  • A talk given at UXPA UK's 'UX & Video Games' event - 19 January 2017.
In this talk, Alistair will explore the similarities and differences he experienced when moving between ‘Mainstream’ and Games User Research, and where he feels each can learn from the other.
Alistair works as a user researcher at Player Research, a video game UX consultancy. Previously he led user design and research at Pottermore (the Harry Potter website), worked as a lead consultant at Webcredible (a user experience and accessibility agency), as lead user experience consultant at Ominor (an e-commerce agency), and even found time to do a spot of freelance, before deciding it wasn’t for him. He’s worked on over 100 games, from one man indies to AAA titles such as FIFA.
He’s trying to pretend that playing games for a living is a genuine career, and no-one’s called him on it yet.

This is amazing. I am currently taking the Google UX cert and was going over research methods and was like “how the hell can this even apply to a live Free to Play game?”. Completely different worlds. And to think this was 5 years ago - I really wonder what has changed!

Was good to listen to! I do think his scope of mainstream ux seems limited to websites and single pieces of a journey. there’s design for entire services including nondigital touchpoints that involve extremely interesting research questions

Great introduction about the difference between traditional UX and UX for games. Exactly what I was looking for.
I want in (namely to be a Games UX Designer). Who's hiring in Stockholm, Sweden?

good video but it would be fair to call it UX Research, not just UX. He is talking about UX research methods. I was expecting a different content :)
