Crucial missing footage is how you remove those 2 plastic bolt covers. That’s because you need to really jam a small pick tool into the tiny gap and pry it off. You’ll probably do some rim damage to the plastic cover but that’s all!

Nice video! Yes common problem with the 2nd gen prius, I been repairing them in a similar way, I find it easy and best just to drill a hole just below the mounting slot where the spring can go into the plastic housing then bend a slight return on the spring! Thanks Nate

Nice! Thought that might have been a former airbag deployment or something. Good to know it's just a spring.

Thanks mate, fixed mine today with a screw, a nut and a washer. The screw and the nut don't stick out too bad so that's a positive and my upper glove box looks stock.

THANK YOU ! I just bought my 2006 and the car is super mint except for this one thing, worked like a charm, note, I pushed down with some pressure and heard a click, the part that was lifted, seemed to go back in place. Awesome video, I used a hex screw with a washer btw to hold the pring.

you are quite handy! I have this problem also! as well as the combo meter issue. if I watch all your vids on 2nd gen Prius im sure all my issues will be resolved!

Thanks, this is great. I stumbled upon it, searching for other videos for my new used Prius. I'd suggest using a screw that you can attach to a little nut on the glovebox side. No chance of hurting a finger in the glovebox not expecting the sharp edge.

omg thank you so much! lifesaver! man since I've had this car I realize it has sooooo many little quirks like this! The instrument cluster capacitor that has to be replaced. the AC controls resistor that has to be added with aftermarket radios. The stupid vanity light thing where the light won't come on. The stupid trunk water leak. the stupid front passenger floor ac water leak. The trunk hatch rippling off in the cold and bursting like glass. The driver's floor mat sticking to the gas peddle. I mean damn I can go on and on. The damn drive train is reliable as hell. but the quality of the materials sucks ass! These are problems people shouldn't have to be dealing with! Oh, yea let me mention the filling the gas tank issue everyone seems to have. filling the gas tank to complete full seems to be impossible on this damn car. meter says it's full but only like 4 to 5 gallons go in and I have to keep going to the gas station multiple times a week. I have a first-gen Prius that accepts 11 gallons. and my gas lasts 3 weeks in it. Oh yea lets not forget the rear HV battery fan that has to always be disassembled and cleaned lol omg... My first-gen Prius never had to clean the HV battery fan and it's vented to the outside of the car. The only prob I've had with my first gen is constant front wheel bearing replacements and the plastic around the ac controls cracked like glass. and the MFD went out. and throttle body cleaning here and there. that's it.

Thanks for all the info man! You described half of my problems at least haha I have 2004 with 175k. Also you might be interested to learn that the 2nd gen prius has a gas bladder inside of the gas tank for the US models only. The gas tank is 11 gallons but the bladder is 6 gallons. Not sure why they did this.. maybe weight reduction? A just in case measure for collisions (due to hybrid nature) We may never know

Simple answer on good said - Bladders help prevent fuel vapor from building up in the tank, thereby reducing hydrocarbon emissions. The Prius' new fuel tank will use an improved vapor-recovery system that will allow the car to retain its low-emission rating in California.Jul 6, 2009

@@ThatCoolKidYouKnow I found I could only get 7 gallons in when there were just a couple of bars left on the gas gauge. A friend looked up the specs and told me the tank was 11 gal (if I remember correctly). But I could never get more than 7 into it. Sometimes Wifey needs gas and it takes 3.5 gallons. Thanks for the answer to the mystery.

For the gas fill problem it could be that you need to recalibrate the gas gauge. If you fill with 5 gal and it says full then you may still have 5 gallons. I had this problem, car only took 6 gallons and crudely recalibrated my gauge (you have to have your car level) and now I fill with 9 gallons. The recalibration is a push this while foot off the brakes then press that while scratching your head and flapping your arms kinda thing. Do a quick web search for it.

Good video. 3M 5200 epoxy or fiberglass, would avoid unsightly screws. Take a heat gun to that dash and weight it down. Avoid getting it too hot.

I've start to think that this humb is a factory mistake, because mine is so tight it cant move at all at press and I've see it on two other cars too :)

My 2005 started doing that in 2007. It was still under warranty so I thought that they would replace it with another one with a stronger clip. I was told it was a cosmetic defect and wasn’t covered by my bumper to bumper extended warranty.
The plastic clip broke off on every gen two I’ve seen. I just clamped mine and Jb welded it in place. 6 months in the sun and the hump had settled back down.
    Just a bad design.

I took off the entire dash to fix the capacitor on the combo meter. No issues with the combo meter anymore, but the top glove compartment that you showed doesn't close properly for me now. I do notice that spring sticking out. Wonder if I could just cut it off with some pliers.

Removing the covers over the screws was not so easy. It took jamming the sharp pointed end of a knife between the cover and the back plate to pry off the covers. Also there is a wiring connector attached to the back of the back plate that requires squeezing the tabs to remove it from the back plate. It's a good video, but it would have been even better if you had shown these steps.

Tiny drill bit (maybe 3/32). Drill and then pull the drill out. Out come the buttons. Instant access.
