Having worked in a hospital, Scrubs really captured the emotional swings that that environment entails. Boredom into sudden crisis. Laughing and joking with coworkers, and then rushing family members to see a terminal patient in the span of 90 seconds.
Helping a nurse dress out for a possible Ebola case because you used to work in the nuclear industry, and the procedures are mostly the same. Being able to calm them and focus them, saying, "I've been there, done that, got the t-shirt."

I think Scrubs "Season 9" is one of the rare cases where people universally agree a season of TV doesn't count. Because it doesn't. Season 8 was the true finale season. I don't even like calling it "Season 9" cause it really was a spin-off disguised as a final season.

Doing med school was also really a dumb decision. Original scrubs had the cast just after med school for a reason, that what they learned in the classrooms wasn't enough. The real education came from real life experience and now being a doctor and not just a student. That's what many of the Scrubs episodes conveyed how classroom knowledge wasn't sufficient.

When it comes to sitcoms of the 2000's, Scrubs was my one and only from the era. I did watch those more popular shows from time to time, in fleeting fashion. But Scrubs was the only one that kept me coming back for the characters, and I think it is due to the show's embracement of life's darker moments. I gained more respect for hospital staff and learned more about the fragility of life when coming into my teen years. It had so much more to offer beyond jokes and relationships. Yet, it also accomplished those aspects in a continually satisfying matter. I love Scrubs!

  • @supermonkey321
    @supermonkey321 3 года назад +44

"My Finale" is one of the greatest series finales of all time. As mentioned in the video, it's incredibly hard to stick the landing. So many great shows trip on the last hurdle. Scrubs didn't... except then they took that away by making it NOT the series finale. To me, THAT is the biggest mistake and most frustrating thing about the 9th season. It forever made "My Finale" not officially the finale of the show, so Scrubs is left out of the conversation about shows that had the greatest or most satisfying series finales ever.

If you officially called it a spin-off, then you can't sell it as a part of Scrubs package of episodes for broadcast syndication. That's likely the entire reason the studio wanted a 9th season is for more syndication money. If Med School was officially its own thing, then you have to stick with it for 5+ years before you can sell it into syndication.
Saved by the Bell basically did the reverse. It had a failed series Good Morning Miss Bliss which focused equally on the teachers and students. Then they did a spin-off / soft reboot starring the students called Saved By the Bell, and then retroactively rebranded the failed series also as a part Saved By the Bell when the series became a hit.

I always felt the biggest missed opportunity with the “final season” was they didn’t continue to focus on the interns that were heavily featured in Season 8 - the two main interns Sonia & Denise did actually have a good dynamic on screen and to not continue exploring their friendship along with the other interns that were introduced caused me the most frustration as a fan cause I felt it was a good foundation to continue on but alas that didn’t happen.

True! It felt like they bad been building up to a new generation of Scrubs. In the 8th season, the balance between the original cast and the new interns was perfect. So much that I actually did care for them and would have loved to see them continue the legacy of Scrubs. It would have been so fitting with JD leaving the hospital for someone else, someone younger to take over his place. Scrubs is the absolute favorite show among those in the medical profession, and it’s not even close. Young premeds watch it to dream about their future, medical students watch it to affirm their choice, residents watch it because it takes on a new meaning for them, and attendings watch it to reminisce. Sometimes it can be hard for younger doctors-in-training to connect with older physicians, but Scrubs is the most high-yield pop-culture knowledge you can spend your time learning. References from that show will always be understood, because most doctors in America have seen this show and love it for its realistic depiction of our calling

I was shocked when I learned how underrated Scrubs is in the US. I live in Italy, and here it's a real cult classic for so many people, literally everyone between 35 and 20 have at least watched an episode, and most of them absolutely love it and quote it in everyday situations.
I think it's also because of the local dubbing, I've watched the show both in Italian and the original English and I have to say, sometimes I found it to be even funnier with the dubbing.
Either way, it's a great show and it's sad it wasn't as appreciated in its origin country as it was here in Italy.

Respect to Bill Lawrence for all the shows he has created, including Scrubs. He’s a smart show runner and admits a lot (listen to Fake Doctors Real Friends podcast) that Scrubs got routine and he started to change its tone to keep it fresh. Season 9 was nothing more than them taking a chance at extending the show and it didn’t work. No big deal. Considering how much they fought NBC and then got switched to ABC, 9 seasons is an awesome feat for a show with a niche, cult following. Nothing but love for Scrubs.

I just finished re-watching Scrubs this past week. It's funny how much I really enjoyed the show, and I completely agree with you! The last few seasons really had a hard time sticking the landing, but they kept delivering great moments. When JD and Turk sat down with the older gent who was dying, and talked about how it's going to go for him, it was just a wonderfully beautiful episode! I even started the first episode of the last season, but couldn't be bothered, and for exactly the reasons you mentioned. I love Scrubs, though. It was just a great show!

One issue with the show I realize now years later, outside of some dated humor and jokes that don't land over a decade later, is the writers seemed to constantly reset JD each season. He always seems to have some major regression as a character because they ran out of places to go each season - so he'd be a complete jerk about something in order for him to learn the same or similar lessons. I barely remember season 9 to be honest. It's not by any means awful at that point, but forgettable.

I would say the show semi-jumped the shark at the end of season 5, after the excellent "My Lunch" arc they introduced Kim in a super lame way (really, JD can't see women who wear wedding rings?) and then the next two seasons were pretty bad. But season 8 did repair some of the damage.

Season 5 was the last great season of Scrubs. Seasons 6 and 7 were pretty mediocre and season 8 was very uneven, but because they stuck the landing with the finale it's a lot easier to accept them as what they are. Season 9 was not a season at all, it was a spinoff that was labeled a season for marketing reasons. It would be like if Joey was marketed as Friends season 11. I think we can all agree to ignore it.
I will say, though, "Scrubs Med School" never should have happened, but if you're going to write the Janitor off the show they found the perfect way to do it.
