I saw something in my travels the other day, a working and running JD 89 lawn mower. It looked to be in great shape as the owner cut a beautiful diamond pattern in his lawn. Now, to this video... OUTSTANDING WORK! The sidewalk and dock look great! I love that they brushed the top of the concrete so it wouldn't be slippery when wet. Now to clean up the over pours and lay down that rock and pea gravel beach. Are you going to have water trucked in to fill the pond? Seems like a better idea than burning up your pump and draining your well. Then again, in the house where I grew up we had three wells, one inside the house in the basement, one outside the trap door for the basement under a yew shrub and one on the west side of the detached garage. I don't remember exact depths but I know that the one in the basement was the shallowest and the one by the garage was the deepest. Love the Father's Day tradition of the twins decorating the inside of the shop door! They are so creative! Great job! Outstanding video! Can't wait to see the next one! Thank you Neil and Travis 👍👍🥰🥰🤗🤗😘😘
Hey thanks so much Susan! That JD89 would be cool to see in the wild. This concrete has been a long time coming and I'm glad to finally have it done. I think it will really set this off and make it unique. Thanks for another great comment and have a good week!
Fun concrete pier (Gantry) story. Another inspector and I was waiting for the concrete to be completed on 6 piers. After completing our tests on the final concrete truck, were were standing outside of our work trucks just talking and facing away from the operation. All of a sudden we hear *crack* *CRACK* "Oh S**t!" *Boom* *CRACK!!!*... The final wooden form around the head of the pillar had snapped at the bottom and poured out concrete. Luckily, I'm the EC (erosion control) inspector in site and am able to give instruction on what to do in order to avoid EC issues, and the time limit on concrete trucks being able to operate on roads has ended. Another bright side, I got an additional 3 hours of overtime while the crew cleaned up the spill area around the base of the pillar and washed out the top of the pillar (in order to restore the area back to how it was originally). 10/10, would inspect again.
Hey Doug, does Adam have any plans on doing a similar rock ledge on his pond redo? Even without a sidewalk I really like the idea for helping to maintain the edge. I need to redo my pond & I’m going to do something similar but I’ll probably use a 4-6” riprap stone.
Cool project and I enjoy watching it grow! As european civil engineer I would do some things a bit different (I know that you guys in US don't use it as much as we do ;) ) 1) Bottom of the sidewalk should be separated from the ground with foil - to prevent water (cementinous grout) from escaping to earth. 2) There are better ways of elevating rebar, there are some pre-made plastic stand-offs - to keep distance consistent and maintain good rust protection of rebar with concrete. 3) For sidewalk it would be better to use mesh or dispersed reinforcement - rebars act only locally. 4) I did not see the crew using any concrete vibrators - and they should to get smother surfaces and better strength. There is even a special type for flat surfaces (surface vibrations) that makes the job a whole lot easier and better results. 5) You may want to paint the pillars and whole deck to just to prevent bioerosion and make them look nicer - there are specialistic paints dedicated to protect concrete in water. 6) Pillars should have at least a little bit of stirrup reinforcement, and usually you want to make a foot underneath - but in your case they are so incredibly oversized that it should be ok. 7) Before pouring pillars it would be good to do some mechanical compaction of the ground under, and some foil too. Not being critical, just sharing knowledge. I hope your concrete will do just fine, overall it looks very nice! Since it is not a critical infrastructure and is oversized big time it should be totally fine and missing this points should not impact it. You can pass this tips to the crew so they can keep improving :) Remember to WATER IT A LOT in first week, like try to keep it wet all the time ideally. This will result in good strength and less cracks.
Great tips! I've never heard of the foil thing. There is lots of concrete everywhere around here in direct contact with the dirt? They did use a vibrating cordless tool on the pier I just didn't capture it. The tubes are on pretty sizable footings too. Thanks for all the suggestions. Very interesting and informative.
@@GOAT_GOATERSON Another American here - I've seriously never heard of foil and I want to know more. I understand the concept; what about in practice? What is "foil"? What's the actual layering & setup?
Holy smokes! I haven't seen an old school miter saw like that in years. My Dad used one like that up until about the last 10 years of his life when he finally bought a powered compound miter saw. He would have kept using it, but he could no longer find anyone to sharpen the saw. That's cool and brings back great memories. The pond is coming along nicely, and the girls did great on their artwork.
Thank you sir. Yeah, my father in law can keep that old stuff going. He is able to sharpen them. You gave me a good video idea: "Cordless Miter Saw Runs For Weeks With No Electricity"!
Your respect and acknowlegdement of the crews experience, doing this job is a pleasure to watch, knowing you have a lot input, but lets them go on with their jobs anyway. 🙂 I love the stile, the historie, your dad, the girls are so sweet, its all so civilized and gives me hope for the USA, when us in the EU dont understand how anyone can vote for Trump and all the crazy stuff that come out his mouth..

Hi Neil. It is pretty amazing to me how concrete guys can finish it so even and smoothly. I've done a couple small concrete jobs and they are passable but not as perfect as a pro would do. That is a lot of concrete! I'll bet you could breath a sign of relief when it was done. The Father's Day artwork is priceless! Perfect to commenerate the pond project. Thanks for the video! -mike
Swimming pond looks great! We will see how smooth the sides of the piers will be. I have seen people use their sawszall without a blade as a way to vibrate the sides to get them smoother. Or use a drop in vibration around the sides as the tubes were filled. Either way the piers are there to hold up the deck and most of pier will be under water and out of site.
Very nicely done, good crew on the concrete, looks good on the camera anyway, nice little touch putting the chamfer on the bottom of the pier sir, not only aides safety, it also makes it look finished. Not that it makes a difference, but, I like it, thanks for the update.

Great video! I feel part of the DDDiy crew because my wife found a new toy for me this weekend at a garage sale. A John Deere E130 riding mower. Hello Neil, yet another cool video from the swimming pond project. The concrete guys and girls did a nice job on the concrete . You did a good job on the prepwork before concrete. It's way easier to do a nice job with good preparation . You will definitely have a low maintenance pier . Funny concrete mixer you have in the USA, but I have to admit that these vehicles are really handy. Never seen these in europ . It's going to be a nice pond once finished. Keep up the good work and I will definitely come back to see the progress. Wish you al the best. Greetings from belgium 🇧🇪

Hey Neil, your videos were randomly recommended, and I watched these pond build videos, and enjoyed all of it. It was very satisfying to see younger and older family members getting together to assist. Your voice reminds of Kevin Costner. I will subscribe, if there is more stuff to come?
@ 14;43 George said So far so good! But deep down under his breath he's saying Until it dries and starts to crack all over the place from not having expansion joints. this job needs many cuts in order for the concrete to have a place to intentionally crack. other wise it cracks all over the place in every direction. plus with not tying the rebar together gives it no strength. they might do concrete in Mexico one way but in Americana No bueno! this is big money and should not cut important corners. you can still help this issue by cutting many 8x8 or 8x10 joints all around this whole pour. with a concrete saw blade. wear a mask. by cutting the joints you are giving the concrete a place to break underneath keeping it from breaking where it wants to and then looking horrible on top. hope all goes well my freind and good luck.
Neil, this pond is going to be Epic, the cost of the concrete alone, a walkway, tied into a pier is genius, you talk about low maintenace, maybe power wash every few years, maybe, what a crew, floating that concrete is a work of art, and George sure knows what he is doing, with the forms put into place, and that crew working the concrete and pouring massive pillars for support, wow, this wasn`t cheap, 20k is just a guess.this is gonna be a pond like no other I have seen. My friend has a pond, it`s clay with a wood deck, this is next level stuff for sure, love the build, the girls will be in heaven, and you now have an ice rink for skating.
Thanks Joe! I was fortunate to be able to help the crew with the job and save some costs so I don't have nearly that much in it, but still a chunk. I'm hoping it will serve us for many years to come. The beach will really finish it off.
It's always amazing how many experts come outta the woodwork to tell ya what you did wrong n what you should've done. Let the hater's hate and enjoy that awesome swimming pond. I just have one big problem with the whole project. Im jealous that I don't have one just like it in my backyard lol. Can't wait to see when its completely finished. Enjoy the reward for all the hard work you put in to it !!
All the concrete work was fun to watch, amazing how fast they can complete the job, came out fantastic. Nice design Neil. One thing I noticed the women working didn't seem to be dressed for the occasion lol. Also love the Father's day tradition, gonna need a bigger garage door soon !!
I never even imagined having a pond like you're building, very cool. Bummer how a couple of the saw cuts chipped out, but once the new gets knocked off the pond no one will ever notice. I'm anxious to see the finished pond.
Very interesting. I think I may have went with 1 ton interlocking concrete blocks for those piers. We had an entire yard filled with them to make a privacy/ sound barrier wall. Will never use anything but them again for structural stuff. That being said, this was a fantastic crew and like you, I would hire them in a heartbeat for any concrete work without hesitation
Nice progress. Nice to have a good plan going in. Few questions… 1) which way is the sidewalk pitched encompassing the pond? 2) did these guys have a handheld concrete vibrator they could have used? 3) did they look at wet troweling in joints? Sorry to ask all these questions but with the industry I grew up and work in municipal wastewater…large rebar cages, panels, vibrators, to build huge tanks, bldgs, catwalks, piers, etc. these tools are a necessity.
1. The sidewalk is pitched inward to the pond. The video makes it look pitched out but it isn't. 2. They had a vibrator that they used in the pier I just didn't capture it on video. 3. They were afraid that the concrete would get away from them before having time to wet trowel the joints in. So we considered it but I said it was OK to cut it instead.
Nice job girls!!! Neil your girls are great! Happy belated Fathers Day to you!!! Pond is coming along, so much fun watching. I’m a little disappointed that you didn’t have the wife out there smoothing out that concrete. Have a great day Koch family!!!!
Watching in reverse order (real shame), this was very interesting..the raw footage, the detail, explanations and at times how you acted like the expectant father 😉, can't fault the crews you selected. Mr Jonas Eicher should really invest is proper footware for his daughters! Tremendous amount of hardwork went into this, can imagine the thought and planning process was stressful.
I also really like the patterned concrete look for the sidewalk , which basically a sheet formed into a stamp that sets a pattern on the top of the concrete .. so you can make it look like a cobblestone walk but solid concrete ..
Neil going for the residential record on concrete footers! Those things are wonderful though, the cardfoot footer tubes. I've used the 'little' 2 footers for all kinds of things like pourable refractory walls for forges and firepits. It does make it a lot easier being able to burn them out versus the fight of peeling them. Next time you have a relatively smaller concrete job, I can send you a pint can of graphene to make it nearly bombproof. 😁
So cool!! Family working together to help out, sounds like old school farming. 😉 Great Video! Curious about how you plan on filtering and aerating the pond, pool, you know what I mean.
Ain't a big fan of your concrete guys .. they might not be in the building codes but rebar is cheap insurance and you may pay sooner rather than later for not having proper caissons in your peers and a proper rebar cage for your footings and the stagered verts in the tubes ain't gonna do shit .. don't understand how you can have concrete piers in water without proper rebar , but I just worked with it for 25 years ain't a engineer
An idea for you... place a number of concrete culvert tubes vertically around the inside perimeter of the pond and use as planters, or even a waterfall for aeration.
Seeing that concrete oval makes me wanna race my grandson with our RC Monster Trucks… just wish you’d have put in a couple of jumps, mud puddles and slopes to climb! The ramp is gonna be awesome. Whether jumping in, sitting and watching the young-uns swim or just ending the day in tranquility with a cool refreshment… it’s bound to be worth every penny and drop of sweat! We’ve had this discussion before… watching an expert work is fascinating. But! When there is an entire crew of them acting in unison… fascination turns to total captivation. Are you going to seal the relief cuts to prevent freeze heave? It worked wonders on my hot tub pad. It cracked right in the expansion joints but nary a bit of surface heave. You are making a lot of progress bud. Your family is gonna love it when their vision comes to life!!!
Thanks Dave. I was pondering the sealing of the joints. I did it in my shop and it was nice to keep the dirt out of the cracks. I wasn't sure how it would hold up outdoors. If you've had good luck with it then I should probably consider it. Did you use any backing rod under the caulk? I'm glad you mentioned it as that may be a nice way to finish off the look too. I always appreciate your feedback. Now to start shopping for the right product!
Love that his daughters showed up to pour concrete in shorts and sandals. 🤣 I think I would've gone with stamped concrete here. Would've added something really neat to the design. The work they did was great though! Looks incredible.
We talked about trying to do something more decorative, but then it wouldn't have matched everything else and would have added much more cost. Ultimately we went for the more affordable route for us but stamped would have been awesome!

Then again, in the house where I grew up we had three wells, one inside the house in the basement, one outside the trap door for the basement under a yew shrub and one on the west side of the detached garage.
I don't think you watched long enough... :(
Neil, this pond is going to be Epic, the cost of the concrete alone, a walkway, tied into a pier is genius, you talk about low maintenace, maybe power wash every few years, maybe, what a crew, floating that concrete is a work of art, and George sure knows what he is doing, with the forms put into place, and that crew working the concrete and pouring massive pillars for support, wow, this wasn`t cheap, 20k is just a guess.this is gonna be a pond like no other I have seen.
The way you guys capture memories is incredible! Great work on the pond project, have a great week
Thank you!
Looks amazing, yall will love this....nice job guys! The girls did a awesome job on your father's day drawing!
Thanks so much
Coming along great! Looking forward to seeing it all completed. Lovin' the garage door
I wasn’t a fan of the concrete around the banks at first but after seeing it poured, it looks good.
Thanks 👍🏻
The pond is looking great. The concrete crew did a beautiful job. That Fathers Day door panel is such a cool idea/ tradition. Great job girls!
All the concrete work was fun to watch, amazing how fast they can complete the job, came out fantastic. Nice design Neil. One thing I noticed the women working didn't seem to be dressed for the occasion lol. Also love the Father's day tradition, gonna need a bigger garage door soon !!
I asked them if their Dad won't pay for boots or what! They acted like no big deal and just rinsed off with the truck.
Everything is looking great!! Now you just need some rain to start filling it😊
Getting a little this morning!
@@digdrivediy we live about straight west of you 50 miles and we got .5” this morning
I never even imagined having a pond like you're building, very cool. Bummer how a couple of the saw cuts chipped out, but once the new gets knocked off the pond no one will ever notice. I'm anxious to see the finished pond.
Yes, you don't really notice or think of it too much fortunately.
Okay... Next level... lazy river around pond with bridge over it!💭
Very interesting.
That would have been a good use of them for sure. If you could reach out there to place them is all!
Nice progress. Nice to have a good plan going in. Few questions…
1) which way is the sidewalk pitched encompassing the pond?
When you’re dumping stone to be graded by hand, small piles. Start at where your bucket first hits inside the form, dump stone and roll forward.
Awesome, thank you!
@@digdrivediy Dang it takes all sorts🤓I see you are being showered with love and wishes of success, new BBF's ?!!
It’s nice to see a couple of gal’s working that concrete.👏👏👏👏
I also really like the patterned concrete look for the sidewalk , which basically a sheet formed into a stamp that sets a pattern on the top of the concrete .. so you can make it look like a cobblestone walk but solid concrete ..
Great project Neil - love seeing the progression of each stage.
Great stuff Neil
I wish I could help Neal. Looks great and love the concrete pier!!
Thanks Bud!
Great job looking great keep up the great work love your videos thank you
Thanks Ed!
This pond is going to be awesome. Keep up the great work
Hello from the Netherlands.
thanks for the video Neil.
Sincerely Hollandduck
Looking great Neil. Great job as always. Your videos are always enjoyable. What an awesome project.
Thanks I really appreciate it!
Only in a America do get to buy lots of land and build whatever you want on it.
You have a really nice manner about you
Enjoy your pond
We can't quite do whatever we want 😋
But that's part of why we love America!
I can imagine the stress level going up, as they started to pour the deck on the Pier. I think that pond will be there for decades to come.
Stress level = 10
Love this series. Looks great so far. Hats off to you and all involved! 🇺🇸👍❤️
I’m thinking Diving Board! Give me a Hell Yeah!!!! 😆
Both my daughters: "Heck yeah" 🤣
I’d offer to help with the stone but… by the clip, I’d guess it’s already done haha. Looking great!
It was a little overkill but we only had to buy one 13 foot tube:)
Been enjoying this series! Looks great
Thanks so much Hank!
Looking great Neil
So cool!! Family working together to help out, sounds like old school farming. 😉 Great Video! Curious about how you plan on filtering and aerating the pond, pool, you know what I mean.
Thanks!
Still sorting out the details.
Looking good. Will be nice
What an awesome project! Close family and hard workers!!
Wow looks awesome. Thats going to look great when done.
Love the pond build, but I love the history recorded on your garage door even more...
I'm hooked! Nice work!
Frank in Colorado
Good concrete finishers are fun to watch. It is an art.
@@digdrivediy That's fair enough! I think it looks awesome. Can't wait to see it full of water!
