Thank you so much for the feedback! I have actually made a new channel for any metalworking related projects, hoping to get into more stuff ruclips.net/channel/UCwNVjPEk-yzQxZuL30w3_JAfeatured
I just bought an ih cub cadet 1250 , the deck is in need of serious repair, I watched several videos using, jb weld , bondo, etc; this is by far the best video I’ve seen , you’ve shown me how to properly repair my deck , Thankyou & May God Bless
Hey man, nicely done! I'm 16 years old and I was just given a big ol' rusty truck and it has massive rust holes in the bed. I've never welded rust before, and it's in a tricky place, but your video showed me the basics of how to do it. Thanks!
You did this great work on a mowing deck........I truly wonder what it would look like,if you actually worked on a valuable veteran vehicle....? This truly is an outstanding piece of workmanship - I love, when people still can fix something instead of throughing it away.... Thanks for posting.
+2233golf2 Thank you so much for the compliment and support! I would love to get my hands on a classic car but unfortunately don't have the facilities to work on it. I am however working on my daily drivers, bring life back into them.
Now that is restoration. Thanks for uploading. Everything I own is old. I am old school and if you can save it,,,,it will most likely save big money more times than not. Plus, the newer gear these days is way overpriced and not made nearly as well. Much appreciated.
Glad you enjoyed it. Yep, definitely can't beat the old stuff, I prefer it over anything new. But finding parts can be tough, I have an old Briggs and Stratton engine that needs a tank. I patched it for now so I can use it (it's on a compactor), but I'm debating on finding another tank or making an aluminum tank once I get a new welder.
After thought.. Who are these miserable people that go around clicking thumbs down on excellent videos, such as this one, all over You Tube?? A bunch of douche bags if you ask me..
I love doing repairs like this around the house. I'm not sure what I'd be doing with my powerimig around. Everyone should learn how to weld in high school.
I used a flexible tape measure to measure around the curve, then added another 1-2 inches roughly just to be safe. Once I had the shape bent, then I placed it on the rusted area, traced it out and cut the remaining rusted area of the deck.
I'm converting a car that was originally transverse front wheel drive to use a north/south engine layout and will be making a custom subframe for the front suspension and engine mounts. I'd like it to look like it's an OEM part so being able to contour thicker gauge steel is a big step in that direction.
I used an angle grinder to cut the sheet metal to size, release cuts, and cut out the rust. To bent it up, just a couple blocks of wood, a couple concrete, and a hammer. Then besides using the mig welder to weld in the patch, that's it.
It looks just like a Sears deck because Roper made some of their tractors. I have one from the '80s and it looks just like it. When I run across some rusty metal (which is a lot) I give it a "Navy" paint job - but with my own twist. Sand or wire-brush the loose rust. Then prime with red oxide primer but before priming it wipe down with lots of mineral spirits and then brush on the primer while it's still wet. The primer flows into all pores and levels out great. The topcoat will look great too.
I did the same kind of a job several times but used to leave the welding beads because they make the mower s look tough and kinda brutal:)) Also I don't have a mig-welder so I had to learn how to do this job with stick one. I have to say it wasn't easy especially when I wasn't able to find any rods thinner then 2.5 mm%))
Great job. You got a lot of good metal to weld to. For me too much pitting and too thin. I cut out side piece and got a thicker patch and the length is 3 inch overlap and I'm just going to pop rivet sides and metal patch, por 15, fiber glass inside. Weld some tabs to make it structurally sound. @nd hand deck, not maintained at all. No metal means pop rivet , weld best u can. Nice to see professional job.
when i first seen that deck i was like WTF! lol.. but the metal work was really good impressed with the fit of the metal and attention to making it look part of the deck , not something slapped on and welded, good job, looks good !
I have built a small welder to weld the tabs on ni-cad. batteries. I want to make welding rods out of my tig wire. Can i coat them with something to act as insulation?
Doorguru How impractical thinking... I mean, sure a "new" deck would be expensive, but in most places in America you could find a used one in the junk, and if not, just throw a fucking mat of fibreglass on it, or even glue a piece of plastic on there with epoxy. At the end of the day, you don't want to baby a massed produced Chinese crapper.
+Jerkwaad I bet you are the type of guy who can fix zipppp...... Economy loves you-buy-buy-buy....... everybody can buy stuff-only some can fix stuff-like our guy here!
Haha, can't beat a good excuse to buy new tools ;) I was going to buy a tig welder for doing custom exhaust instead of paying someone, but the unfortunately part is I don't have a proper place to store it.
Nice job EXCELLENT demo….covered the subject in minimal time. Other RUclipsrs should follow note. I do not need to know their life history making a 2 minute demo stretch to 15-20 minutes !
i HAVE TO DO THE SAME WITH MY Cub Cadet but the bad spots are mainly where the pulleys tie into. I think I'm going to try and make a new deck. I will probably be easier.
Gonna have to check out more of your videos before I tackle my own here. The patch adds character for sure, you recon bondo will help get rid of the seams that can be sorta be seen? Cheers.
In order to smoothen out those welds, ensure they are ground smooth, use an epoxy primer to seal the surface and then add body filler, smoothen out with sanding, after that a high filler primer and then smoothen out again before applying paint.
Very nicely done! A few questions, if you will??? I presume you were using a 110 V DC Mig/Fluxcore welder with fluxcore wire only, there fore a fluxcore process without the Argon? Also what Fluxcore wire alloy did you use and recommend?? Thank you very much as I have a mower deck and a small mig/fluxcore welder that I'm learning with. Also an AC only fluxcore wire welder in reserve.
+kiotipass Thank you. Yes it's a 110v flux-core mig welder so no argon but AC. The flux-core takes place of the argon shielding so it's a different welding wire than compared to what is used in an argon application. I have used argon in the past and my welder can be converted to argon as well. Flux-core wires are only available in different diameters as far as I know and will depend on what size is required for your welder. Smaller diameter wire tends to weld better though.
+4DIYers ... That was fast, thank you for the explanation. Just for clarification ? from what little this SC has been able to determine your flux-core mig welder operates on AC but converts the output to DC either DCEP or DCEN. The reason I ask is that most all welders mig/fluxcore are DC that you can use gas or fluxcore wire alone with no gas. I have a FLUXCORE wire only welder JobSmart that operates only on AC with Fluxcore wire only no conversion possibilities. Just AC with Fluxcore wire only and not as likely to get the results that you've gotten with your excellent work. Thank very much again as that is outstanding work. AC output or DC output!
No problem. I believe the AC output mig welder tend to be directed towards the commercial market and are much more expensive. I had to double check on the model for my welder, here is the user manual www.lincolnelectric.com/assets/servicenavigator-public/lincoln3/imt821.pdf
+4DIYers Apologize for my slow response. Had a few days to meditate on this. Trying to determine the settings that you used? It appears that your lincoln output voltage is DC. I presume you are using the DC output. No problem with that. However, with that said, you are using the fluxcore wire with the DC setup on your Lincoln. This is the question are you using DCEP or DCEN???? polarity for the Fluxcore wire when welding the deck with your Lincoln?? The polarity can be set either way on your Lincoln. Hope that this question is better formulated and will be able to be explained for this senior citizen. Thank you so much for your patience & understanding! KK
+kiotipass I believe mine operates on DCEP judging by the diagram, but I've honestly never looking into that aspect too much. I did use the welder on the high setting. Sorry I can't be much more help than that and glad to help out.
Awesome work. Old school craftsmanship being lost for the buy buy buy mentality. Which might explain the 59 dislikes...LOL Thumbs up. Thanks for sharing. ;-)
for this mower deck he could have, but he used a MIG process. For thin metal, like on cars, you would want to use mig or tig while only doing small welds at a time as to not melt the metal.
Thank you! Awesome to hear, not many people offer such a service where I live. I had a hard time trying to find someone to tig weld my aluminum valve cover.
I watched about 10 videos of doing rust repairs . This is the most professional one.
Great work!
this on the pro level great job.
Can you do me one over @@anthonymarino4260
Yours is one of the most professional jobs I have seen. I'm going to try out my everlast pulse mig on a sheet metal repair. It should be a lot of fun.

your can only learn.
Nice job. I especially like the way you cut the metal patch so it could be bent and formed to follow the curve of the deck. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you, I really appreciate the feedback :)
that was an excellently done repair, very professional. I like how you made relief cuts to help curve the metal! Great great video.

Thank you so much for the kind words!
Bloody good repair Mate, cheers from John, Australia.
Thank you, I really appreciate the feedback!
Thanks for showing how a great welding repair should be done - I learnt a lot. Really nice outcome, almost too good for a mower deck but will last!
True craftsmanship. It's a shame that more and more products are becoming
"throw away". Its awesome when people repair and fix before buying new.
This guys a Genius! Nicely done repair Amigo
High Five!
Nicely done!!! The finished job is reflected in the extra prep-work done to make it fit up well
You should make one for cars and paint/bondo stuff
That curved repair section you made was awesome, I'd be well proud of something that close fitting!
Thank you :)
After thought.. Who are these miserable people that go around clicking thumbs down on excellent videos, such as this one, all over You Tube?? A bunch of douche bags if you ask me..
Doorguru Yes jealous DB's who wish they could do something this good
Well obviously you are not respecting my option either..

Awesome to hear and thank you for the feedback! Feel free to share photos on my Facebook page.
I went about my repair all wrong....welp. time to bring it off and do your method. Outstanding work
Impressive repair job!
Great work matching the contour, gave me some good ideas for my projects.

That is one tidy job, well done, thank you.
Many thanks!

man i got to say hands down to this welder perfect for me i am goona download this video and use this tech real neat and fast repair

Thank you so much for the kind words and feedback! Yeah it’s tough welding to pitted metal, just keeps burning back.
Wow, very nice work. you are an artist.
+lar4305 Thank you!
wow vary nice work i usaly just plate over but i like how you did this.. made the pices first then traced and cut so they were exact ...nice work
woot woot! nice job buddy a lasting repair!
very very nice....Getting ready to do my 36 year old Wheel Horse..
Thank you and awesome to hear! Those Wheel Horses are quite rare around here, can't remember the last time I've seen one.
when i first seen that deck i was like WTF! lol.. but the metal work was really good impressed with the fit of the metal and attention to making it look part of the deck , not something slapped on and welded, good job, looks good !
Perfect repair. Thanks.
Thank you!
I have built a small welder to weld the tabs on ni-cad. batteries. I want to make welding rods out of my tig wire. Can i coat them with something to act as insulation?
Nice work.... a true inspiration!
Somebody must've REALLY liked this mower!
Have you priced a new deck lately? Can be 100's of dollars, even if you could find them for older equipment. This guy saved some dough, big time. :)
Doorguru How impractical thinking... everybody can buy stuff-only some can fix stuff-like our guy here!
Nothing like a repair like this to justify my everlast welder purchase to my wife.
Haha, can't beat a good excuse to buy new tools ;) I was going to buy a tig welder for doing custom exhaust instead of paying someone, but the unfortunately part is I don't have a proper place to store it.
You did a awesome job on that I may have to fix mine now.
Yep, a flux core mig welder (no argon).
practical job with good finish well done.
now thats how ya patch it right
Thank you!

Very nice work.
That’s neat! Good job 👍🏻
Thank you!
Good welding, well done
AWESOME fabrication!! Love it.....
Very very nice job. Almost too nice of work for a mower deck. I fix many decks but not sure I could do it that clean.
good and make me learn a lot!!
Hell Yeah!! Good Job!!
how didi you know how much metal to remove for the curve
@TheMidnightrdr Nope, actually a Roper 48" deck.
Thank you everyone for the comments btw!

Thank you! Some of these old decks are hard to find and I'm a firm believer that things can always be fixed instead of thrown away ;)
Great looking results!
Very neat welding, it was that neat I thought it was oxy-acetylene welded.
Heck yeah, nice work
nice work,as good new. Well done.
+GerbilFrenzy Thank you!
great repair.
Precise instruction and shop class theme music. Too often welding videos have repulsive glitter rock in the background.
Thank you! I really wish I was able to do this in more of a hands on walk-through. Hopefully I'll have the opportunity again.
came for the video, stayed for the tune :-)
@0.44 I also have that blue prier, "Chanel Lock" It lasts a life time.
Yeah they make some awesome pliers. We have quite a few older sets, they've had a rough life and still work excellently.
nice patch work
Awesome job
can any body send the information, how round shaped sheet metal doors are made.
Did you use a mig welder ?
Awesome work
Thank you!
wow nice job there
Nice work
Man you put some work in on this. Do you do auto bodies also?
Thank you! Just for myself, I have some other auto body related videos on my channel. Don't forget to subscribe.
Nice job 👍
Thank you!
Wow man, I never thought on how they did metal patches. This was great. Did you use arc welding on this?
Thank you! Nope, it was a flux core mig welder.

Thanks for the answer.

BonerForestTM THank you, I apreciate your reply. I'm going to buy a cheap small Inverter Stick welder and start from there.
MaghoxFr Flux core.
Nice and profecinal job
Well done!
Good job ! I have a small welding and fab shop, customers bring in abused decks like this. I get at least $200 for welding in patches no paint.
Thank you! Awesome to hear, not many people offer such a service where I live. I had a hard time trying to find someone to tig weld my aluminum valve cover.
Great job!
Thank you!
You do * excellent * work!
Did you tig weld or mig weld the patches?
Thank you! Flux core mig weld. Don't forget to subscribe.
Nice work...
Sears Suburban deck??
Thank you for the tip! :)
NICE WORK
Thank you :) I actually just released another fabrication video this week. This time for a custom light bar mount.
I WILL CHECK IT OUT KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK THERE ARE NOT MANY CRAFTSMEN LIKE US LEFT TODAY MOST PEOPLE ARE HOPELESS AND CLUELESS
can someone tell me what is that.. otherwise... nice job
Nice job,
Thank you :)
well done
Thank you!
Man that is tasty work, I wish You lived beside me,I would challenge You to repair my kubota Deck (its bad REALLY BAD)
Thank you and don't forget to subscribe!
Buy a new shell then transfer all the hardware.
amazing!
Neat work .
Perfect job. I couldn't do it better. ;-)
impresive
