18 മഹാപുരാണങ്ങളിൽ ഏറ്റവും ശ്രദ്ധേയമായ,മാർക്കണ്ഡേയ പുരാണം ആണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഉദ്ഭവത്തിന് ആധാരം.
ഭക്തനായ മാർക്കണ്ഡേയനെ രക്ഷിക്കൻ,മഹാ ശിവൻ കാലനെ വധിച്ച ഇടം, ആയത് കൊണ്ട് തന്നേയ് മഹാമൃത്യുഞ്ജയഹോമത്തിന്, കൂടുതൽ പ്രാധാന്യം കല്പിച്ചുവരുന്നു.
അത്യുഗ്രമൂർത്തിഭാവത്തിൽ ,കാലസംഹാരമൂർത്തി മഹാശിവൻ ആണ് ഇവിടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ.
ഭക്തരെ മരണഭയത്തിൽ നിന്നും രോഗാവശതകളിൽ നിന്നും രക്ഷിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് കാലകാലനായി, മൃത്യുഞ്ജയനായി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ വാഴുന്നു
ഇന്ത്യയിലെ തന്നേയ് പ്രസിദ്ധ മായ ശിവ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായ തൃപ്പങ്ങോടെ ക്ഷേത്രം , പരശുരാമൻ സ്ഥാപിച്ചു എന്നു വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന 108 ശിവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ്.
The origin of this temple is based on the Markandeya Purana, the most notable of the 18 Maha puranas.Mahamrityunjayahomath is given more significance because it is the place where Lord Shiva killed Kalan to save the Markandeya.Kalasamharamurti Mahashiva is deified here.Eternally reigning in the temple as Mrityunjaya, saving the devotees from the fear of death and disease.Tripangote Temple, one of the most famous Shiva temples in India, is one of the 108 Shiva temples believed to have been founded by Parasurama.
