Kona without a doubt, and I've driven both. People, before you decide I highly recommend going for a test drive. After watching this video I felt the interior of the eNiro looked so much better that I thought it would be the car for me. But driving it was terrible. Acceleration was ok, but everything else was unresponsive. Both the Kona and eNiro have heavy steering, but the eNiro was the heaviest. I had to turn the wheel 280 degrees in sharp turns, and when parking I turned it round and round like a truck driver. The Kona drove more like a sedan (similar to the Ioniq, except with heavier steering). By the way, the parking cam was low res and low contrast on the eNiro, so it was hard to see as clearly as with the Kona. Somehow I even liked the interior of the Kona better once I sat in it. Even that weird two-storey console seemed more practical all of a sudden. I don't know why, things just look different from the driver's seat. The version in this video has a lighter colour dashboard which makes it look even cheaper. Mine was black, and looked fine. The Premium Leather version even had some soft plastics, although the only way you could tell was by touching. The Premium would be good enough for me, no need for the leather. The buttons of the Kona were more intuitive than the eNiro, although I've driven the Ioniq before so maybe it's just that I'm used to it. The steering wheel of the Kona felt a bit hard and cheap though. The eNiro wasn't that noisy on an even road, but for some reason whenever I hit a manhole or a speed bump it made a huge thump that resonated in the hull of the car (no, my undercarriage was not touching the tarmac). I felt like I was sitting inside a drum that someone was beating. The eNiro felt way too big, but then again I like compact cars. The exterior of the Kona also looks much better, especially with the Phanom Black paint in my opinion. The navigation Hyundai uses is horrible, so there the eNiro wins. New Kona has 484km range though, so you get more range for the price. In my opinion, the only real competitor of the Kona at the moment is the Model 3, which of course is a better car but more expensive. Lexus' new EV will be in the same price range, but with only 300km range. TL;DR Kona with dark interior looks better. It has better configuration, parking cam, steering, driving feel, range, and sound proofing. Eniro is bigger, has more soft plastics and better navi. Go for the Kona. Or a Model 3, if you can afford it.
A great comparison, I'm getting the Kona 64kwh delivered in November, can't waot, my first electric car. Love your reviews, very informative and interesting.
I agree. Seems like the main difference is that the Niro has slightly more room inside. If you have kids, the Kona is too small. But if you don't have a family, maybe the Kona would be better. If you wan't to sleep in the back of the car, the Kona is too small.
Well thanks to you Bjorn I am going to get rid of my ICE truck and get the Kia Niro EV. I'm 6'6" (in the hopeless system) and 197 cm (in the logical system). I was considering the Kona until you made the video where you lay in the back of these two cars. You showing that I would not be comfortable in the back seat of the Kona really helped me out in my decision. Thanks!
My heart says Kona but my head says Niro. Will have to wait to see prices here in Ireland. I got a mail from Hyundai saying Kona Electric will be available here in Jan 2019. Great video as always Bjorn and one thing’s for sure; I won’t buy any ev without seeing the Bjorn review first. You’re the master!
What a great review, but also what a great feat of athleticism! I can't believe how you move through this so fast and so nonstop! It's both very informative and very fun too watch. Well done!
Hi Bjorn, Thank you very much for the extensive in depth video. I def learned alot from all the tips and stuff about the Kona. I think I mentioned in another of your videos that I put my deposit on the Kona last week. The projected delivery date is May 2020. It COULD arrive earlier but makes no diff to me since it will give me more time to put away more money as a down payment when I take delivery. My father is helping me buy it. I couldn't have done this without him. He knows how much and how long I've wanted to own an electric car, and now, thanks to him my dream has come true. I drive for Uber so it just makes good sense to go electric. Electricity is just so much cheaper than gas and they're just cheaper to maintain as far as servicing goes. Anyway, once again thanks for your efforts in putting this video together my friend :D
The packaging of both cars is surprisingly good, no real compromises made vs their ICE brethren. Hyundai/Kia knows how to do proper EVs, even if they are not built on a dedicated platform. Unlike the other german manufacturer who recently presented its SUV :-)
Good luck on the Tesla. It will break on you. You'll have misaligned body panels, doors, and roof glass. You'll also have a leaky hatch and get water condensation inside your taillights. Also, your "engine" (drivetrain) will get replaced within a few years. And, your Tesla will get towed on a flat bed truck for numerous service reasons. Imagine if a car from any other carmaker had those kind of problems? Somehow, Tesla gets a pass. Go figure.
Was drooling after the Huyndai Kona until you reviewed the Kia Niro. I always looked down on Kia after their Kia Soul but now I really want a Kia Niro.. haha... strange that they are so alike but Kia really managed to one up almost eveyrthing in my opinion. I love my Leaf 2.0 but man I wish I knew about the Kia Niro before i preordered the Leaf 2.0.. Thank you for all your great reviews Bjørn!
Kia Niro full EV is just new.. this full electric SUV vehicle was officially launched 1-2 month ago in Korea from this very year 2018 and until this year was available in Europe only in ice or hybrid form not full EV, but from the end of this year Niro EV will be available on all Kia show-rooms world-wide..
I should say that I actually liked the Kona's interior space better. It looks more premium to me because of the more mate materials (hard plastic parts) than the shiny ones in Niro. However, I can't deny the comfortable large leg space for the back seats in Niro. Kona somehow looks more sporty. I feel lack of seat memory and a bit squizzed leg space for back seats are the most concerning. Yet, I don't know why I like Kona more.
Thanks Bjørn, for the detailed comparison video review of Kona and Niro. You were so good and fast covering almost everything in interior/exterior of the Kona and Niro - I doubt any of us will be able to check all these in 30 min - if we had both cars. Hats off to you !!! As for preference, with 2 kids I have to pick Niro for more space.
Hello Bjørn, thank you very much for this comparison video between the Kia Niro and the Hyundai Kona. Very useful for those of us who are deciding between these two models, as is my case. The video is perfect because it makes an on-site comparison of both models, and this is very useful because you don't have to watch the videos separately. Video made with great effort and explaining everything very clearly. Congratulations ! 👍
Wonderful video Bjorn, great job! I work as a shuttle driver for a large car rental company (US), it's going to be quite interesting on how the transition will transpire.
Thanks for such a comprehensive showing of the Niro & Kona. They are probably made on the same platform with an extension to the rear of the Niro. Hence it being slightly less in range. Due to the weight. Thanks to the two car owners. It was very nice of them to allow you to compare. It’s is pity they are still out of range for the average person. But, given time they will come down in price just like the flat screen TVs.
Thanks Bjørn, an awesome and very helpful comparison! Kona headlights look far more aggressive. Niro headlights look more conventional. Taillights the same. The Niro gear select looks bulky. Seems like they searched for some fancy design element but overdid it. I don't like the Kona middle console. Bjørn explained very well why. The Niro finish is definityl a level above the Kona. I do not understand why they went for the regular lights in certain places. Looks unnecessarily cheap. I actually like the raised infotainment system in the Kona. The Niro design looks better but I think the Kona setup is more practical. This will be a welcome change when switching from the IONIQ. The glossy finish in the Niro looks really nice. But it's a pain in the rear to keep clean. The Niro looks very much like the sister of the IONIQ while the Kona rather looks like the cousin. The Niro Schuko in the back is a killer feature. I actually envy the future Niro users. I will miss that in the Kona. Not sure why Bjørn is so obsessed with the rather useless storage space unter the trunk. :P
TIP: playback speed 1.5 I found the video very helpful. Thank you for making it. Though I wish I could've seen the comparison on how the back seats fold down. But overall, I really enjoyed watching it!
Bjorn, thank you so much for all your efforts! I got a Kona and am very happy with it, the Niro also looks like a great car. Anyone buying eitjer of these will definitely have a nice ride :) Keep up the EV news! 😎
Thanks for the EXCELLENT side by side comparison. I’m planning on purchasing a Niro as I need the size for my family of five. But I was surprised at the Kona’s cargo space! Love the drop down part! The overall cargo space is larger in the Niro when the seats are down. But when up (as mine will be most of the time given car seats), they are almost identical. I think both are winners!
Between i am owner of a Kona electric. What i mostly like is the HUD. Therefore (as i need not so much space as in eNiro) i prefer the Kona. If you need more space, 2 + 2 kids e.g. then eNiro is the better choice. And in the eNiro you sit better in the back seats as in Tesla Model 3. The Kona is ok, if the front ppl are are not > 1.80 cm. Then you have in the back seats also good place. And also better sitting in back as in M3.
craigix To be accurate, the Imperial measures probably stem from Roman roots. They are convenient: an Inch is a 'thumb' length. A 'foot' gives an easy 'rough' measure (most of us have 2, and who has not at some time used 'pigeon-steps' to compare the length of something?). A Yard is the length of an arm, a Cubit the length of a forearm, and a Fathom the span from fingertip to fingertip. A Foot can be divided EXACTLY by 2, 3, 4, and 6. If you have to divide a "Hopeless" Meter by 3, then you are already 'Hopelessly lost' in MILLImeters! I grew up using BOTH. Now I use which ever is most convenient for the job at hand. But I THINK in Imperial, as it is more useful. (I have thumbs, feet, and arms!). Perhaps metric was designed by Napoleon for those who could not count past their fingers and toes? Base 10 is great until you divide by 3. Humans are badly designed: we should have 6 fingers an toes, then life would be so much easier LOL.
Niro is more European than the Kona. The Niro is overall a little nicer in its interior in my opinion and feels less cramped. If I spend around 45K euro on a car I want a little more space than that of the Kona. But if you live in the city where every centimeter counts in parking your car the Kona probably wins and perhaps some people like the smaller interior as being more cosy.
The best video I've seen of Kona vs. Niro. Thank you, you did a great job. I hope to buy a Niro in August, after WA state tax break goes into effect. There are some cool things with the Kona and extra range would be helpful, but I like the styling of Niro better.
I Have found one BIG advantage of Kona - The second display that pops up from the dashboard!!! Thank for Congrats me 😋.(watch it 2 times, no problem :) ) I'm feeling little bit confused, because I'm Hyundai fan, but I'm starting to like the Niro more then the Kona. Thank you for your time filming this comparison.
Thank you very much for taking the time to make this video. It was extremely useful to me. Now all I have to do is find a garage in Ireland that can get a Niro. I would like the little screen on the Niro though. Also the last bit about the Niro having 10 cm longer wheelbases is critical for me.
Congrats on a very comprehensive comparison, The only thing you left out is the ground clearance of each car -very important for me as I need to clear a garage ramp daily.
This has been one of the most useful videos I have seen, thank you (and those folks who provided the cars :-), for doing it. I am looking at both cars, even though (to be honest) I do not like the look of the front of either, but they are both too good to dismiss just for that. A thought on the position of the 'infotainment' screens: I like the high position on the Kona as you do not need to look as far down (away from the road where you should be looking), to use it, BUT, as somebody that sometimes carries long panels (think flat-pack furniture), that will only fit by resting on the dash board, the screen would likely get damaged if you put something on top of it. In the Nero it is protected. That is the game-changer that makes the Niro more versatile for me.
Loved your comparison video. I think it would help to have screen text identifying the cars while your talking. I also noticed the preponderance of charging stations in the garage you were in. In Minnesota where I live we are lucky to find charging stations anywhere. I hope that changes soon. Well done.
I love the way the Kona electric looks but the Niro EV is growing on me too. Other than exterior looks, the Niro seems to be a better choice for me hands down. More room and more features that matter for me.
Dang, that was a great review showing everything side by side. Much better than in real because you never get the side by side chance. In the end, it seems 6 of one, half dozen of another and comes to personal preference.
The Kona screen you compared to is the 7" (which is 8" on the higher spec version Kona.) That kona had really thick aftermarket mats in the back so your feet will be a bit crushed up against the bottom on the seat in front. HUD is brilliant.
Was looking to get the Kona but Niro does it for me after seeing this, the interior looks more premium more leg room, better interior design. I think it has better placement of the screen, these high up ones are too high and everyone can see you use them as well as light hits them easier making it hard to see. Not having vents in the back makes the Kona look so cheap. One comparison you didn't do was back up cameras, that would have been nice, overall good job and get a new camera, place it on your head or something.
Great review! I want the Kona exterior and the Niro interior, haha. I was all about the Kona before watching this, but now it seems the Niro has some advantages. Ultimately it'll come down to which will become available in my area, especially since Kona will be in limited supply.
Thanks Bjørn, I like the Niro over the Kona as the Niro is better for transporting kids in due to the space, electricity for gadgets and heated seats. Don't know what the price difference is though in The Netherlands. The Niro can only be pre-ordered which I did.
Good comparison. The Kona might be more cramped inside, but that also makes it feel more cozy, combined with the warmer light temperature. Also the Kona has better position of the infotainment system, and also has head up display.
The Kona has the same headlight layout as my 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. I quite like it because it’s different. When it finally turns up in Australia I’ll probably get the Niro.
What about the FRUNK? Do either have one? They are both wonderful, but if ya got kids & want more space, then Niro wins. Great video as always Bjorn, thank you sir!
Niro looks batter, and interior is also batter in niro compare to kona, you are doing great videos bjorn so there is no reason to not watch full video. Good job..
Thanks for this. Very helpful. Ice driven the Niro but I prefer the look of Kona, particularly the new model. So I was wondering if the smaller space was worth it without sacrificing features.
i own a Hev Niro, and a colleague of mine a Kona, we just confronted them and Niro is a bit longer, but it offers more legroom for the backseat passengers.
Sorry to thumb you down Bjorn, but the bouncing to and fro and the structure-less review was hard to take it without becoming a bit tv-sick, almost nauseous... otherwise, I think your courage and candour in these EV tests and reviews are refreshingly new! :D
If only someone could make a car with the pros of both these cars and remove their cons and we have the perfect car imo! Both of them have something I don't like and prefer in the other, ugh how can one decide between such similar cars! I discovered the Kona first and lean to it still, but I like some of the features of the nero in terms of space, input plugs and the middle storage layout. The Kona has the pros with the placement and layout of the infotainment system as well as heads up display. So it's really about the Nero's space vs. the Kona's ... driving experience? Idk what to call it, but you get the point. I want both!
Very good comparison. Really enjoyed it and learned a lot. You might get someone to do the camera and free your hands up. You put a lot of effort in showing us the differences. Thanks
Something important that no one really notes in these videos: it looks like the trunk space is almost the same, with the Niro just mm longer, but no one talks about the space - especially the length - when seats are folded down that can make a difference in overall cargo volume (the extra legroom in the Niro), and be good info for putting in long items, or sleeping in each vehicle. The heads up display could be possibly purchased after market, if desired, but I like the idea of one that can come up or down.
Very odd. The other week when the Kona was being tested in a long drive, alongside the Tesla Model X, I did like it, but I thought it looked ugly [I don't tend to like the look of SUVs, although Model X is an exception]. Yet, just in the last few days I have liked the look of the Niro straight away. But now I realise that the Kona doesn't look too bad at all, side by side. Actually, they are both quite compact and nice. Ok, neither are going to win any auto beauty contests but I realise now that if you remove the sleekness of a Model X from view, these little SUVs look quite cute. And we all know that they are good, well designed cars now, with plenty of range and efficiency. Maybe I'm just getting used to the styling at last. Both are an excellent introduction to EVs. I think I still like the Niro just a little bit better, but it's close. BTW, great video with near nerdy amounts of detail. 😁
Personally I prefer the exterior design and general shape of the Niro, it is more spacious inside especially for the rear seats and a little bit more luxurious and "comfy". So, Niro seem better for people travelling more and families, whereas Kona seem better for singles or couples without children who have less needs at the rear. I do prefer the interior (from the driver's perspective) of the Kona. I do like the HUD of the Kona and I would love to have that. What's the price difference ?
Thanks for the comparison. I am thinking about buying either Kona or Niro depend on the price of cause. So far I think I prefer the look of Kona but but will probably buy Niro due to practicality. I am in Australia and I am sure Hyundai has committed to offer Kona Electric in early 2019 but there is no commitment from Kia in term of offering Niro EV in the near future. I saw somewhere mentioned Kia is offering lifetime warranty on their Niro EV battery which is a big plus!
I think they both have some positive features. The Kona looks more high end on the exterior while the Niro seems to have a slightly better interior, especially with the backseat outlet. I have the Fiat 500e and Audi Etron and I think we will end up with one or both of these when the leases are up.
Kona without a doubt, and I've driven both. People, before you decide I highly recommend going for a test drive. A great comparison, I'm getting the Kona 64kwh delivered in November, can't waot, my first electric car. Love your reviews, very informative and interesting.
Tough choice. I like exterior of Kona more, but like the interior of the Niro more.

Yea, Telsa just seems better.

Lol it will break on you in a year, max
Did it break ? 😂
Please keep doing these! This is the most useful EV car video I've seen so far. Didn't mind the length (watched at 1.5x speed). Great job.

Imperial system, the hopeless system. That made my day xD 20:08
Look we invented it and we're sticking to it, us, the USA, Burma and Liberia.
craigix 😂
not sticking to it in science though ;) lol
Irony of using ancient imperial measurements with latest tech EV.

Thank you for the comparison and for trying to show us as much as possible during your trip.
Bjorn you are a professor. Great video.
Very good comparison review Bjørn! Gratulerer!
TheMagdiragdag don’t got kids so Kona is perfect for me
I went for Kona because I felt that it drove better than the Niro.
Watched it twice! Loved the comparison! Great video!
That was intense. Great comparison!
excellent just excellent thankyou for all the half hour. They were all the real questions I had.
Thank you for comparing them, you were very detailed in the comparison. Great comparison.
Thanks Bjørn, perfect static comparison of both cars - and sometimes your comments are really funny and made me laugh 😆😆 - great video - thanks!
The best video I've seen of Kona vs. Niro. Thank you, you did a great job. I hope to buy a Niro in August, after WA state tax break goes into effect. There are some cool things with the Kona and extra range would be helpful, but I like the styling of Niro better.
Thank you björn 👍
For me Kona is the better choice, but Niro is also good.
Technology Move in Hyundai fan but Kona looks soportier and more futuristic!!!
THE KONA WON MY ♥️ PURCHASED AND NOW I FEEL IT WAS THE BEST DECISION HANDS DOWN
Thanks so much for doing this. It must have been exhausting to film, but it was wonderfully thorough and super helpful.
Just ordered a Niro after seeing this comparison!
Thank you very much for taking the time to make this video. It was extremely useful to me. Now all I have to do is find a garage in Ireland that can get a Niro. I would like the little screen on the Niro though. Also the last bit about the Niro having 10 cm longer wheelbases is critical for me.
Great review of all the details of both vehicles. I am looking at both of these. Thank you.
Great video. Very detailed analysis. I can see that you were exhausted at the end. Nice job. Thanks
Congrats on a very comprehensive comparison, The only thing you left out is the ground clearance of each car -very important for me as I need to clear a garage ramp daily.
Mario Stellini 17 cm.
@@frankbjrnsten7189 both 17cm clearance ?
I think Bjorn clarified on his live Q&A session tomorrow. He measured it out at 16 cms. The Kona is also 16 cms.
Thanks for actually measuring the trunk!
Loved your comparison video. I think it would help to have screen text identifying the cars while your talking. I also noticed the preponderance of charging stations in the garage you were in. In Minnesota where I live we are lucky to find charging stations anywhere. I hope that changes soon. Well done.
Excellent video, thanks so much Bjorn for taking the effort!
Very funny Guy 👍 Niro uglier but more room more important.
Thanks for the good job - recording and measure taping at once.
The Niro interior looks really good and we're I live both cars cost exactly the same.
Thanks for a great video.
30 minnutes that felt like 5. Great video! Just got even more sold on the Kia Niro EV. Hope they can deliver to demands....
Bjørn, if possible can you show the difference between Niro and Kona underside battery-to-ground clearances? Thanks.
Thank you SO much for doing this! This really clarified a lot of differences for me. What an awesome video.
Think the Kona looks better but i want the Niro.
Why?
@@ryccoh more space and trailerbar.
KalleKofot the kona is ugly af in any color that isn’t gray. Those wheel fenders are ginormous and stand out like a sore thumb
Exterior, hands down Kona is nicer. I think Niro is better for long term purchase for interior and space.
I love the way the Kona electric looks but the Niro EV is growing on me too. Other than exterior looks, the Niro seems to be a better choice for me hands down. More room and more features that matter for me.
Super useful! Thank you so much! A peak under the hood and underbody would have been interesting as well.
Dang, that was a great review showing everything side by side. Much better than in real because you never get the side by side chance. In the end, it seems 6 of one, half dozen of another and comes to personal preference.
Have you measured the ground clearence of Niro? Can you compare it? Thanks!
The Kona screen you compared to is the 7" (which is 8" on the higher spec version Kona.) That kona had really thick aftermarket mats in the back so your feet will be a bit crushed up against the bottom on the seat in front. HUD is brilliant.
the back on the kona looks great
Kona for the win, it's way cuter, and multiple CUV of the year awards, so there you go!
Great video Bjorn! Like the Niro! Kia should hire you for a top sales position! Very convincing and thorough! Keep up the videos!

To be honest, I'm not serious about buying an EV (because money), but I like watching you while eating - and I eat quite slow :)
Damn, outstanding review man!
Good comparison.
The Kona might be more cramped inside, but that also makes it feel more cozy, combined with the warmer light temperature.
Also the Kona has better position of the infotainment system, and also has head up display.
As usual great job Bjorn ! 👍
Brilliant video well done
The Kona has the same headlight layout as my 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. I quite like it because it’s different.
When it finally turns up in Australia I’ll probably get the Niro.
Hyundai kona is best looking too beautiful..i like it
What about the FRUNK? Do either have one? They are both wonderful, but if ya got kids & want more space, then Niro wins. Great video as always Bjorn, thank you sir!
Great comparison video for these two great cars
Niro looks batter, and interior is also batter in niro compare to kona, you are doing great videos bjorn so there is no reason to not watch full video. Good job..
Thanks for this. Very helpful. Ice driven the Niro but I prefer the look of Kona, particularly the new model. So I was wondering if the smaller space was worth it without sacrificing features.
Fantastic report as always.
I had expected the trunk of the Niro to be bigger by at least 10cm :-(
Thanks Bjøn for the comprehensive comparison
i own a Hev Niro, and a colleague of mine a Kona, we just confronted them and Niro is a bit longer, but it offers more legroom for the backseat passengers.
Thank you very much , very complete and interesting. I just place a pré-command for a Kona Ultimate 2019 electric.
I have a feeling some of these parts would be interchangeable... 😎
Excellent review. The niro might have more space but probably has a nice more expensive price tag to go with it
Very good comparison.
Wow you are the first person I know who likes the look of the Model X.
@@niffrig Well, as explained. I'm not overkeen on the look of SUVs. Model X looks like a podgy hatchback/saloon/sedan. And I prefer that look.
Forget the look, Teslas are poorly made . You will have numerous problems with those Teslas.
Amazing rewiew. I subscribed immediately. Thank you so much for your hard work
Personally I prefer the exterior design and general shape of the Niro, it is more spacious inside especially for the rear seats and a little bit more luxurious and "comfy". So, Niro seem better for people travelling more and families, whereas Kona seem better for singles or couples without children who have less needs at the rear. I do prefer the interior (from the driver's perspective) of the Kona. I do like the HUD of the Kona and I would love to have that. What's the price difference ?
Thank you. You make some good arguments for both cars. I just wished that these cars came with memory seats.
Hi Bjorn! Why nobody shows us what's inside the forward ''engine'' compartment where the combustion engine used to be? Thanks a lot!
You didn't focus on this, but it appears that the battery underneath the Kia Niro also protrudes below the chassis. Did you measure ground clearance?
Thanks for the comparison. I am thinking about buying either Kona or Niro depend on the price of cause. So far I think I prefer the look of Kona but but will probably buy Niro due to practicality. I am in Australia and I am sure Hyundai has committed to offer Kona Electric in early 2019 but there is no commitment from Kia in term of offering Niro EV in the near future. I saw somewhere mentioned Kia is offering lifetime warranty on their Niro EV battery which is a big plus!
VERY Good Bjorn.
Thank you Very much.
You are G8!
I think they both have some positive features. The Kona looks more high end on the exterior while the Niro seems to have a slightly better interior, especially with the backseat outlet. I have the Fiat 500e and Audi Etron and I think we will end up with one or both of these when the leases are up.
I think the niro is the far better car! Looking forward to seeing the price list and availability here in the UK. Thanks for the great video! 👍
Steve Mann why far better and its the same lol
People defenitely gives u like for your self- hardwork
Looked at both cars but decided on the niro as it feels way bigger, for family of four. Wasn't disappointed the e niro, to me feels more premium.
Jaguar hav an artificial silencer sound 😍.
Perfect review 💯.
Kia Niro EV launch India 🇮🇳
I lov Niro 💙
Niro should add round strip charging light.
