  • Kuzushi, Gathering, is fundamental to classical Kenjutsu. Since all movement in Classical Koryu is based on Kenjutsu it is essential to understand and learn how to unbalance/gather an opponent. These movements and relationships are not from normal movement. Pushing, levering, flexing etc. are not what is being demonstrated here and will preclude your ability to perform these movements successfully. Learning to become one with your body, then one with your sword and eventually one with your opponent is a very different journey. Keep your mind and body calm and sensitive. At the beginning level use the kinetic energy of your body and let it move through you and out into your sword and opponent. This means you must be extremely relaxed and sensitive. You are not generating energy, you are releasing and directing it. The Uchidachi is not countering however he is also not cooperating. The energy transfer is either correct or not. If the training is done properly both Shidachi and Uchidachi will know that the transfer was done correctly.

You'll never know how much we appreciate these, Mr. Williams. For those of us who are to far away too personally train with you, these explanations are invaluable.

Absolutely agree with mkultrafication. I live in the middle of nowhere, so things that are rather niche like Kenjutsu/Iaido are not available. I know I'll never be able to develop these skills properly alone, but for now as my only option videos like this are deeply appreciated. Thank you!

I was lucky to get it first-hand. I only learned the rolls and falls and other techniques at seminars from Don. It really is like osmosis. I tried to empty my plate, but once you've experienced a Bugatti everything else is a Prius. lol ok, systema psychic stuff is cool and Salahuddin muhammad3251 his art is the closest to Yanagi Ryu I've seen. Cheers.
