Scottish countryside is unbelievably beautiful. And don't ever be afraid to go anywhere in Scotland. People will chat away and help you. Especially in the highlands and islands. When he mentions Scottish football, the reason for the tension in the room (which he acknowledges) is that this was filmed in Glasgow and the football rivalry in Glasgow is intense to put it mildly. I won't bore you with a longwinded explanation as to why that is the case but just take it from me there is nothing in American sports that comes remotely close to the intensity of the rivalry between Celtic/rangers (commonly referred to as "The old firm" ) in Scotland. It is a VERY touchy subject for any public figure to bring up, let alone a comedian.
Well, not just that, the tension really came from the time this was filmed. Rangers had just declared bankruptcy and been relegated down to the lowest level of Scottish football as a result. Lots of people probably thought he was gonna make jokes about that and that would divide the room haha. He is a Celtic fan after all, so is Billy Connolly. All the funny Glaswegians lol
Lets be honest nothing in American sports comes remotely close to the intensity of the rivalry between Crystal Palace and Brighton let alone Celtic/Rangers.
As a Londoner who used to be a long distance delivery driver, I loved going to Scotland, stunning, beautiful scenery. I also love the Scot's as they are proud, tough, down to earth people, similar to a lot of Londoners. I find the media make up a lot of the supposed anamosity between the English and the Scot's, in my experience it's mainly friendly banter and piss taking. Personally, I hope Scotland always remains part of the UK.✌️

1) The "old firm" game is when the two Glasgow teams, Celtic and Rangers, play each other. It is a famously intense rivalry. (Kevin is a fan of Celtic.) 2) The venue in the SECC in Glasgow. This was filmed in 2012 in the SECC ( Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre) which held about 10,000 or thereabouts. Some of the references have dated now. "The Pope's a Bundesliga man" is a reference to the fact that the Pope at that time was a German (Pope Benedict XVI). The "Bundesliga" is the German equivalent of the "Premier League" The reason for the "Feel the tension in the room" line is that earlier in 2012 Rangers Football Club had suffered some erm "financial difficulties" shall we say and owed the UK tax man in excess of £100 million as well as many other parties (including a face painter!) and to bring this up in front of a Glasgow audience (of whom probably 50% support rangers) would honestly be like bringing up '9/11' to a New York Audience in 2002.
