    Hi James, if you go back and look at your video of the accessories drive belt at 7:47 and by pausing, then using the keyboard keys to move frame by frame you can see the belt is jumping up and down a fair amount. This is likely because something is dragging irregularly causing slack then tension at that point vs a smooth rotation. This is telling you that you may have some signs of bearing failure in alternator's future or or irregular connection/slippage at one of the various pulleys. Since the previous failure was at alternator's tensioner, it probably spun belt in place a bit before jumping out of groove and slightly wore that pulley's cheeks just a bit out of round... the video doesn't show the rest of pulley to belt contact, but you can see if it rises up and down in groove along it's contact points around full rotation. It should stay at same depth all around on all pulleys continuously while operating or it will be stretching and flexing until it fails.

    I've been sailing since I was 5 and I'm 54 now. When I started racing catamarans, I read a cat racing book and something blew my mind. Sailboats don't get pushed by the wind, they get sucked forward by the low pressure on the back side of the sail. The sail is a vertical wing, and the back of the sail is the "top" of the wing where air is going faster creating a low pressure bubble. The keel keeps the boat from getting pulled downwind. I didn't really believe it and had to think about it for a while, but it's true. Mathematically, the vectors don't lie. This is in response to your narration about "the first time you feel the wind pushing you..." that's what made me remember that little fact of sailing. The vectors on a windsurfer are insane. Craziness. On a lot kite surfer, they're alien.

    James did you just plug off the end of the tempature/pressure relief valve for that hot water tank? Bad idea, watch some RUclips videos of what happens when a water heater ruptures when the relief is plugged. You're probably ok if you only heat off the engine but if you use the dockside electric heating element and it malfunctions you could be in real trouble. Be sure to add it to your list to fix that TP Valve not just to get a better plug. James you are a good DIY guy. take that TP valve apart, there should be a seat with a spring behind it to set the pressure. You may be able to clean or flip the sealing surface on the seat over so it stops leaking. Did you replace the pressure water pump on the boat? Your pressure pump may be putting out higher pressure than the origional setting on the TP. you might just need to tighten the spring and set the relief pressure a little higher and it could stop leaking.

    Hello James - I really admire that you never give up on any problem or issue. Thank you for that - it helps the rest of us to know that the best approach is to keep a cool head and work forward to a solution. Regarding your belt rubbing on the through bolt - if your alternator has room to pivot and move a little bit one way or the other perhaps you could get a slightly longer or shorter belt which would move the belt fully away from the pivot bolt. If the belt is straddling the pivot bolt it would be completely safe from rubbing even if it jumps around a bit from a dragging bearing or something else. See if you can get the belt path to be completely away from the bolt. Just a thought....stay strong.

    Hi James, these nay sayers know nothing about running a boat. I always used to say that something would break or go wrong every day. And if nothing breaks today, expect two things to break tomorrow. When you are on a passage you fix it with what you have on hand....the closest store might be a thousand miles away! Aloha mate, have fun!

    • @ianc4901
      @ianc4901 2 года назад +3

      When on a passage you have to do what it takes to keep the systems running with whatever is at hand, that's true but when the passage is over to need to fix things permanently !
      If you are relying on a lot of temporary fixes to keep you going then you are heading for disaster, you must make time to sort out those temporary fixes as soon as possible, ignoring them is very risky ! I see James is trying to keep on top of things by writing down what he's done so he can put it right later but he is also finding jobs that he hasn't written down and made good, that's where small problems turn into major issues !

      @@thelastpirate James I've been watching your episodes since you restored the original Zingaro, and yes, you are quite talented at McGyvering temporary fixes.......BUT I have to agree with Ian on this one: it would APPEAR from the video footage that you used a SCREW for that alternator pivot that ultimately broke, NOT a "bolt". That threaded rod that you used the second time around is WAY thicker in diameter than any "screw" I've ever seen, so I'm guessing here that the SCREW you used was MUCH TOO SMALL for the stresses involved. That being said: KEEP LIVING THE DREAM, Dude!

    The nut is on the wrong end with that alternator mount. The correct bolt would have a much lower profile head than a nut and it should be well clear of the belt. At the aft end, there should be a slotted sleeve that springs outward against that rear hole in the bracket, to prevent rattling that would loosen the fit in time, and also be a close fit to the bolt passing through it. That slotted sleeve would be trimmed to correctly fill the gap between the rear mount and the rear of the alternator and such that the rear edge of the sleeve lies flush with the rear surface of the mount. There should also be a flanged nut at rear, with wide spring washer so the nut can be tightened up equally against the sleeve and the bracket. Yes, you were without any of the correct parts, but your thinking seems to be backwards, thinking a bolt passing forward and that hasn’t helped you.

    Hi James, regarding water lines and more so hot water lines. A good plastic of choice is "PEx" (polyethylene cross linked). Will perform without issues as long as water temp is under around 160 F. Plumbing trade supplies, "Sharkbite" brand or one of the equivalents. A better choice is "PEx, aluminium, PEx composite" multilayer pipe used in hydronic heating systems and might be a little difficult to locate. Nylons and Polythylene materials tend to age quickly in heated water and pressure rating becomes next to nothing. Take care. Cheers.

    Here's an idea for you in case your belt comes off again... Find some kind of bit or attachment that you can put on the end of a drill to spin the water pump with or without the engine running to get things cooled down or flowing so you don't overheat... 5 minutes of a battery powered drill could mean the difference between a cooked or cooled engine.

    I'd be very interested in reading about boat owners who have re-plumbed their fresh and salt water lines specifically using PEX-B (typically red, blue or white color). And what kind of fittings they used. It seems vastly superior to me than generic plastic hoses and hose-clamps, is not particularly expensive, and has been proven in residential installation for 40 years. It's stiff like piping or tubing, so has to be run like that with elbows, but unlike metal can be bent a little bit without kinking.
    It appears that using copper crimp rings on C69300 alloy brass (anti-dezincification) fittings for tube-to-tube connections would be optimal, with 'sharkbite' push-fittings used for hard to reach places. Crimp rings also on bronze fittings up to 3/4 inch that need to be threaded into tanks, vessels, ports and through-hulls. What's not to like?

    • @SteinVarjord
      @SteinVarjord 2 года назад +1

      @Arms Length. I like pex, but most brands state a 60 degrees C working temp, while hot water systems normally operate around 80C. My experience tells me that’s not as problematic as it might sound, but still not ideal if a long duration is the goal. Pex with shark-bite or similar is really easy and smooth to use, but I prefer hot water rated hoses and good clamps.

    If you have to dead end a line just shove a bolt in the end, find one that you have to tap in or heat the line first, then put a clamp on it. The line will bind into the bolt threads. I've seen it last decades that way. If you ever have to open it, just unscrew the bolt. Get some nut drivers to tighten clamps. Flat screwdriver and clamp in your hand, one slip and your guitar days are over.

    Hey bro, only use the screw clamps as a temporary fix. That's the reason that your clear tube "Exploded" was because the tubing was eventually cut and pierced by the edges of the screw clamp. Better choices for clamps, especially when trying to achieve a "No Fail" condition are the wire spring clamps or the flat wire spring clamps. Using screw clamps, eventually, even your fiber tubing will weaken and split at the screw clamp(s).

    I hope you don't ordinarily run water in the Perkins as the primary coolant , to get out of trouble yes but at all other times use a proper anti-corrosion , anti boil coolant mix .

    Just a hint. If you got a drill and buy a mortis bit. Coconut milk is easy to get. And if you can get a splitting wedge for firewood, they are good to open coconuts.

    I can set-up that Washburn for ya. It'll blow your mind how good it can play with a Pro Set-Up. I don't normally advise Elixers, but on the ocean, you'll need them.

    If the belt rubs the bolt, can you turn the bracket upside down? Would that put the bolt in a better position relative to the belt?

    Hey James and crew, good job with your repairs as I would imagine you have to Mcgyver a lot on a boat . I would want you as a sailing partner if I went out sailing. I get to armchair my adventures through you and really enjoy watching. Im a mechanic by trade and have had to Mcgyver so much over the years and have gotten out of some crazy situations so much respect to you. most of your crews over the years don't really understand how valuable you are. your doing what most of us can only dream about. thx

    That's a very important bracket and bolt as you already know, I'd install a proper one before leaving that island for sure, could become a pricey disaster and could put lives in danger. safe sails Brother, please stay safe. Good video..

    A friend of mine bought a brand new Sailboat. He said his boat wasn't going to break and he wasn't going to have to fix his boat in paradise. Guess what, he's in the Bahamas fixing his boat on the first season. B.O.A.T. Break Out Another Thousand. LMAO

    Instead of bending the waterline in half, can you find a plug (maybe a bolt that has smooth shaft near the head of the bolt) similar to the inside diameter or shape a piece of wood to make a plug and than clamp that tight? Just a thought.

    Scary repair. Precise belt pulley alignment is crucial to not burning up another belt. Threads in the mount/contact area of a bolt will always be a weak spot, especially on a vibrating part like a alternator mount. Check the repair often. Not safe for a long passage.

  • @peterhatton7558

    back hole is missing a movable spacer that gets pulled in when you do up the bolt, that stainless threaded bar with nut welded on is a poor choice, use at least grade 5 hi tensile with hardened washers to get pulley alignment correct.
    Perkins uses all grade 5 fasteners, it is a subsidy of caterpillar with uses only grade 8 hi tensile or better. you could get bolts from a caterpillar dealer and the a hardened washers for a very cheap price compared to the rubbish hardware stores sell.
    they have a book called one safe source, and it has all their washers and hi tensile bolts in it with part no so super easy to work out what you want] I would think it would be on the internet now days in some form.
    using the correct fasteners and hardened washers is really the only way to get a engine repair to last and last.
    and you get a great nites sleep knowing bit wont be flying off.
    any way I must watch the rest of the vid now to see the beautiful ladies. l.o.l

    I added to my departure checklist "turn off water pump" and "open sink valves". No more blown lines as the water temperature rises from the heat exchanger and builds tons of pressure in the plumbing system. Sometimes even causing small cracks in the water heater.

    Mesure across the alternator holding bracket+3/4inch, an Autoparts store or Hardware store, will have a bolt to fit. Use a double lock-nut on the bolt. A spacer needs to keep it rock steady, the bolt fits through the spacer. Get two belts, so you have an extra. Mesure the bolt hole opening too, get flat washer too, where the nuts will go.

      There is a global supply chain issue and a pandemic. I am having troubles sourcing common parts in the states. I can’t imagine waiting on a custom bracket in a Caribbean island in these times. If James didn’t use a little ingenuity. Zingaro wouldn’t ever leave the port.

    At your next opportunity, take the alternator and bracket to a mechanic who can weld. Get rid of all the slop by welding on a bushing where needed and get the proper size bolt so there is NO slop in any of the mounting. Measure from the front of the flange forward to where the best belt alignment would be. Take that measurement with you to the mechanic, so he can properly set it up for you, in the shop, so it goes back on the engine without any fuss.
