How to Store Fountain Pens

- I go over the reasons why you should store your fountain pens properly and show some options you can use to store your fountain pens. Some of these options are fountain pen cases, fountain pen rolls and fountain pen boxes.
The cigar box storage is by BamaPen. Here is his website: cigarboxpenstorage.wordpress.com/
For a fun take on cigar boxes for storage, check out Chris' video: ruclips.net/video/flPpnekx0GY/видео.html
Thank you for these links! My wife has commandeered my previous ink/pen storage box from walmart for her firearm.
So...that means I can buy a proper pen-box!
WOOHOO!!!!
Hope all is well on your end pen friend!
@@Detman101 Thank you! You can also try the DIY route too. I got some of my cigar boxes for like $5!
If I close my eyes I could easily meditate while listening to this. Charming as always and thank you for sharing.
I fall asleep sometimes when I try meditating hahaha! Maybe my vids are good sleep aids! Thank you for watching Jeff!
It has quickly become my favorite pen channel
I really liked that ending! "The best place to store in a pen is right there in your hand. You should use your pens."
Thanks! So true though, right?!
@@InkyRocks absolutely! They are made to be used, not just looked at!
Good timing on this one Alesa! I've been looking to expand my pen storage and I liked the Franklin-Christoph penvelope. BTW, you have a gift...who would have thought learning about dust destroying my stuff could be so entertaining!
hahaha! Thank you! What was really gross was reading about all the OTHER stuff in dust...
I love how you've combined your mineral knowledge with your pen knowledge! My pens (I have a decently small collection), usually live upright, in a pen case. I do have some sleeves for extra special pens (such as a gorgeous cherry blossom sailor ;) ) .... and on occasion I will display one on my desk if I'm doing a writing project or writing with it frequently! Amazing video- thanks!
Thank you. It's amazing how they overlap sometimes! I'll be doing an ink review on my IG next week that has actual turquoise in it! Upright in a pen case is probably the most logical solution. Also, I hope you like the clear feed on that pen--not many on Sailors!
Inky.Rocks yes!!! The clear feed is incredible! I love how you can see the ink!
Quartz, in dust, who new! Love it! Love that cigar box, too!!
Pretty wild right?! Thank you!
Wonderfully informative and helpful. Great examples and demonstration.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you found it helpful!
Another great and informative video. I had no idea there was quartz in dust. I also use the cup method for my cheaper pens like my Kakunos and Preppies. For the pens I keep stored away and don't use much, I have trays with black flocked slots that are used by antique dealers who are selling bracelets or watches. Each slot can hold two pens if you don't mind them touching. These trays have glass covers, so I stack them and drape a cloth over the top one to keep the light out. I have about 6-7 different storage systems going, but I think I like the pen rolls the most.
You are like me--I have several storage solutions because it keeps things interesting! Those jewelry trays sound pretty cool. I keep some of my minerals in watch cases and just throw away the little part that holds the watch and then I have nice compartments for my rocks!
@@InkyRocks Another great option are tea caddy boxes. I just found a nice lidded wooden one for a few dollars in a secondhand shop. I removed the insert with the squares designed to hold tea bags and will be buying pen trays for it. They might work as is for holding rocks or cartridges, nibs, etc. And some seem to have permanent square sections made of wood--the one I found had a plastic insert that was just glued to the bottom and could be ripped out.
@@marilyngardner4269 Oh what a great idea! I also like many of the designs on tea tins and boxes--so it would make for pretty storage!
Great video and thanks for explaining so well regarding how just dust can damage your pens, jewellery and also reading glasses if you don't rinse them off first. Great storage you have.
Thank you! Yes, it is so true about glasses too!
I am just smitten with all of your videos, thank you for showing us your work with ink, pens, and fun views of Japan! Someday I would love to travel there but this year has placed my dream even further out of reach, so I appreciate the window into your world. ❤️
Thank you so much for watching and your feedback. I like putting my pens in "context" so to speak, and I love Japan, so I'm having fun. I'm glad I can share it with you. Hopefully you will make it out here one day!
That Visconti pen storage case is good stuff. I travelled with it thrown in my back pack and it protected my pens very well! The others won't do as good a job.
It really is! For as delicate as it seems (nice soft leather) it can take a beating. One of mine has ink all over it (of course) and kind of got dropped (accidentally). Both case and pens are fine!
Thank you for a few minutes of bliss. You have inspired me to expand my storage from the currently in use, Ferrero Rocher plastic box. 😊
Thank you! But those Ferrero Rocher boxes are such a cool way to store pens!
Having been enabled (I wonder by whom) to treat myself to another beautiful fountain pen you provided me with all I need to store her properly. Alesha, thank you yet again. Your videos are a delight. C xx
Thank you so much! You have been such a lovely supporter and part of the best thing about me starting this channel!
Well, I'm utterly delighted you did. C xx
Great information. I love your Area 51 Notebook/Journal. 📖
Thank you! A friend and I have this running joke about Area 51---we both have this notebook. I just got her a Retro 51 with UFOs on it hahaha!
Great video as always, there is something so soothing about watching ink droplets !
I'm still a novice so I haven"t invested in any very expensive pens or storage yet .
I pick up Cigar Boxes for 99 cents at Total Wine , they discard old ones from their smoke shop and
I lined the bottom of mine with velvet .
That is such a great way to prep your boxes. I also store inks in some of them and knick-knacks. I'm glad you find my videos soothing instead of boring hahaha! Thank you so much!
Hi, i’ve read a few of the comments and realized no one has mentioned what i use: the tray that comes with frozen spring rolls or canelonni (not sure of the spelling here☺️) i wash the plastic tray ,put a thin flocked fabric over it, .it’s sturdy and fits in an empty xmas card box . Some longer pens don’t fit,but most do. Thank you for your videos, they take my mind off of things i can’t change and i learn at the same time!
This is such an awesome idea!! I love the use of everyday objects. Ingenious!
If you don't mind, could you send me a few pictures? Even ones taken with your phone is OK. If you go to the "about" page on my channel and click the button that says "view email address" my email is there. I'd like to start showing some of my viewers' pens, ideas, artwork etc in my videos. I would credit you, use a name you want (real name or RUclips name or whatever) or keep you anonymous--your choice. But if you don't want to, that's OK too. Thank you for sharing your great idea!
This was so much fun!!! My orange Calcite crystal is probably the one crystal I fuss over the most ... always concerned I'll scratch it somehow. 💜 Come to think of it I only have one fountain pen I'm worried about damaging too (my Jim Hinze Custom Blue Storm) but all my pens have a place in a case. I tend to take very good care of them all. I love all the storage options!!! You've got some beautiful ones!!!
Thank you so much Chris! I was just now looking up the guy that made my cigar box pen storage (I'll pin his site in a comment) and I saw you have a video from 2017 about cigar box storage! I'm going to go watch it now!!
Just prior to viewing this, I had ordered a converted cigar box from John M Casteline, on Etsy. There were several different sizes and prices. The items looked very nice in the photos.
Nice!! Thank you for sharing that info!
I picked up a craft box from Walmart that has latches and a handle and is large/deep enough to hold my inks, modding tools, wax seal supplies and thank you cards.
I guess it could hold my two pens as well but...meh.
@JoelTurrell I just went to Etsy and was surprised at how cigar boxes have taken off--there is all kinds of stuff made from them! And you are right, many of them look lovely!
@Detman101 It's amazing how creative one can get with fountain pen and paraphernalia storage!
As always, great job! I love your videos so much! They are the perfect break from my insane school day. Thanks for this, Alesa!
Thanks so much for watching Arlo! Messing with my pens always kind of calm me down, like I've got a handle on things hahaha!
@@InkyRocks haha yeah! Same here!!!
Great video, Alesa! As I noticed your Platinum 3776 Shium in a case, I looked over at mine in it's solitary wooden pen holder. It might be getting dusty, but I love writing with it! I had my rock collection out this week (it's small, but they are beautiful). My granddaughter loves to look at them, hold them. Enjoyed your video so much!
Thank you so much! It is so much more important to use your pens instead of worrying about dust. I try to keep some of my nicer ones protected when they are not inked up. Once they are inked up, it's kind of a free-for-all hahaha! Rocks really do fascinate kids--that's probably why I like them so much!
Very well made video. I didn't know the Vegan alternative from Franklin Christoph. It seems very well made. I definitely agree about the best storage for a pen 😉. Greetings from Italy.
Thank you so much! The FC storage is really well made and rugged. Greetings from Tokyo!
I have pens all over the place. The ones I rarely use are in cigar boxes, loose, or in the single six-pen felt-lined display case. The rest are in ceramic cups (nibs up), horizontal in plastic trays, or just lying on my computer desk or dining room table. I don't "collect" pens; everything I acquire, I use, and I have never considered selling one. I have given pens away to friends, and once or twice to strangers. Some of the best-writing pens I've ever owned are the cheap Pilot Varsity pens, but I don't like throw-away pens (or throw-away anything because of environmental damage). I do not use pen cases or "kimonos" due to the extra time it takes to get the pen deployed; I have a Day-Timer shirt-pocket notebook that I clip a pen to at the current date.
Sounds like you have a great system!
Oh my your pens are lovely too!
Thank you!
Oh my goodness: This video is a treat! Thank you!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
I also agree: the best storage is in your hand: to use them! High-Fives!
Glad I’m not the only one with more than 5 kakunos lol .. great vid as usual!
hahaha! they are awesome pens! Thanks!
Wonderful video!
Thank you!
For someone new to this, I've learnt much. Thank you (♡•♡)
Oh I'm so glad! Trying to be a little entertaining or helpful is my goal! Sometimes I wonder if I am, hahaha! So thanks for your feedback!
Love that shot with a Bokumdondoh 149 in a 100 yen tray 😂 I found some dish drainers at Seria that work well as pen trays. Will bring them next time we sell pens at Wagner!
hahahaa! That would be great! I may have to get some just to store pens in. Seria sells good plastic!
Excellent Video 🌹😎. I had no idea quartz was in the dust! I guess you an teach and old dog new tricks 😉.
I’ve been using thrift store purchased “Tooth Brush Holders”. Much cheaper (I think, ... my wife purchased them years ago) rather then new. Saw a Marble 4 hole(r) solid block on Target online, but $19.99 seemed too steep compared to a couple of bucks I think was paid for the one(s) I have . Of course, leaving them exposed to dust and the like does nothing to protect them, but they are ... kind of on display I suppose, and I can pick whichever one I want for the day quickly and easily 🤗
Thank you! I wouldn't worry about your pen display. Where the problem comes in is if your pens get a thick coating of dust and then you wipe it down--and if this happens often. If you use your pens often enough, they won't accumulate all that dust and your'e good!
would you consider doing a collection video? i always love seeing the pens people have accumulated over time, and their thoughts on them!
Maybe a partial or themed one. Otherwise the video will be too long. But I'm selling a bunch soon, so we will see! You may want to check out the video called Crazy Pants Pens. It has a lot of weird ones in it!
My brother made me a beautiful wood pen block out of mahogany….then I read about the dust issue. Ugh. I use most of my pens, only have just under 20…the storage options are overwhelming, but I’m leaning towards the Rickshaw cases and pen sleeves. They are not made of leather, are made in the USA, come in fun designs, and looks so soft and cozy. if I were a pen, I’d want to live in one
Hahaha! That’s actually a great video topic-where would I want to be stored if I was a pen! Don’t worry too much about the dust issue. It’s more for long durations of time and then wiping down the pen haphazardly (so it scratches). In the end, it’s more important to use your pens than coddle them. Hope you find a good solution!
Great stuff.
Thank you Paul!
Very informative video and so many beautiful pen storage options. I'm surprised anything in my house is still intact, given that there's quartz in dust ;-) I know I should probably take better care of my pens, but none of them are expensive and I keep my inked up pens in a cup on my desk so I won't forget to use them often. Even so, some of them end up clogged from not being used often enough.
Thank you Jackie! My problem is that I leave them wedged into places and forget about them hahaha! The cup way is the best way!
Love your vids and this one is no different. 🙂💜
Thank you so much!💕🌸
Awesome info!
HAhaha...I only have three fountain pens. One sits out on my nightstand, My precious stays with me at all times in my pocket, and the third is still traveling to me from china...
If I'm ever lucky enough to have enough pens to "Store" I'll definitely look into that F-C wood fiber case!
That thing is schweeeet!!
It really is nice! But I think the most important thing is to use your fountain pens, and having one on you at all times helps with that! Best storage of all!
I only have two Kaweco Sport (M & EF nib) which I always carry in my pen pouch. They're not protected, they're stuck in there with my pencils and my other pens but I like to have them readily available just like that. ( ◜‿◝ )♡
Maybe I'll search for storage options when I get a fancy one and then I'll be able to use this video as a reference to know what to look for my needs. Thanks a lot for uploading this! 💖✨
Thank you so much for watching and your feedback. I actually have a pen rolling around in the bottom of my purse hahaha! I try to store my nicer ones, but I think it's most important to use them, and thus, be readily available!
I LOVE the combined fountain pen/ink storage box! Where can I find it?
It's by Toyooka Craft. They have a website www.toyookacraft.com and an IG: Toyooka craft. Once Covid is over and there is another SF Pen Show, I think they may attend--they did last year.
Loving your videos. Would you mind doing one on travelling with ink?
Thank you! That's a great idea! I'll add it to my running list of videos.
I didn't understand the importance of storage away from first. Now I can better protect my nicer pens. 😊
Yes, it's good to protect your nicer pens when you are not using them. But it's more important to use and enjoy them!
Love the science 💜🖋💜
hahaha! Rock Science FTW!
Where did you get these? please
What particular item were you talking about?
Keeping soft cases in specifically "desk" drawers may not be the best idea, I've learned the hard way that they all just fall out at some point, its only desks that have this problem, they sell you on desk, I guess so they don't seem to care about making the drawer bearings small, despite making them constantly load bearing
For some reason, some of the pens in my pen sleeves fell out in my carry on! But they were fine.
Rickshaw Bagworks pen rolls are the best
They really are. Their recent fabrics are really cool!
Mildy curious... Do you have an ink journal? I'd love inspiration from someone like you!
It's not really an ink journal, but I have a journal where I write what ink is in what pen (otherwise with all these reviews, I would be so lost). I don't evaluate them in any way--just keep track. Then I have a journal where I splash inks into it and label it--I fill that out when I remember hahaha!
I don't want something too official but I'd love a notebook besides my everyday journal to play with inks in. The paper would have to be Tomoe River for me though!
I have SO many inks! Why not play with them and experiment with techniques? Btw, I know I've said this before, but I L O V E your voice! Omg
@@belle_bookworm2533 Thank you! I do play around but I haven't been organized enough to make a video about it yet!
I'd love to see more on how ebonite pens can be altered by light...
I don't think I can do a whole video, but I may try to weave it into another one as part of a larger subject. Thanks for the idea--I do have an ebonite pen destroyed by light and have talked a little to the owner of Eboya on how he takes care of his pens.
@@InkyRocks Or maybe instead show the damage on a few photos on Instagram... ?
@@docfrayon I don't have any damaged one. I had one once and then it got urushied!
@@InkyRocks I would love a tour of Eboya. Your Tokyo adventures are some of my favorite videos.
@@berryrohseberryrohse8392 I'll definitely ask them about it. I have a couple of places I need to visit for "research" hahaha! Thanks!
My answer to that is: Well. Yeah .. 😂😂
Is it your natural voice?
Yes. I’m an old lady.
You know....the mirror on the Palomar Telescope was sanded during the last stages of calibration by people rubbing the glass with wet hands.
seriously? That is so cool! There must have been a pattern or something to keep it even!
Inky.Rocks there’s a documentary about it. The mirror was off by one thousandth of an inch or something so they couldn’t use a sander or any other material and after testing hundreds they decided that fingers can rub off the thin layer of glass needed to make the mirror work.
@@Darkslide99 haha! that is so wild!
