  • "The Dominguez" is a powerful and revealing documentary that tells the story of one family that helped shape the history of Los Angeles and California. In 1784, the Dominguez family was given the first land grant in all of California, called Rancho San Pedro, which covered 75,000 acres southwest of Los Angeles.
Pioneers in a region once controlled by Spain, the Dominguez dealt with California changing hands to the Mexican government and then to the United States, facing all kinds of challenges in the process. Floods, earthquakes and even a battle fought on their property during the Mexican-American War, were some of the obstacles they overcame.
The Dominguez were instrumental in writing the first Constitution for the state of California, and they put Los Angeles on the world map and made aviation history in the twentieth century. The documentary is dynamic and full of rich history, and combines never-before-seen interviews with historians, community leaders and family descendants.
The Dominguez legacy remains strong today and proves that if an individual can affect the course of history, we all can do something to make this world a better place.

The LA area has grown tremendously over the years, but it was through many right decisions taken back when the region was smaller and less populated, that the whole area became more important and influential in California, the US, and globally. Cool video but I do believe there is an issue with the claim of Rancho San Pedro being the first spanish land grant in California. From what I can find Rancho San Pedro was granted in 1784 from Spain. Yet if you look further you will find that the first California land grant from Spain was to Manuel Butron in 1775. Ironically he was married to a native who took the name Magarita Maria Dominguez. He didn't hold the land long and I do remember reading that if the land is abandoned it reverts back to Spain. That aside I do like the histrory here.

Thank you for your message and for watching! I appreciate you sharing that information, as I didn't know about Manuel Butrón. Do you know if the land given to him had a name, just like the Ranchos? On a quick search, there is a mention on Wikipedia regarding Rancho La Natividad, which his son, also named Manuel Butrón, and his son-in-law Nicolás Alviso, received as Mexican land grant in 1837. Also there, on the first paragraph under History, there is a mention with what you shared about him receiving the first California land grant in 1775, but it doesn't give any more detail.
I used the book "California Legacy" by Historian Dr. Judson Grenier. On this topic, on page 18 he mentions: "the early land grants took the form of 'permissions' to graze cattle" (perhaps they were not permanent land grants and it must be here where Butrón should have been mentioned). Dr. Grenier then explains that in 1776 a new order of the King of Spain gave local governors the right to recommend much larger grants... and goes on to describe the first three recipients of land grants: Juan José Domínguez (Rancho San Pedro), José Verdugo (Rancho San Rafael), and Manuel Nieto (Rancho Los Nietos).
Thanks again for your valuable comment and for sharing your knowledge of early California history. Have a great weekend!
