Plenty of people were interested in this. I was doing a bit of down-sizing and auctioned most of my gear. I know lots of you guys were very happy to have ended up with some piece of kit or other that you’d heard on certain recordings. It makes me feel good that everything from small tambourines to whole kits went to loving homes. Of course, I kept a small Tama Starclassic set for myself to tinker on, when the spirit moves. Graham Russell Drums and I spent a lot of time organising, cataloguing and signing, and generally preparing for the sale. Thanks Graham! #billbrufordsearthworks
"I'm not good at concerts, if it's terrible I want to leave, and if it's brilliant I want to play" love that quote.
i am in the exact same position, its no fun basically. but allot of people try to increase prestige novadays pretending to be behind it still(musicians) as if nothing has happened. And its also misunderstood as an ego thing its not, its a "sensitivity didnt tell me about the after effects of exsessive writing and listening of music" thing.. I absolutely prefer playing over listening, more and more.
This video confirms it for me, Bill Bruford, class act, class human being
I can just see Danny Carrey when he goes to play with Tool or Volto, and is like, "Hey guys! This is the Bill Bruford kit!!" 💩🥁
I can just see and have seen Danny Carrey being an obnoxious drunk too many times at an LA jazz club. Unacceptable and disgusting behavior. 🖕🏼
But at the very least he's an incredible drummer. Definitely the best of the modern times
I bought Bill's smallest brass square. He signed it; Bill is a class act.
It sounds just like the "ding" in Fracture, but there's no way to verify that.
Watching vids of Bill with K Crimson playing Thela Hun Gingeet live is one of life's simple pleasures these days.
I met this Mastermind on his last clinic tour in 09, in Toronto, a true gentleman , we even stopped for tea, lol.
I remember reading an article about Bill integrating chordal structures of the Simmons with acoustic drumming rhythms. And the interviewer actually brought this up to Max Roach and Max's statement was, 'There's alot of drummers that are doing great things. But that Bruford, he's an innovator.' Well said.
So nice to learn that someone so admired for years is a such decent person. Especially in this business...
BB, you are my all time favorite drummer. Saw you with YES, KC (met you back stage there in SF), and one of my all time favorite shows ever, BRUFORD in Berkely CA. The opening act "Surface Music" was absolutely hilarious.
Bill has an incredible intellect and can articulate that verbally..
Agreed Bill, Gavin Harrison one of the best, most interesting drummers of the day. And to get that compliment from Mr Bruford, wow…..
For me those 2 have done a tremendous job of developing a unique style, but also one of musicality that most drummers do not achieve
Many years ago, I sold my canary yellow Yamaha 9000 and cymbals to Graham. It hurt to let it go but the cash really helped me out at the time. If I was to buy another kit I'd definitely go to Graham. The setup he has is amazing.
Hope the sale goes great and thanks for all the wonderful stories and info.
Just can't say how much I love Bill, excuse me Mr. Bruford. Reading endless mag's makes one feel him a friend, even a friendly family member. Needless to say he has been a fantastic influence on me and my expansion of equipment, especially midi gear. Thanks bill I wish I could afford your gear!!!! Thanks for all the education, you made me a better drummer.
Mr Bruford always comes across as a very modest person, intellectual about music. Reminds me somewhat of David Byrne in that respect. Had a listen to the Genesis the two mention in the video here. Really something. Tremendous energy, creativity. What do we have now? Coldplay dear me.
I'm amazed to see the Tama Bell Brass there. That's the one. The holy grail of rock snare drums. Wanted by many, usually just able to be rented by a few.
That yellow kit is absolutely gorgeous!
I had a ‘68 Mustang convertible that exact color…..warm, gorgeous
Psychologists say that those who choose yellow as their favorite are placid, sane, solid people - I’m proof that there are always exceptions
5:34 wow, Bill is great at Beatbox too! Naturally!! Shoulda sample his mouth drum. :)
Once again thank-you for another awesome interview Bill, it’s always wonderful listening to your history.
Adrian Belew has most of Bill's Tama Starclassic maple kit in Sunny Yellow.
Is funny how we have gotten older and the house is to big I have too many guitars ect.
I’m sending love & good vibes in the way we ment it 50 years ago
I have bill story I tell of something during the Buddy Rich thing.
I wish I had seen this two years ago I’m a guitar player but I’d buy something
I’m divorced kid grown I could do it.
Have a drum head or cymbal on my wall.
Love to Bill you are a inspiration to me in many many ways
✌🏻
I know nothing about drumming, but I do know that when I first heard 'Fragile', I sat up and went, 'Those drums... No-one plays like that!'
King Crimson now reminds me of Fleetwood Mac after they got rid of Lindsey Buckingham, they needed two guitarists to replace him. King Crimson now has 3 drummers to replace Bill Bruford.
Nobody replaced Bill.
Nobody can replace Pat.
Nobody can replace Gavin.
Nobody can replace Bill (RIP).
Nobody can replace Jeremy.
Absolutely nobody ever replaced Michael Giles.
My first concert - Crimson with Bill!!
Bill Thank you for posting this! Fellow nerd.
-Danny Carey
Bill: Danny Who?
There's lot of valuable advice here.
It should go into the museum of arts , no one is good enough to have Mr. Brufords eqipment except for Mr.Bruford and how about Bruford giving clinics, yeah!!!
This is a wonderful chat.
..."One more red nightmare" : so groovy..! 👍
I definitely agree, Gavin Harrison is the best out there, that guy is just amazing!
Love those yellow MIJ Starclassics!
Wow, great show. There are three drummers I’ve been a huge fan of since I started listening to music properly over 40 years ago. Neal
Peart, Mike Portnoy and Bill. This was just so enjoyable and informative.
You're absolutely right!
Those signatures are going to add a lot of value
Love the nod to Gavin Harrison. Couldn't agree with their assessments of him more.
Wonderful.
Good stuff
This is interesting.
I lived near red rocks, in Morrison CO up until last May.
1 megabyte!! My god that’s soooo many bytes.
Where are all the rototoms? My abiding memory of the Bruford sound, is that first UK studio album 'In the dead of night'.
A guy I know secured a signed Paiste swish cymbal from this sale. He's still not revealed how much he bid but I get the impression it was worth every penny. He has played on it twice, maybe....
I always thought the trashy sound on One More Red Nightmare was electronic.
I have a question for drummers, how much does just the colour of the drums mean when picking a kit or components? I met somebody who was car shopping and they said they ONLY cared about the colour. I'm assuming you can paint them, I can't decide if I like those yellow ones or not. Zildjan came from the US, but Sabian would have been a little cheaper coming from right near here in New Brunswick Canada.
Question, I was just wondering if the one yellow Simmons pad was sold as part of the yellow Tama's, or if it is still availabe and up for sale?
dear mr bruford,
a kind suggestion: instead of talking gear (which is, of course, interesting, don´t get me wrong), you should contemplate getting back in the studio/on stage, together with, let´s say, django bates. give him a call in bern/switzerland and ask him to join you, like w/borstlap. we, your fans, miss you as an *artist*, not as a "legacy curator". ask stuart nicholson or michael rusenberg to do it, in exchange for.. i don´t know.
kind regards
Personally, I'm glad Mr. Bruford is taking it easy and enjoying his golden years; he's more than earned it. Too many musicians have forced themselves to keep going when they no longer enjoy or excel at the job, and after what happened to Keith Emerson in particular it's hard to feel anything but happy for elderly musicians who have opted to step down, rest on their laurels, and enjoy their personal life instead of going back into the high-stress zone over and over until they die.
@@AssociationAdmirer fair enough.
I actually went to a Bruford/Simmons workshop-- the kit sounded Awful,,, Awful. So yeah,,, shit happens,,, BuT Bill did play a fantastic single stroke roll -- the kit sounded like a very muffled choo choo train.
