail certain routes at a certain level. Or maybe just scrap the existing port system and add a central sailing hub where you can teleport too and either take your own boat or pay a small fee (from your friggin bank!) to be automatically transported there. Fees could also scale with sailing level or whatever.
I do want a new skill, but I don't want it to take 2 years to get it done. We should have voted in a smaller project skill for their first new one. Too late now obviously, but I just sincerely hope the skill actually releases in 2025. Otherwise I feel like it's taking too long.

Just add summoning and boost thralls. You know you would enjoy invisible stat boosts, extra hp regen, unique specials, extra dps etc.
