Might mention that the braking system on the X series is in the rear transaxle & not on the rear wheels. No need to worry about brake pads... I personally love this feature.
@@WesternEquipment anti scalping wheels x354 question Sooo..... how do I know what the correct level is..? I guess I'm just not quite understanding how to properly manage the correct hight..
Very informative overview. Kudos on the presentation and to the cameraperson. Just ordered a new X354. Time to put the 90s vintage Craftsman out to pasture.
Wow! What a great video! You are a great communicator and did an awesome job on reviewing this tractor, everything I wanted and needed to know! Thanks so much!
Important note: I think the 4 wheel steer feature on this mower works well with outside curves but not so much inside curves. I believe you may need the 48” deck if the inside curve of a mulch bed or sidewalk needs the deck to reach it. I don’t think the 4 WS alone will make that happen for you on the 42” deck. My number one reason to select a 4 WS is to avoid coming back to trim. To test this simply spray paint or mark the travel of the tire path then note the 42” deck cannot reach the outer edge of the tire path. Correct me if I’m wrong. I almost made an expensive blunder selecting the X354. Perhaps this could be a topic on another video? Thx
Idea for a video; try fitting the new seat (much more robust) on the 2021 X354 to an older John Deere X380 to replace that older seat. That would be a great upgrade as my 2020 seat has already worn through.
Zero turns are usually not good on steep ditches. How are four wheel steer units on ditches? Mine require a good amount of "lean". Another educational video. Thanks.
They perform just like a normal tractor style. Since there are no swivel wheels they will stay solid and straight as long as you keep the steering wheel straight. Thanks for watching!
Very professional and informative video, Brent. A few questions for you regarding the 4 wheel steering. 1) I have a extremely steep hill in my front yard. With my old LX277, I have to drive straight up and then back down the hill while cutting. Would the 4 wheel steer veer off from a straight line while backing down? 2) Does the 4 wheel steering require more maintenance than the traditional rear drive.? Thanks
Thank you for the comment. To answer your questions: 1) It should not veer off as long as you are holding the wheel straight just as you would your LX277. 2) It will require two additional grease points at the rear as shown in the video at 19:27 in this video. Great questions and thanks for watching!
Hi Bred, hope your well man,i got my X350R are all tuned up and working like a dream, what i noticed on the drive system for the mower deck belts is there are 2 drive systems there, with one coming of the drive pulley of the other, and one being a double sided v belt which of coarse just has v shaped pulleys in its drive chain but can drive both sides of the belt, the other is a standard v shaped belts with 2 tensioner pulleys with the flat side used against the tensioner pulleys of coarse, thought id mention this because this explains why you just cant get these 2 belts mixed up guys if you need to change your belts,im sure you would know this but to anyone whos not familiar just thought id point this out, also when you use your 3/8 wrench to take the tension of the crank pulley it must be done on the the left side of the mower when sitting on the tractor as this one comes of the crank pulley the tensioner on the right side is a separate belts piggy back of the crank pulley belts, great videos and catch you again.David uk England.
Thanks David, I’m doing well! Hope things are good in the UK. Great points you brought up. I will make sure to do some videos explaining some of these concepts. Thanks for watching!
No, you do not need to treat it. You will be good to go with your ethanol free gas. The only time i suggest treating your fuel is before putting your mower up for storage or if it is going to sit for more than a month without use.
Just bought a x354 and really like it. I had the one touch system installed by the dealer. Question: what electrical connection needs to be disconnected to remove the deck? Would it be in the wire harness or at the actuator?
That is a good question. I have not installed that attachment to a mower yet but I am leaning towards it being at the actuator. If all else fails, follow the wiring from the actuator up to the wiring harness and you will find a connection somewhere. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Great videos! Can do a follow up with the possibility/use of snow blower, snow plow, leaf collection system with the X300 series?? Or are those are better suited for the X500/X700 series?
Yes, I am hoping I can do all of these things this fall/winter. And the X300 are very capable of all of these things. Great questions and thanks for watching!
Hey Brent! I have an X370 and love it. Is there a video or some instruction on how to access the gas tank? I need to address a service issue with a tube going to the top of it (it broke off). Videos on other models seek to indicate I need to remove the entire green shroud in order to do this. Seems pretty complex. Any thoughts on this?
Would like to see different deck widths against RIGHT turning edges such as curved landscaping and flower beds. Many 42” and smaller will leave large untrimmed edges simply because mower wheels will hit the edging because of the concave shapes.
Great video Brent! As always lots of great information! Love the 4 wheel turning! John Deere just keeps getting better! Thanks for sharing! Have a great and awesome day!
No, I do not but the main grease points will be your spindles on the deck, your front axle will have three grease points (one out by each wheel and then one in the center of the axle), lastly there will be grease point on you deck lifting arms. I hope this helps and hanks for watching!
I would definitely be looking into the X300 series or bigger. Snow removal will be the main reason here. The heavier built machines have better snow removal equipment and will be able to handle the load better. Good question and thanks for watching!

Great review, I have 2 X300 series JD's. Both 2011. Ones an X300 48" deck. The other is an X304 42" deck. Happy with both machines as they are smooth and have Kawasaki V twins. What about the discharge methods? I thought you can add an electronic switch for changing from side discharge to mulching. Is that correct and how reliable is it?
Yes, that is an option as well as a mechanical option with a lever on the deck to open and close the discharge. Both have been very reliable options since they have been out. Great question and thanks for watching!
Awesome and informative videos. Very impressed! I am looking to buy a JD tomorrow. I would like the x5 series for the k72 transmission. But it’s probably overkill for me. I want to pull a lawn roller, a thatcher and a leaf sweeper. Is this X354 transmission up for those tasks even on a slight incline? I don’t want to over stress the transmission and drastically shorten the life.
You may want to look into at least the X370 as it moves up in transaxle size. I wouldn’t be worried about the lawn sweeper or the thatcher but the lawn roller may require some more strength. I don’t think the X5 would be over kill for these tasks either.
@@WesternEquipment I would like to save some $$ so if you think the X384 would be adequate then I would like that one. That 4 wheel steering is very enticing. Thanks for the advice!
You should be able to find a ball with a shank that will fit in the rear hitch hole of your machine. Just be careful with hot much weight you are trying to pull with these machines. They do not have a specified payload rating so you will want to take it easy. Thanks for watching!
@@WesternEquipment Thank you. I see a lot of after market setups and didn't know if there was a JD specific option. Not looking to haul much weight. Thank you for your quick response. Oh yes, and thank you for all the great videos. You are good at it.
Hey Brent, I just bought a 2021 X394. Do know if the X350 molded seat will fit on the X394 with the new high back seat? Thank you for all the great videos 👍
I'm not sure if I'm understanding what you're asking for , I'm sorry. Could you clarify? Are you wanting the older style seat rather than the new high back seat?
@@WesternEquipment Yes, or the same seat that comes on the new x350. Just don't like the large high back seat on my x394. Would the x350 seat fit on the x394?
These are definitely worth the money to upgrade past the X300. You get the better transmission in these that will last many years. Trust me fellas it's worth every penny to upgrade past the K46 transmission in the x300 to the K58 in this model Every X series is worth it. Always buy the highest model you can afford. Higher model = better and better transmission strength. It's the most important part of a lawn mower or garden tractor.
How does this tractor do on inclines? I am looking to purchase one for my yard. I don't have a very large area to mow, but it is quite un-level with the steepest area about 18 degrees. I'm looking for a mower that I can ride on that will safely tackle this incline.
Tractor style mowers generally tend to handle slope pretty well. I have not personally driven this one on an incline. It's all about "Slow and steady wins the race" when mowing any incline. I wish i had a better answer for you. Thanks for watching!
Is thenx 300 series to much for an 1 1/2 acres lot? I don't want to get the cheap version of the S model if the 300 series will last longer, whats your tought on that buddy?
I was trying out a s180 and the seat all the way back is still tight ...6'10 400lbs ....is there a way to modify the seat to make it go back a few more inches ?
@@WesternEquipment another odd question, does any of the jd lawn mower series have non belt drive tractors? Have you ever heard of the belts slipping when the tractor is faced with a large hill or heavier load?
hey Brent. Is the S180 model really more powerful over the X354? since the S180 indicates that it has 24 hp and the X354 one of 21.5 and a lower torque
Yes it will have a more powerful engine because the S180 has a 54" deck. The X354 is of course in the higher class of mower so it has a stronger frame and more features to go along with the 4 wheel steer but less power is required since it only has a 42" deck.
Not that I have ever seen. People really like them and I have never had a trade in came in that had ever had any issues so they seem to stay sturdy over time. Thanks for watching!
Can i use a tow behind plug aerator with the x354 having a k46 transaxle? I know the k46 cant do ground engagement like cultivating but can it at least dethatch and plug aerate?
I used to dethatch/scarify, with 90 pounds, using a basic LA115 with a lesser transmission on 1 acre mowable (now I only have like .5 acre). The K46 should be fine. I'm probably going with this model myself.
Thanks again for a great review. I'm looking at buying an X354 but also thinking about the X370. When you turned the wheel in this video it looked like it wasn't a big effort and I imagine it is even easier when the tractor is moving. Maybe the power steering isn't a big difference to have on the 370?
Oh it definitely make a big difference but just keep in mind the 370 won’t be four wheel steer but if you want power steering and four wheel steer you will have to bump up to the X394. All of them are great mowers though. I hope you find what you really want and thanks for watching!
@@WesternEquipment LOL, I've already talked myself up to an X354 or and X370. I better not even think about that X394. It is kind of a tough choice. Probably the hydraulics are nice for the deck lift as well. Will have to ponder some more. Really appreciate your comments.
Haha just trying to throw out all of the options. I know these mowers can get pricy but John Deere often offers great finance options for these mowers as well. May be a way to make sense of jumping to that X394. Just a thought lol
The steering is more smooth, that extra hp is awesome for the snowblower. The seat is awesome compared to the previous years. This thing keep you in place instead of trying to eject you. Nice review btw.
So the best way to go would be with an X350 with a 42" deck and then you could go with either the manual or electric mulch control option. The manual mulch control option will have a lever on the deck to open and close the discharge chute whereas if you go with the electrical it will be more expensive.
@@WesternEquipment Well, bought somethin. They had X370s on sale for 300 bucks off and 400 bucks for my LT155. Sprung for the manual mulch control. did you ever think about doing a video on what to do about spinning tires on a 100 series mower? ruclips.net/video/yZ4bON-RZsg/видео.html putting lugs on a lawn tractor is pretty extreme. most people with a nice lawn won't want to do that
@@WesternEquipment Thanks, ya that would make a good video. I've seen that same problem happen even when mowing on mostly level ground. The best solution is probably the terra grips but if you don't have them or don't want to spend the money for them, I'm wondering if there's something else you can wrap around the tire for traction, or if there's a special way you can "jog" the transmission to get it to engage the other wheel.
Don't buy this John Deere x147r Ride on mower. Unless you want to mow a level short lawn that doesn't get too long. Maybe a bowling green would be suitable. The grass shute constantly clogs up if you mow heavy green grass so you have put your arm in and pull it all out. You have no warning when it clogs and jams the blades while the motor keeps spinning the deck belt resulting in black smoke coming out that lets you know there's serious problem. If you're lucky the belt will jump off the pulleys. Putting the catcher back on is a frustrating procedure the makes you think it from a different model. The lock catch on the catcher releases very often dropping grass out the back. The whole catcher set up is flimsy and cheap. Not too mention frustrating. Not good around trees as the catcher handle sticks up way too high and hooks onto branches. 1 hr of use after buying this brand new mower it developed an unnerving clunking sound in the deck. I've always owned John Deere and have been a happy customer, but this model is poorly engineered and designed.

These are definitely worth the money to upgrade past the X300. You get the better transmission in these that will last many years. Trust me fellas it's worth every penny to upgrade past the K46 transmission in the x300 to the K58 in this model
Every X series is worth it. Always buy the highest model you can afford. Higher model = better and better transmission strength. It's the most important part of a lawn mower or garden tractor.
Thanks for the input and thanks for watching!
It is not too much, I would actually recommend the X300 series in this case. Thanks for watching!
I was trying out a s180 and the seat all the way back is still tight ...6'10 400lbs ....is there a way to modify the seat to make it go back a few more inches ?
I am not sure if John Deere offers anything, I will have to check. There may be an aftermarket seat slide kit though.
How is the power front the engine transferred to the rear pump/ transmission? Is it a belt or shaft?
It is by belt on these mowers. Great question and thanks for watching!
@@WesternEquipment another odd question, does any of the jd lawn mower series have non belt drive tractors? Have you ever heard of the belts slipping when the tractor is faced with a large hill or heavier load?
Is the power flow bagger a option for this mower?
A power slow is only for 48" deck and bigger on these mowers. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
How hard is the steering on the x354. Get back to me please
It is fairly easy to be honest. I think just about anyone would be pleased when driving one.
Do they still make the d and e series mowers
No, they are now the S series mowers. Good question and thanks for watching!
@@WesternEquipment why they were super popular and I need a non hydrostatic transmission
Can this handle slopes well?
Yes it should handle them well. You will just have to find which way is most comfortable for you to mow them. Thanks for watching!
Great Video. I just got a new X 370. Can you do a video on the X370
Thank you and we will see what we can do. Thanks for watching!
Why no 48in deck?
That is a good question. This model just does not offer one. I believe it is mostly due to the design of the rear axle. Thanks for watching!
Awesome video! Are there any reliability issues with the 4 wheel steering?
Not that I have ever seen. People really like them and I have never had a trade in came in that had ever had any issues so they seem to stay sturdy over time. Thanks for watching!
Just make sure the U-joints on the rear axle are greased at the proper intervals.
Why no 48 in deck?
Great videos wish my dealer was good as you are hope to see a video on the the z700 series soon
Wow thank you! And stay tuned! We will be doing some videos over the Z7’s soon. Thanks for watching!
im looking at getting a X350, is there a way i can upgrade the seat to this one?
I will have to check and see if they have the same bolt pattern but I’m pretty sure they do. Thanks for watching!
@@WesternEquipment thank you for this great content!
You need to review the X370
Hopefully I can soon. Inventory is tough to get right now, but I will do my best. Thanks for watching!
Whiat is the smallest JD tractor that you can hook a bucket attachment to?
Do you mean rear bucket holder or a front end loader with a bucket?
Front bucket
@@WesternEquipment front bucket
why does the X354, x384 and X394 only come in 42" deck? Can the deck be upgraded?
So the X384 and X394 come with a 48" deck. They cannot go any bigger due to configuration with the 4-wheel steer.
I would like to see a video of the x394
Will the 2021 seat fit on the 2019 x390
Yea they should be the same bolt pattern!
Wish the mowers had tilt steering wheel
Yeah unfortunately this is only a feature on certain models.
Awesome Vidoe I have the exact mower and I have the new X394
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Which x series model would be the first model to be upgraded to the next size transaxle?
The X370 starts with the K57 which is an upgrade over the K46.
I have this one. The 2021 is way better than the 2017 model.
The upgrades are pretty nice!
The steering is more smooth, that extra hp is awesome for the snowblower. The seat is awesome compared to the previous years. This thing keep you in place instead of trying to eject you. Nice review btw.
Could you direct me to the cheapest way in the x300 series to get a Kawasaki engine and the mulching switch?
So the best way to go would be with an X350 with a 42" deck and then you could go with either the manual or electric mulch control option. The manual mulch control option will have a lever on the deck to open and close the discharge chute whereas if you go with the electrical it will be more expensive.
@@WesternEquipment Also, electric motors and water when washing don't mix well 🤣
@@WesternEquipment Well, bought somethin. They had X370s on sale for 300 bucks off and 400 bucks for my LT155. Sprung for the manual mulch control. Thought the manual would be a better investment because I felt like the motor option would probably fail for one reason or another. Should be delivered on Monday.
Thanks for the help!
@@Robsbrd99 If you dont mind me asking whatd the x370 run ya$?
@@ciphercode2298 $4,200. They had a begging of the year sale. Plus I got 400 bucks off in trade with my LT155. It is a wonderful machine. Ran all summer and enjoying muching up the leaves. Absolutely no problems
Do you by chance have a part # for that seat or a price? I have a 2016 X350 and this one looks a lot more comfortable.
The part number is AUC17180 but it looks like they are not orderable yet from John Deere. Check back with us at west-equip.com/parts in about a month and I believe we should be able to get you fixed up with one! Thanks for watching!
@@WesternEquipment Thank You!!
@Adam Calhoun intro
Good song! Thanks for watching!
Excellent video!
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Just bought this today. Im really excited to use it. Thank you so much for this guide!!!
did you ever think about doing a video on what to do about spinning tires on a 100 series mower? ruclips.net/video/yZ4bON-RZsg/видео.html putting lugs on a lawn tractor is pretty extreme. most people with a nice lawn won't want to do that
No I had not but this is interesting and I will see if I can get something figured out on this. Thank you and thanks for watching!
9:31 eek a mouse!
Ha ha. Good catch! Sometimes you end up with more friends than you bargained for.
Well I am sorry to hear of your bad experience , but thank you for the feedback and for watching!
