    Adisham Bungalow
Adisham Hall, commonly referred to as Adisham Bungalow, is a distinguished country residence located near Haputale in Sri Lanka's Badulla District. Currently, it serves as the Adisham Monastery, home to a community of the St. Sylvester congregation.
Constructed in 1931, this impressive estate was built by Sir Thomas Villiers, an English aristocrat and planter. Sir Thomas was the former Chairman of George Steuart Co., a Colombo-based trading and estate agency. He was also the grandson of Lord John Russell and a descendant of the Dukes of Bedford. The design of Adisham Hall, crafted by architects R. Booth and F. Webster, features Tudor and Jacobean architectural elements and was set on a 10-acre (40,000 m²) plot of land. The property became a notable venue for high-profile guests until Sir Thomas retired. After his retirement, it was sold to Sedawatte Mills and eventually acquired by the Roman Catholic Church in 1961, which transformed it into a monastery. The building is well-maintained, preserving its original furnishings and decor, and is open for public visits.
Sir Thomas Villiers remained actively engaged with the directors of George Steuart Co. throughout his life. In the 1950s, he advocated for the introduction of weekly wages in Ceylon in a letter to the Wages Commission. Sir Thomas passed away on December 21, 1959, and his funeral was held at St. Paul’s Knightsbridge, with cremation at Pulury Vale. Lady Villiers also passed away in London in 1964.
Though the Villiers family’s time in Ceylon came to an end, their legacy endures through the Adisham Bungalow. Sir Thomas envisioned his dream retreat while serving as Chairman of George Steuarts. He chose a serene location in Haputale, surrounded by the picturesque Tangamalai forest, also known as the Golden Hills. Despite the challenges posed by the land’s 5,000-foot elevation, Sir Thomas proceeded with construction, including carving a road through the forest to access the site. From this vantage point, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, including Totapolakanda, Hakgala, Piduruthalagala, the Uda Pussellawa range, Diyatalawa Army Camp, and Namunukula, stretching far into the distance. The estate encompasses ten acres of land that was once part of a forest reserve, with site preparation beginning in 1929.
Adisham Bungalow remains a magnificent stone mansion, elegantly situated and offering tranquil surroundings. It is a must-visit destination for travelers seeking a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
