Its amazing how much Ahola accomplished in such a short career as a Strongman. Dude only competed for 4-5 years, and yet was able to win a ton of competitions, including WSM twice. I still think he could have one it 2-3 more times had he not stopped.

Definitely not. He knew this too just like Mariusz did after the 2008 year.

@@hydro.pl.27Why couldn't he have beaten Virtannen, Karlsen, then Marius in his first and/or 2nd winning years at least?

Jouko Ahola was very consistent. Unlike the others who were good in some events, but not good (or even bad) in other events. Jouko Ahola was very good in every events, though he was not always the best, but at least he finished in top 3. And he did 3rd place once, 2nd four times, and 1st once. He only finished 5th once.

Jouko was my , is, my favorite. He was always in the top. I thought he won 2 WSM titles? He's won 97 and 99 , finished 2nd in 98... 96-2002 were so tight and my favorite years. Maybe not because of the "competition" itself but because it's when I began lifting heavy, those WSM years motivated me. I've been watching it since the last 70's as a child with my dad, but in the late 90's... I trained HARD because of WSM alone and it got me what I've earned in track and field and highland games.

Since Shaw we haven't seen a recent champion winning it more than once. But who knows? Maybe Martins, maybe Novikov, perhaps Tom...

Back when I was younger, I remember the "worlds strongest" competitions always seemed to be against bodybuilders, powerlifters, pro football players and then THROWERS (track and field).... I remember Brian Oldfield beating all of them, handily. Now it's amazing to see the "hybrid" of athlete that has arisen. It's a powerlifter core, who can do Olympic lifting. What I noticed was the powerlifters would gas out, or be stronger overall but not able to apply it as efficiently in the "timed" or distance movements. The Olympic lifters would typically win... because they could use MORE of their power for longer periods of time.
It's an awesome thing to watch.
Jouko Ahola was always my "favorite". His look and power I always felts was unmatched. I wanted to be like him. I'm not. HAHAHAHAH.
Bill Kaz, of course, to me, is the living embodiment of what the "worlds strongest man" would look like and act like, he was a hoot to watch and listen to. Now there is a different class to the competitors altogether, aside from a few, all the athletes now, just, wow, I can't comprehend the weights they're moving.
