    Refreshing to have these lesser known works exposed. It shows what we have been missing all these years. Thanks Paul.

    has to now be my favorite classical tune. i never knew sibelius to be this amazing..as in the intro. as i am so used to listening to the peer gynt calmness of the composer. as a kid , that's all i heard. but caprice 00 .. 1.57.....wow!

    Une version à couper le souffle, à la fois virtuose, mais surtout musicale en tout moment, avec un excellent interprète doté d’un instrument avec une si belle sonorité, je suis pantois...

    I can't claim to be the biggest fan of Sibelius's music but this is really, really good. It's a great mix of technical ability and feeling. Well played, too.

      How can you not be a fan? I can understand if you dont like his piano work but the violin pieces, the violin concerto and his symphonies are objectivly magnificent. Piano work is subjective because he was not a pianist

    This is played with a flashy technique, at times almost a bit slurred. There are some strange accelerandi (0:27 and similarly 2:33) and rallentandi (2:09 to 2:28)), too, not marked by Sibelius. The main melody at 0:42 is usually carried by the pedal, but not here, so it gets broken and "pointy" in my opinion, and sounds a bit strange. A bit better at 2:06. The ultimate ending isn't quite as dramatic as Sibelius intended, either, but nevertheless quite a fun interpretation, like the energy is running out in the end.

      Martin, you are a very discerning listener, and obviously know Sibelius' music well as seen from your widespread comments on RUclips.
      In your opinion, who are the best interpreters of Sibelius' piano music?

    • @martinwest2538
      @martinwest2538 2 года назад

      @@brendanoflaherty1424 Firstly I'm very happy there are such a lot of musicians actively playing - and in that way keeping alive - our musical heritage, and not only the "cream of the crop" but lifting forth all the lesser known hidden jewels as well. Being a Finn and having grown up with the fabulous music of Jean Sibelius - the piano music as well as his symphonic and other "greater" works - it has a special place in my heart. But I am not capable of nominating any particular pianist being "the best", while there is so much good even in the most unassuming but sincere performance of a random RUclipsr - not to mention all the fantastic professional level performers and performances.
      It boils down in the end to the aspect of presenting the most authentic version of the intentions of the composer (e.g. all information the music sheet provides) versus the "artistic liberties and pretensions" of the performer. In my personal view the first and foremost role of an artist is to present the former, with all personal liberties and interpretations being not forbidden in any way, but always ought to be very well motivated.
      That's why one has to consider the quality and "betterness" of every musical piece one at a time. I might be very pleased with the way a pianist plays a certain piece, but at the same time liking an other piece by some other pianist even more. It's perhaps not at all about "betterness" in the end in my opinion, it's perhaps more about who tells a story in a more interesting, fascinating - or perhaps authentic - way? And as the original story was presented by the composer one has to ask "did he/she tell the story in the ultimate way, or do I as a performer (storyteller) have to improve on the expression in any way? Is there something I can add to make the story even more fascinating, experiential and likable?"
      I do hope my sometimes very meticulous and finical comments are not to be taken too personally, but more as a try to bring forth "the voice of the composer", of course in the personal way I myself interpret the information on the music sheet, combined with other musical and even non-musical (such as cultural and historical) aspects. I reserve the right to be wrong in any aspect, but hope my thoughts would even if not try to dictate the way music should be interpreted, give some further thought about the intentions of the composer, the ultimate storyteller.
