  • Canon just released a new camera and I wanted to share my thoughts on this camera, the EOS R5C from a perspective of someone who shoots on both the R5/R6 platform and cinema cameras.

    You totally get this camera. You've reached all the same conclusions I have about the R5C. So glad to finally see someone that articulates all the reasons why it is what it is. I would add that by re-using the R5 body/chassis instead of designing and building the R5C from the ground up, it eliminates a lot of the R&D needed and new tooling needed for manufacturing, which kept the cost of the R5C lower than many expected and out much sooner into our hands. Great job.

      Yep, and they are already making parts. That’s a big deal. I’d much rather sacrifice a full sized HDMI port for cheaper prices and more units sooner.

    Spot on, Tony. You’re one of the few people talking good sense about the R5C, and your supply chain reasoning makes a lot of sense. I hope it sells well and encourages Canon to keep going down this path cause it’s a HUGE deal. I’m definitely interested in getting one after held off on the R5. That last point you made about the cine look of the footage is a very important one for me too, so I guess we’ll see! Awesome video!

      Yea, regardless though, I’m really really excited for this camera and so thankful canon is trying new things. I know a lot of people look down, but wow, that was such a brilliant idea to add the Cine ecosystem. Now let’s see how that footage looks!!

    Well explained!! Many youtubers has just surface knowledge. I think it’s a fantastic camera. Personally I would have preferred same form factor but with a sensor from R6. I also think raw LT is so exciting. I just got an R5 and I love it.

    Tony you are so right, it’s popular to hate on canon no matter what they do.
    Most of that hate comes from Sony fanboys.
    This camera is gonna be huge I feel, I also have the r5 and r6 but man I can see me picking this up once it’s released as it truly looks to be the camera that can do it all and at that price point,
    That’s a no brainer.

    Wow, it is just like you read mi mind, how is that people still don't realize why Canon did it this way? Instead of making a new design of a camera which would have hike the price way up,
    instead they just re-used a proven amazing camera and added the cinema video operating system with all the good stuff that come with it, kept the same full sensor,
    added an active cooling, added multifunction hot shoe for better audio gear and yes, IBIS was removed, but professionals video camera don't have it since they get mounted on gimbals to get a better stabilized system, then again this is geared to a different market than the R5 which is a photo beast first and good options for video second.. Great video and good job explaining what people need to understand about this new Canon release.

    Great video! Thank you Tony. The more I shoot video, and the more I edit, the more I realise the drawbacks of hybrid. Really keen to get waveforms. I don't need the C70 (yet) in terms of say ports and ND. I'm curious about Super 35 vs Full Frame, is FF going to be better or worse?!

    • @TonyMellinger
      @TonyMellinger  2 года назад +1

      FF is almost always better as far as framing, and depth of field, but super 35 has it’s advantages too. For one thing, you have more reach on a super 35. I love that on the R5C you can shoot in FF, Super 35 or even super 16. Lots of options there for great shots

    I would really like the switch to turn off IBIS in the R5, R6, and R3 during video without turning off lens stabilization.
    As many of us need to request Canon to enable that for us as possible.

    It’s not the body that limits 8k60 it’s the batteries.
    If you use an external power supply like a power bank your fine, 8k 60 then has all functionality.
    Just so people understand a power bank is no bigger than your cell phone, so it’s not a big deal.
    I am willing to bet you will see some sort of add on that looks like a extended grip but has a larger capacity battery that will power it that way.

    • @TonyMellinger
      @TonyMellinger  2 года назад +1

      Yes totally agree with you. Hopefully that connection can come through the usbc connection as well. Im certain there will be body grips that help power the camera. It’s crazy the bottle neck is there just isn’t enough power to power the lens 😂 that’s a lot of of juice!

      @@TonyMellinger There is a few, but you can also do the test yourself! Attach a lens(50 mm, don’t matter but I did mine with a 50, I’m sure any lens can do) keep the lens cap on and in clog and clog 3 start from from the L to the indicated and you can see the clean up 🧼 in the relative log setting at the ISO I noted 400/1600 and 800/3200! Canon is a company that doesn’t really mention certain important things they often sometimes the focus on the wrong 😑 marketing strategies, you know this you shoot canon everything, Dual ISO is a sensor technology and the R5 and R5c share the same sensor! Only because it’s a “cinema camera” now canon gives you control over the choice of utilizing it

    Nope. The C70 AF is a huge drop off from the R5/R6. The power requirements diminish the value as a run and gun camera. Using the tascam unit and an external monitor will require a cage. I already have a C70 and use it with batteries. Was hoping this could be a b-cam with better AF. So for me, it’s a no go.

    • @TonyMellinger

    How do you find the autofocus for run and gun videography? As in constantly changing scenarios where I’m the only videographer.
    And does the AF work in 120fps?

    • @TonyMellinger
      @TonyMellinger  Год назад

      AF works with 120. As far as finding AF, make sure you’re on the latest firmware. It’s gotten much better. When I’m in a run and gun scenario, I just tap the back of the camera to pull focus. You can make sure your settings in the AF settings are to stick on the subject and ignore distractions. You can also pause the AF in the bottom right if you and your subject stop loving. I’ll use that frequently as well

    Great video. Just two questions:
    why do you think it is not a big disadvantage on the R5C to have dual pixel 1 for video like the C70 and not version 2 like in the R5? I don't really understand why they made this choice ... also I wanted to ask you, is it possible to completely disable IBIS on the R6 by attaching non-IS EF lenses? I don't want IBIS.
    I wanted to buy R5C for photos and videos but AF tracking is too important for me... do you recommend me to go on an R6? It's still a good choice for video? Thank you!

    • @TonyMellinger
      @TonyMellinger  2 года назад +1

      A couple things in there, the R5C still has the same autofocus for photos as the R6 or R5, when you go into video mode, the R5C has the same focus system as the c70, which in my opinion is different, but just as good. I feel like it’s more stable for video, which photos, the being erratic is alright, but there’s times when it’s just too finicky and in video, the c70 always is locked on or it pauses AF, which I really love. As far as the R6, you can always turn off IBIS, but when you turn off IBIS, if the lens has stabilization, it also turns off that as well.

      @@TonyMellinger thanks for your reply. Actually I am using 5DIV and 6D and I have two options:
      1) Buy R6 and use it with 5DIV (both photo and video) waiting for a better AF tracking C70II
      2) Buy C70 (for video) and continue using 5DIV and 6D for photos.
      What do you recommend me? Thank you!

    • @TonyMellinger
      @TonyMellinger  2 года назад

      @@paolocavanna5965 what kind of videos do you want to do? The c70 is much stronger for video than the R6, but the R6 can hold it’s own with certain types of video. If you need something to record long periods of time, the c70 is great. Also, the new firmware update lets you shoot raw on the c70, which is pretty incredible. If you’re just doing RUclips style videos, which some Broll, the R6 is plenty good enough for you.

      @@TonyMellinger I film some short interviews, and many videos in industrial contexts, such as the presentation of a new product to the sales force (very similar to small events), or some corporate of small companies in which the machinery is seen working to produce the finished product. in show room and so on. So far I have always filmed with the 5DIV and I wanted to combine it with something more performing. From what I've read, the R5C seems to me inferior to the C70 for the same price (nd filters, hdmi, dynamic range, same af), so between the two I think the C70 is better. I think that for my needs the race should be between the C70 and the R6, and I would like to understand if R6 is enough for me. Thanks for help, really appreciated.

      That’s a great question. I’m not really sure. At some point it has to a little, it’s been out for almost “2 years” ish… we may not see a significant drop though until an actual replacement version. The R5C is a different camera with a much different purpose. Who knows.
