Seems like you got treated to some gems!!! I am so curious to hear your thoughts on The Vanished Birds, I absolutely loved that one and can't wait to get to Spear now. It almost starts out feeling a bit like a collection of interconnected short stories, but then it all weaves together so beautifully. Jimenez is a masterful storyteller!! And heck yes for those Greenbone and Locked Tomb beauties! 🤩
As for Susan Cooper's books, I think (if I remember correctly) the first one was supposed to be a standalone, and it works like a prequel because it's set some time before the events of the second book and follows different characters. I'm not even sure they're for the same age range. I was confused too, so I looked into it. Still haven't read them, though I've been meaning for a long time! I might wait to hear your opinion first🙂
Nice book haul there Sarah, plenty of good books to get stuck into. I've read quite a lot of Holly Black's books and enjoyed them, I will be reading Book of Night sometime soon. One of my sons got me the Green Bone Saga for Christmas, so I'm looking forward to getting into that also. I think I'll add Never Whistle At Night to my wish list as it sounds really interesting.
Great book haul!!! The Dark is Rising series was one of my absolute favourites as a child and I have read it to my children too. I hope you enjoy it!! Its definitely written in an older style ( which I really love) and it's so atmospheric!! Happy reading 📚
Oh my gosh, the bookmark! What a fantastic gift! I think this will be something I encourage my kids to make me for my birthday. I couldn't quite tell, but is the font color on Harrow the Ninth a shiny light blue? I've not read any of those books, but that Harrow cover looks awesome.
Loved this varied haul! I also read the first 4 Malazan books in the mmpbs but after I sought out the trade paperbacks cuz I was getting tired of the small print not spaced out and close to the spine. It’s kind of fun though to deal with that along with those deep texts though!
To reset your expectations, The Vanished Birds is more linear (in comparison) in its storytelling format, and it's a sci-fi space opera as opposed to an epic fantasy. Never Whistle at Night is, dare I say, a perfect anthology! I loved every single story (apart from Rebecca Roanhorse's story, which I actively hated, but we don't have to talk about that!), and it made me so excited to read more from so many authors included in that anthology! I can't remember if I asked you this already, but have you read John Steinbeck's unfinished Arthurian retelling?
Lots of great books in your future. I’m looking forward to starting The Art Thief soon. That illustrated history of fantasy book sounds intriguing. Never Whistle at Night is one I really enjoyed. Happy reading!
I know so many who loved Susan Cooper. For whatever reason they weren't on my radar as a kid. Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I liked Vanished Birds even more than Spear Cuts Through Water. I'm still deciding on some Xmas/bday book hauls myself.
You need to read Swan Song ASAP,it's a masterpiece, maybe the best book I've ever read,it was my Book of the Year last year. Although it's long, you don't feel, you fly through it.
We've come a long way from studying pediatrics sitting in line for the midnight premiere of The Avengers! Hope you get the hit of nostalgia it gave me :)
@TheBookCure Seeing you hold Swan Song up in a video and talk about it seriously made me so happy I was smiling ear to ear. 😁 Can't wait for you to read it, but I'm not going to push it or overhype it. I'll let you get to it when you get to it and let the book speak for itself. 😏
What a great haul Sarah! Murtagh is on my list to read. Really curious to see what he does with a new story in that world. I’ve heard some good things about Holly Black. Green Bone Saga is so good!

The Stand is one of my favourite King books so I’m very interested what you think of Sean Song!
Hopefully it’ll be as good as everyone says!
Kyle was talking about that MCU nonfiction work recently. I am planning to pick that up as well.
