Aww, thank you so much for the shout out! I wish I was as talented at making videos as you so I could give Chinese animation the level of quality content it deserves. But I'm so thankful to you for making this incredible video which blew my mind as well. I hope you don't mind how much me and other donghua fans have begged you to make a video like this in the past xD. We just knew you would create a masterpiece like this and I can't wait to see your next one on any topic.

As an animator as well as Chinese expat you hit the nail on the head about the freaking Chinese Boomer parents- swear to God those squares in general are the worst. I was really lucky to have parents who didn't...get it per se, but because they have faith in me they were willing to appreciate the medium from my perspective.
But the rest of their generation? Their friends? Holy crap, the casual distain for the medium as "kiddie shit" (while they fixate over meaningless status symbols like XO Hennesey, smart phones, and luxury Brands) is infuriating. I am glad that the younger generations in China are finally beginning to believe in the storytelling potential of animation as a medium

When I was still a child (a white kid in canada), my mom bought a beat-up VHS copy of an english-dubbed Nezha at a yard sale. I watched it many times when I was young because of it's striking and unique visual style, I had no idea until I was an adult was a culturally important film it was to Chinese people. The last time I was exposed to Chinese animation was a few years ago when I was visiting my nephew's grandparents in Beijing where they were letting him watch the low-budget toddler shows mentioned in the video. I am glad to see that high quality animation with its own unique Chinese style is being produced now.

I spent a year living and studying in Chengdu, China, which was really quite a defining time in my life for me. Keep on producing excellent quality content like this, and inspiring interest in Chinese language, history, culture, society, etc. That's so important right now, since there is quite a large amount of people in the U.S. that know so little of China, with much of their prejudices stemming from stereotypical depictions in Western tv/movies and the depictions of China in the news. Chinese animation has such a rich history even though it's been a very troubled road for it. 2015, 2017 and 2019 were such huge years for it's progress with Monkey King, King's Avatar and NeZha capturing so much more attention around the world. It looks like 2020 will be even moreso with Jiang ZiYa, the spiritual successor to NeZha, 2 brand new animations using the traditional Ink Wash animation technique and more seasonal series than any year before. Gives me the chill watching the meticulous presentation of key moments n iconography n comparisons in your journey to forgive yourself for giving up hope towards the industry once upon a time. I too share that loss hope - partly due to our country's dramatic history with China...

As a westerner, I can say that every clip you presented here depicts such beauty in design that I’ve not seen even in Disney films before nor in any American animation with the exception being the films produced by Laika Studios. Everything else here in the states is produced solely for money and not for love of art. It’s a shame but this video gives me ample reason to seek these films herein and to expand my knowledge of animation and cultures less known to me. I had no idea of these films and so glad I watched your presentation. Thank you!

I wholeheartedly disagree. Just watch Up, and Wall-E. Those two movies were a risk and are still visually beautiful. Look at the opening of Lion King and tell me it doesn't have any aesthetic value. It's true that most movies have a commercial intent, this movies cost millions of dollars of course they need the money, but it's unfair to say that within those studios there aren't passionate people that aren't willing to express their passions in the medium.

As a Singaporean passionate about animated movies from across the world (particularly Asian animation), your video was a turn eye-opener into the history of Chinese animation. It's truly one of my most favourite video essays on YT. I would like to add some of my opinions on Chinese animation, particularly on Chinese animated movies.
First off, one of the biggest issues in the Chinese animation industry is how the general population perceive Chinese animation. I feel like people need to change their perception that animation is just for kids (and it's a global issue). Sure, I don't have much hate towards popular Chinese kids cartoon series such as Pleasant Goat and Boonie Bears, but Chinese animation is more than just these two. You have to search deeper to find some hidden gems in the rough.
Secondly, I feel the Chinese animation industry, especially with the rise in Donghua, will definitely grow. It's just a matter of the quality of Donghua and Chinese animation films, not just quantity. From recent hits such as Ne Zha, White Snake, Jiang Ziya and (to a certain extent) Spycies, they are hitting the mark.
Lastly, regarding weternised Chinese animated movies (where Chinese studios work with overseas studios to produce animated movies) that you did not mention in the video, one big issue is that most do not feel like animated movies made in China. Sure, there are the rare moments where these movies (such as Abominable, Spycies, Rock Dog, Mosley (which counts because it's animated in China even though it's a New Zealand animated movie) and Over the Moon) managed to be on the range of decent to fantastic, but I feel the animation studios are putting the eggs into the wrong basket. They cannot imitate the western animation. They need to find their voice and identity, which you highlighted in your video. The only reason why China outsouced their animation is because it's much cheaper to animate movies in China.
I feel like we are awakening a sleeping giant in Chinese animation. This is no longer about profiting in the industry; this is about showcasing the best that Chinese animation has to offer. However, if there is a lack of interest and funding, and there is still a wrong perception on Chinese animation, then the development will be stunted. In conclusion, it's up to the many Chinese animation studios to decide where they would want to go, but I wish them all the best in upholding the true spirit of Chinese animation.

What a beautiful video. I'm not very knowledgable about full feature animation films from china but I do like the style. What I trully want to see though (a bit willfully I admit) would be for chinese animation to move beyond the traditional setting. To move beyond Journey to the west, 3 kingdom romance and the likes. This adherence to the setting fells like chinese animation is constantly retreading it's heritage without getting away from it. Do you see what I mean? Or maybe it's me and I have not seen enough and I'm spouting nonsense (I just want Lord Of The Mysteries by Cuttlefish That Loves Diving to be adapted 😊)

Born after 95s,but I grew up with more than 20 well made Chinese animations. I don’t understand why you don’t mention them. 蓝猫淘气3000问、海尔兄弟、围棋少年、小虎还乡、舒克贝塔、葫芦娃、小神仙和小仙女、鸭子侦探、蓝皮鼠和大脸猫、哪吒传奇、西游记, etc. The dark age is not as dark as you described.

This video it really impressed me,i’m never feel so touched. That’s because i’m always wondered ”why there aren’t Chinese production (animation) that also leave the mark on westerns colture”? I’m starting to study animation and i really i hope that i could contribute for the chinese animation development
