In this video, I play a 10-minute chess game in the lichess.org's Hourly Rapid Arena. After a strange opening, my opponent played flawlessly and it became clear from post-game analysis that nearly every move matched Stockfish's top choice. However, I tried to fight and use the clock as a weapon.
Analyze the game here: lichess.org/98...
Shortly after this game, I received a rating refund and my opponent's account has since been closed.

actually to be technical it could actually help a real chess player to see how to beat a master. in no way am I condoning cheating at all. but look at all sides to why something is done and maybe you can learn from POS people. when someone cheats I try to think of it as a free stockfish training session. in today's world. soon we will only be playing against bots. and POS people. truth is a dying race.
Most likely, this cheater did know how to play the game, he just wasn't able to play particulary well, so that made him angry.
@@legrandliseurtri7495 this whole cheating bs has gotten out of hand. no more morals left.
I wouldn’t assume this cheater will analyse the computers moves in order to learn how to be a better player during the game. They simply play the strongest move without thought with the aim to win.
Post analysis of games you lose is sufficient for improving, not a tournament setting. If there was an argument to spin cheating into “technically” being morally sound, the cheater should still resign rather than go for mate. Fat chance of seeing that happen though.

Imagine being an actual grandmaster starting from scratch on a chess platform and getting banned for playing too good
Even so, there are some moves that are very human-like/computer-like that's why that problem never happens.
Nah, this one is definitely using stockfish , the time it takes for him to move in the start and the end has a major shift in attitude , most likely is he tried to look “human” in the first few minutes but then completely threw it of the board when his time is closing in. Second is the opening , he has a questionable (try to france) opening, then had a inhuman move with the rook , to prevent repetition.
Grandmasters don't take at 10 seconds for every move. Some of them are obvious and should take less than 1 second. This guy is obviously using engine because he's taking 10 seconds even with the obvious moves and he didn't know how to finish off at time scramble.

Na3 is a move that stockfish plays in some french advance lines. I immediately felt like this is a computer playing.
Perhaps, but that's not conclusive. For example Na3 in the Advance French is a line that I learnt very early in my chess career from a dusty old book. That's an old concept.
When I was new to chess, I used to start with Na3
I mean Na3 avoids getting the Knight getting attacked by pawns so it is understandable I think?
1:33 Funny that. Because until recently people used to go to bed when the sun set, we don't really have a greeting when meeting someone at 1am. "Good night" is a farewell, not a greeting. and "good evening" only applies to evenings, not nights.
This is a win to be proud of, you fought really well. Fascinating to watch both sides find resources right to the end, even if one side is a computer.
Opponent: *moves into a open file* Erric: "wow that was nifty move"
That's the fun thing about engine moves. They look both unnatural and completely logical, to the point of seeming obvious.
I'm average chess player and played this guy which was losing and I was up material. Then suddenly he started to play very accurate move and lost to him. I was never salty about it coz at least in my mind I thought, "hey this guy cheated to beat me in chess".
Not necessarily a cheater. I myself was on the both ends here: sometimes you get too cocky when up the material and can easily miss an opportunity window that your opponent can use for their advantage.
P.S. I am just an amateur below 1500 lichess points in rapid, so this might not be correct in higher-rated games.
David Van Voorhis sometimes people say “this guy” when they mean they’re talking about a story. Like for example. “Like one time *this guy* showed up at my house” etc

Followed along with Stockfish. That weird Na3 move and the e7 move at the end were the only ones played that weren't one of the top two Stockfish moves. You only played (I think) two or three that weren't top 2.
His computer must be really shitty to need Stockfish to calculate for 10-20 seconds every time and end up flagging. My computer found the move he was going to play within 1-2 seconds.
Taking 10 seconds to move doesnt mean he has a shit computer. Engine usually analyzes moves for a certain amount of time before picking the top move regardless the position. Thats why time usage is constant.
@@kenmendoza6932 Engines can spit out great moves in fraction of a second, those moves are more than enough to beat any human. They would just lose against the same engine if it had more time per move. Engines analyze against themselves, they dont know anything about human play or what the players are actually doing or their ideas.
They might have been using an analysis game on another tab so switching between tabs and manually putting in moves may have made it slower
This may not have anything to do with either the computer or the engine. They may be knowing so little about chess that they don't know which moves are natural and which require thought, and so they try to keep the time consistent in an attempt to not raise suspicion. It has the exact opposite effect of what's intended, but that just reinforces the notion that they are stupid.

I have starting trying to learn more of chess, I feel like I'm barely playing at a 1000 right now, the problem is that a computer tells me what is and isn't a good move, but not why.. I'm watching more top players and hoping they give some insight into moves, and you certainly do. Much appreciated. I follow Ludvig Hammer too but he tends to trail off into mumbling when he concentrates haha
Yeah I have the same issue. When it tells me I made a blunder and look it's pretty obvious but when I do an okay move and it tells me another move is better I usually can't tell why it's a better move unless it leads to material or a better position within a few moves. Eric and Levy has been pretty good, doesn't trail off as often as Ludvig does. Good luck fella 1000ish player.

These guys don't care or have any clue of what chess is. That's why they cheat, to get a cheap plessure of victory on false premisses. It's not even necesarry to look at the analysis to decide if he are cheating or not. Any player who are able to outplay an IM like that are also able to premove the final moves into checkmate.
@Filip Gasic he did make valid connections though. People who are computer cheaters probably struggle in the real world because they don't know what success feels like, they have to cut corners.

As much as I like lichess I've found myself playing elsewhere lately because of how rampant the cheaters are getting in the tournaments. Outside of the tournaments half the time I'm winning the opponent just runs their clock to 0 and all they do is a 10 minute temporary ban, so essentially nothing, about it.
I was salty and let my clock tick down a few times in the past. But now I force myself to resign even when it's frustrating, perhaps partly because some of my opponents did that too(but not many, I don't know if I'm lucky, but I rarely encounter cheaters or players like that).

There's no such thing as dirty flag. If you agree to a ten minute game, and you can't checkmate me in 10 minutes, you lose. If you don't like it, don't play 10 minutes.
If you're ahead in material, but way down on the clock, I'm no longer playing in a way to win material. I'm playing quickly and defensively to make sure you can't mate me. It's not fair to me if I'm considered "dirty" for playing with the rules we established right at the start.

2. Gain (dirty) ELO
1. a computer tells you what moves to do
2. you are a sad loser that nobody likes and have to rely to cheating in competitive games to get even small doses of happiness

Hey Eric, thanks for the video! I Just subscribed to your channel also. I admit I already cheated on online chess games, but I never had more than 1400 rating in all my entire life, because I never did it regularly, and when I did, I did it during the whole game, I mean, cheating all the moves, so I basically just crushed some people in those specific games... After playing other games online, and getting cheaters playing against me in games that I cared more about winning, I realized how frustrating it is to play against a opponent you just can't win. I'm glad I had that reflection about cheating, because I care more about winning and playing chess now that I don't cheat, and my rating is still pretty much the same. Also, the website made a really good job, by banning all my cheated accounts, since I had two of those...
Still, I think the website taught me a great lesson by banning me, cuz it was shocking as I've never been banned in other online games, and I hate people who still cheats nowadays...

I’m not sure exactly what the requirements are. They include beating (or possibly drawing, I don’t know) grandmasters in classical over the board tournaments. It’s extremely difficult to beat a grandmaster in classical and not everyone can do it. Eric has said he’s fine if he never achieves it.
me guessing a move that surprised Eric: I don't need an engine, I AM AN ENGINE!
How are you able to determine they are cheating?
Playing at a 99.9% accuracy while only taking 5 seconds per move consistently, not even Magnus carlsen can achieve this, so this guy is either the best player at chess in the world or hes a cheater
@@perpetual_suffering1458 also he took almost always the same time for the moves, like an engine
