  • This video will cover how much insulation your home needs. We first cover what R-Value is because without understanding that you won’t understand how much insulation you need.
    R-value is the capacity of an insulating material to resist heat flow. Depending on where you live will determine how much r-value you need to be at. Hotter climates require less r-value then colder because the need to retain heat inside the home is less. After you have found where you live on the map you now know the number r-value to reach for.
    Each insulation when bought has the r-value listed in the packaging along with the thickness. You can stack insulation on top of each other adding their r-values together to achieve the overall r-value you’re looking for.
    General Rule Of Thumb: If your insulation is not covering your ceiling joists you most likely don’t have enough insulation. Typically 11-12 inches of cellulose blown in insulation at an r-value of 3.5 per inch is enough in southern states.
