- Welcome to my Discovery Retreat Project… a small backyard renovation aimed at converting an unused space into an oasis built for a family. My wonderful clients have graciously agreed to let me document this journey for all of you and I am so excited to start this series! In this first episode, we’re discussing the family’s wishlist, existing site conditions and how we are going to zone this backyard for maximum enjoyment.
Let’s dive in!

"...give you a beautiful first impression of this back garden" - what follows are tall weeds, mud, rocks, perennials in need of attention, fence repairs, and stuff sitting around. This is probably exactly how most of our yards are or how they started, rather embarrassing. But you being the example and sharing nothing but reverence and respect for the massive potential between the family, the space, and the plants - your triangle - is just inspiring and makes me want to fan girl all over you. I'm very excited to watch this space transform. Thank you for investing in your subscribers and teaching us priceless garden and life concepts.
So interesting hearing the client's ideas for this area and how you imagine and create it into reality. I can't wait to see this terrific makeover!!
This is the start of a very exciting project. I really enjoy how you outlined the decision making process from the start. I’m very much looking forward to following the progress of this project. Huge thank you to the homeowners for sharing their journey with us!
So many learnings and lessons ! 🥰🏡⛲️🇨🇦
I was so excited they agreed for me to document the process! It’s such a treat to share it with you all. My deepest hope is that it empowers you all to think how you can become more connected to the space you call home! 💕
Being able to see this yard go from its current state to a beautiful and functional space is goiing to be so motivating and informative. I am reallly loking forward to it. Having these episodes on RUclips is so great as it allows me to go back and rewatch them over time. Thank you.
How fun Kate! Thanks for the design tips and tricks! Can’t wait to watch the progress!
So happy that Janey introduced me to your channel😊. I’m a Master Gardener, but I always learn something new from every one of your videos.
Hi Kate! I can hardly wait 😊 You are sooo AWESOME! Love how you talk out every thought process and details! Thank you 🙏
Thanks for sharing. So excited to see all the upcoming changes
This will be so interesting to watch as it evolves. Just moving the staircase opens up possibilities--brilliant.
It was literally the first thing we decided upon. This is what happens when builders don’t consider how a home relates to the land it’s built on… the garden becomes an afterthought. But what a crazy privilege to live right next to a greenbelt! I’m so excited to marry the two spaces. 😍
Well I have nothing to add, all the other comments cover my thoughts. Looking forward to the make over. Thanks Kate
How exciting! Thank you for taking us on this journey. Looking forward to see the steps ahead. ❤
Yay!!! I’m so happy to have you along for the ride. ☺️
can't wait to see it. i know it's going to be beautiful. thanks for sharing. hope you have a great day!!!
It will be interesting to watch the progress of this project 🌺🌺
💗💗💗💗Super, good job
Awwww… thank you friend! I’m so excited to share it with you all!
Excited to see the progression of this project. Since the shady and wet area of this yard is planned to be an area for the boys to be active, instead of turf that will be a constant upkeep headache, perhaps consider something like the artificial turf that is now being used in the outdoor meeting area in the middle of the University Village not far from the Ravenna Gardens store. For all the use this outside meeting area has gotten over the years, the artificial turf still looks good. All the lush natural plantings around the artificial turf really enhance an area that might otherwise be unappealing because of the artificial turf.
Right?!? That UVillage area is such a highly used area and it was an amazing decision for them to incorporate play space. Usually the south end of this garden becomes a mud pit… which means muddy paws and feet inside the house and no grass ever grows. Instead of fighting it, we are leaning in!
Up for the challenge and their garden looking just like mine 😂❤
Right?!? I love to show real spaces and real families. With the tiny deck and awkward access, the yard just became an inviting space when at its core, it’s truly magical. ✨
Hmmm, what plants will withstand hits from soccer balls?! This will be an interesting project. The side stairs is a great start.
Can't wait to see this project take place. It's so exciting.
Thank you! Can’t wait to follow this project. Please give tips on how to find a true landscape professional.
I’m thinking that perhaps you might make sure that all wetness drains away from the house even if it takes French drains 😉. I say this as a former homeowner of a house where the basement flooded every time it rained.
Okay damn this potential seriesme subscribed.
I've been LOOKING for something like this.
This is going to be great!!! Looking forward to following this project!
It’s going to be an epic before and after!

Me too! ☺️

Yay! So happy to have you here! 🌸
Daughter just moved into a 1963 mid mod home CA 10A. It’s a jungle! I’m hoping to help clear it out a la Jess @youcandoitgardening with design inspiration from Erin, Janey, Robbie, Laura and the rest of the tribe. This series will help so much. I’ve already watched the front yard dining room videos multiple times. Love your style!
Oh I’m so excited for you!!! And thank you. ☺️ What a compliment to be considered among so many amazing people. 💕
Looks like a neat project. I hope you will update us. ❤
I am totally excited about this project!
Me toooooo!
Good morning Kate, Looking forward to see you transform this project. I have pavers and I do see the color palette change with wet weather. I also am seeing different color of the sand used to make the pavers stand out more too.
My Garden says “Hello” to you 😊🪴👒🪴
Exciting!!!!❤️

I am so thrilled they opened their home to our channel. 💕
Can't wait to see the transformation! I have plenty of yard space and patio areas that I dream of doing some things with. This will be a great new series of projects!
Consider sinking the hot tub, allowing the view from the media room, and keeping the “patio” to feel as big as it may.
Such a good thought! For logistical/mechanical reasons (proximity to the foundation, sub-grade electrical, drainage requirements, etc) we aren’t pursuing that option, but I LOVE it when a hot tub is at a deck height. Great thought!
Thank you Kate. 💐💚🙃
