Very smooth. Does the Warwick pickups filter some string clatter hitting the frets or do you use heavy compression or something else for the smooth tone?
It's all in the hands and the string action. Compression makes string noise louder. He's got his bass frequencies up to get more smooth low end and he's playing very cleanly on a properly set up instrument.
I appreciate the reply thanks. But I experience nasty string noises when playing through some amps and much less with others, while using the same hand technique. I've read many times that most bass recordings use some compression. I know it's hard to describe a good sound when it happens, and hard to diagnose a poor sound. If it was "all in the hands" we could just use the cheapest bass for all recordings.
Jonny Rochester Of course the bass is also important, but the experience and skill of the musician has a big influence, including the choice of the instrument and the tone you want to get. Compression has more influence on volume balance, you can try play with flatwounds strings, they deliver a cleaner sound. I have used flatwound on my fender to play reggae music. In this video the strings are the usual "round" type and the bass has a very good tone by itself.
sure would like to hear this re-done on one of those Tobias Growlers you have. I have tried to warm up to these German basses you are playing in this video, but just can't touch the Tobias in my estimation. Best to you from Bruce on the South Carolina coast.
