The way I see it, if any of these guys have ever done anything memorable and inspiring and worth remembering (and they have), then they're not pretenders, or imitators, for that matter; they're genuine artists. Personality and bad lifestyles aside.
I'm sure that Dave intended it to be a joke, but at the time, it didn't come across to Axl & Sebastian as one, but it appears there are no hard feelings, Dave is the King, just like Eddie is too.

Throat is fried 😂 time tells which singers were really singing correctly. The loud music could usually drown out the audible lack of tone for these guys. Once Axl hit 30 he was cancelling shows because of his throat. Inflammation from using the wrong muscles, and can’t recover as quick. Then you couple that with the insecurity of not knowing how you’ll be able to sing, in front of thousands of adoring fans. Cracks show quickly when you haven’t mastered the craft. Great frontmen, but they didn’t keep working hard enough to give them longevity. They were too desperate for fame. I bet all those times Axl was hours late he was tearing his hair out in his hotel having tried to warm up his voice and not being satisfied. Singing is hard af. Mind and body must be in harmony and practice needs to be done

I love DLR. But his singing voice, which died sometime around 2010, could not compare to Axl's five-octave singing voice in its prime. So, DLR's "pretenders to the crown" comment was misplaced.
As a frontman, Dave's showmanship wins, and in some cases thats what counts.

Apart from a few die-hards, no one has been interested in DLR in recent decades. Either he was in VH or he just didn't have a career at all.
Apart from his first two solo albums in the 80s.
Live he was almost always a catastrophe in terms of vocals, hardly ever sold solo albums, but he's supposed to be the number one of them all, just because he fools around on stage and doesn't take himself that seriously?
Dave die-hards have really strong criteria when it comes to rating singers.
He was more of a circus entertainer, but he was never remotely close to being a gifted frontman at any point.
Even if you don't like Baz and Axl there are still tons of other frontmen or actual singer/performers who would be way ahead of him on such a list.
He was just lucky to have found EDV, because without him and without the VH party he would not have landed anywhere.
