@Neezy I disagree with him on the video being bad because has good points near the end but I feel like a lot of his points in the beginning apply to rappers that he likes too so it kind of takes value away from his opinion because it's not a true reason unless he's being hypocritical. Most rappers in general aren't experimental and try to reinvent themselves and just keep doing what works for them and that tends to give them a signature style. He could have just said, "I don't like his style" and it would be more convincing if that makes sense.

He has a line on Outcast: "same style but the songs are better."
I think he's continuing to delve into his signature style, and he's getting better at it. Some songs definitely sound similar to me, but I generally like the sound so it's not a problem (it really struck me that Lost and Paid My Dues sound veeeery similar though, from the beat to the structure of the song). His hooks have gotten a loooot better recently though imo. Also the dude single handedly got me into the genre of hip-hop so always mad respect to him for that, even if I'm not digging the current music. Overall I liked the mixtape better than the Search album. But hey, that's just my opinion!

Im a fan of NF's music, have been since Therapy but trust me man literally every point on here (except songwriting to an extent) is true. The lack of variety in his music makes me burn out on his music extremely fast, with Clouds just releasing the only tracks i listen to are Drifting and Story. I only really listen to tracks from Therapy Session and The Search (his 2 best albums by a mile).
I feel like when NF has a certain topic to focus on he really excels, whereas if hes just writing about being sad in general its very hit or miss. For example, Nate is one of my fav NF tracks and u can tell he had a concept in mind and executed it very well imo (same for story and many others). Whereas Thinking in the same album its just very boring to listen to cos he kinda just says alot but says nothing at the same time.

    NF is just diet Eminem.
everything NF does is the same shit Eminem does, but watered down.
like not even just sound-wise, (though he really does rip off Eminem's flows and voice... but not his lyrics, because Eminem is actually good at writing lyrics, even if they're stupid, they're still multi-syllabic and complex, and his beats don't all sound the same... even if some of them aren't very good...) he's just copying Eminem in every way possible.
he named himself the same way Eminem did (it's just his initials, but to not be like Eminem, he didn't spell it like Eneff, or something like that)
his whole aesthetic is just "rugged white boy from the ghetto"
he wears oversized shirts, Eminem wears oversized shirts, he puts his hood over his hat, Eminem puts his hood over his hat, the only real difference is NF wears boots and ripped jeans, and Eminem wore a white t-shirt with sweatpants, and now wears a black hoodie and thin chain.
hell, even their logos look the same! (chopped up letters that are fused into each other, backwards letters, bold and straight font, they're the same!)
if he didn't wanna be compared to Eminem, maybe he shouldn't copy Eminem as much as he does.

I think the biggest part of NF’s discography you didn’t talk about, and it’s probably because he doesn’t bring it up as much anymore, is Faith. It’s a big part of his older work and some of his newer work.
As for the major comments here is my response. NF isn’t an Artist you put on a playlist alone. He isn’t an Eminem, where you can have a playlist of his songs and feel something different for most of them.
Also maybe it’s just me, but I think the NF song with T9 on his most recent album will do a lot for his style. I’d imagine Tech has the cache to kinda sit him down and say “hey, a lot of these songs sound the same. You’ve got talent for sure, just use it”

  • @seansachs6105
    @seansachs6105 3 года назад +14

    Dear CDTV,
I'm an NF fan, but I have the same issues with lack of variety in his sound as you do. I felt that it was addressed a bit in his past two releases, but I'd like to see more. I'm willing to forgive a bit of the issue with the Search though because I felt he made a significant lyrical improvement. I also think The Search is 3-4 tracks too long. I understand your criticisms of his songwriting as well. He does make a lot of references to his past pain, but several of those are more surface-level. I feel he does do a great job telling stories though. Story, Intro 3, Nate, Changes, and How Could You Leave Us all do a great job.
As for the corniness factor, while the bars you mentioned are certainly overused, I don't feel that they're all that corny. If NF was forcing the issue and trying to make jokes land or laughing at his own words (a la Eminem), I would take more of an issue with the bars, but as it is, I just feel that they're meh. I also think that you can see some significant improvement in his lyric-writing from Perception to Changes and Clouds. Returns has sequences where he says stuff like "tool kit without the pliers" etc., which I thought was decent, and "Like a mannequin that can speak, what I have in store is unique" wasn't a bad line either. I actually think the larger improvement has been in his flow, which has always been the strongest part of his rapping to me.
Yes, the Eminem comparisons are a bit of a problem, although I think they're a bit overstated. His delivery is a lot like Eminem's, that is absolutely true. I don't see many similarities though between the production styles of the two artists. Eminem, especially earlier on in his career, used bouncy, G-funk influenced synths, while NF uses heavy, dark orchestration, which puts him closer to Hopsin for me.
Although I'm certainly not the biggest fan of NF, I do enjoy his music despite all the issues you pointed out. I was nearly ready to stop being a fan after Perception came out (one more album would've done it) but the improvements I saw on Changes convinced me to stay. I hope I continue to see more evolution and improvement from NF and thanks a lot CDTV for this video. It was really interesting and a lot of fun to hear your thoughts.

NF not having much variety in his lyrics and instrumentals is exactly why I like him. I've been in a depressed rut for most of my life and I find the lack of change in the albums to be similar to the lack of change in my life. It's relatable. That's why I love NF.

For clarification I'm an NF fan and I have been for some time. I'm not pissed or angry I promise lmao. I thought you made some genuinely good points. However I also have some criticism for how you constructed this video and some of the opinions in it.
The first thing you said was that sonically much if his music has reoccurring themes and instruments which is absolutely true. You also said that subjectively that kind of repetition just isnt for you which is completely fine.
Your second criticism of the lyrics however I find to be incredibly flawed. You made the statement that the songs on the Album The search could be summed up in one sentence which I completely disagree with. I feel like one song on the Album could be summed up with that sentence and thats "I miss the day's" the others have a variety of topics and go into them in depth. For ex. When I grow up is written from the perspective of a younger NF just breaking into rap and telling himself what he will be. Explaining what he's had to do and how hard he's had to work. The Search the song is about the beginning of a journey into self discovery and helping himself. Change is about acknowledging the things about himself he needs to change and vowing to change them while on his search. Leave me alone is about the struggles he feels with OCD and fame and how it's affected him every day of his career. There are many more examples. Then you criticized his punchlines and showed examples. My problem here is that you didn't explain why you didn't like these punch lines you just called them Dad jokes which I personally disagree with, power to you if you think they're dad jokes. But then you didn't show examples of what you consider GOOD punchlines so it leaves the question of why you think these punchlines are bad up in the air.
And then the classic Eminem and NF are similar. Eminem and Nf are both white michigan born angry rappers. But NF's race has absolutely nothing to do with his music while it has alot to do with Em's music. Em was cultivating a career amidst racial bias and a divide so large it caused bullying of the rapper when he was a kid. To my knowledge NF has.never once referenced the color of his skin in his rap because it has no part to play. It didn't affect his music. They were both born in michigan which is a similarity that doesn't really matter. And the final one. They're both angry. This one has always confused me because yes they are both angry but the REASON they're angry are different. Metallica's music can be considered angry yet no one compares them to em. The anger is merely am emotion felt. The reasons for that anger is buried within the music and can be seen in differences such as being plagued by OCD and a mother that has died due to an overdose. While Em's mother controlled his life and treated him like he was sick all the time. Two very different cases of anger. So I heavily disagree with your video but that's just my opinion. Have a great day.

@derp derpin I like CDTV and understand his point of view, but I agree with you. He has his style that nobody else in the genre really does (or does this well, at least). He could have some more variety, sure, but I can't fault him for sticking to what he's good at. and His lyrics about mental health resonate so well with people because even though CD doesn't *think* they're in depth, they literally describe the mental illnesses he's referencing perfectly. I've never heard someone who deals with severe depression, anxiety, or OCD say his lyrics are too surface level. He's tackled just about every symptom/challenge of anxiety & depression in his music, and still finds new ways to talk about it that don't just repeat exactly what he's said before. People who don't deal with them may see this as surface level/stale, but to someone who actually suffers from severe mental illness, he tackles every aspect pretty perfectly, which I've never heard done before personally.

He has this therapy session stuff and “the search” but in the end he doesn’t seem to find anything. Take Dave’s psychodrama for example. You can see how he grows with more and more introspection throughout the record. But NF just seems to repeat the same stuff over and over to fit the image he’s created and the crowd that relates so much to his music
