  • A brief discussion of the important place music (in the form of hymnody and otherwise) has in personal and corporate spiritual development; mainly this is an excuse for me to show-n-tell some neat Prayer Book and Hymnal sets.

I have never really used a Prayer book. I lack much in this area, but your videos have made me consider using something to get me more on track. I do read the Bible daily, and attend church weekly (Seventh day Adventist) I do visit many other churches to learn new ideas and theologies. take care

Spot on. I can seldom remember repeating the contents of any sermon, but I often have considered to sing the hymns after many Sundays.

Those mini-BCPs are excellent. About a year ago, I picked up a 1662 with Hymns Ancient and Modern, in one very small volume: just 4.5 x 3 x 0.75". Published by Cambridge, it seems to be from 1939. The BCP part is surprisingly readable, even if the paper quality isn't that great, and is a little yellowed. The hymns, not so much.

I'm a sucker for any BCP, but especially the tiny ones.

I started this one a month ago but got distracted... probably by my progeny. Hymns and songs are so important in the church, as we sing them and repeat them so much, we memorize them. I remember a conversation a few years ago with a music director of a church. She was very careful about the theology and language of contemporary songs they sang as part of the service, and sometimes had to say no to songs that were popular on Christian radio but she felt went against what their church teaches. I really admired the work she put into the music ministry, it a very important position in the church indeed.
In my own tradition the UMC has increasingly moved to to contemporary services and away from the UMC hymnal... I don't think that's the only reason for their problems, but I do wonder if it isn't a significant factor. I know some of the Methodist/Wesleyan beliefs and theology I absorbed as a youth are more the result of hymns singing than sermons or Sunday school lessons!

It's part of the DNA of Wesleyans: hymnody as catechesis.
